King Charles hosts French President for State Visit

After Brexit, the Royal Family (Queen Elizabeth and then King Charles) have deployed soft power to support Anglo-French rapprochement.

Hopefully politicians will pursue improved co-operation between the two nations as it is critical for security (Ukraine war) and prosperity (reducing trade barriers for small to medium businesses hit hard by increased red tape post-Brexit).

The couple were earlier greeted by Prince William and Catherine as they landed in the UK for a three-day trip.

I agree about Catherine’s dress, that red looks very “dead” somehow. Perhaps the fabric is more sumptuous irl than it appears in photos.

I also think there’s something about not overshadowing Camilla at these events. When Catherine is the star of the show she very much looks it.

I thought the tricolour effect was a nice touch.

I thought Catherine's dress looked better in the photo of her walking along.

I do agree that some of Catherine's fashion choices are more conservative so as not to overshadow Camilla on joint engagements.

As part of tonight's menu there was apparently a new cocktail:

'A cocktail has also been created for the occasion, called L’entente, combining British gin with lemon curd and French pastis, garnished with dried French cornflowers and English roses.'

Flower sprinkles, anyone?

LOL!

Maybe Meghan had sent them a batch lot and they needed to find a way to get rid of them!

bluegreygreen · 08/07/2025 22:35

Unless they mean stuck to the glass, would you not just get random bits in your mouth?

The DM will be calling that a “sweet nod”…

Found a pic - looks like you can avoid getting the sprinkles in your mouth.

Are they trolling her 🤣

Kate looks dreadful, poor woman. The really harsh dark eye make up is doing her no favours.

Well if that’s the case I wish I looked as dreadful.

He gave a wonderful tribute to our late Queen. The best of all of them in my opinion.
So many English can't stand the French, anything French and would never consider going there. They even hark back to the war, although not old enough to remember it. Their loss.

hein?

Bowdownbitches · 08/07/2025 23:13

What are you all smoking? Catherine looks amazing. Would love to see what you all look like if you think she looks dreadful 🤣

Theres definitely a confirmation bias on this thread.

I like the evening look. It's very straightforward, very predictable Kate, but it gets the job done and she looks good.

I get the impression that Anne is very disciplined. I bet she'd see over indulging as a weakness.

I don't see Anne hoovering up a plate of hobnobs before bed....that's my undoing!

Not2identifying · 08/07/2025 23:25

Forgot to say, I was looking forward to seeing the little picture of Charles but now that I've seen it I think it will always clutter her look. Goodness only knows how she will manage 3 one day when William is on the throne, on her small frame! If she outlives William she might even wear 4!

I think she looks lovely - it's not one of her top ten looks for me, however I've not really liked most of her state dinner / super formal attire. These occasions require proper gowns not just evening dresses and they can't be flashy in the celebrity sense.

All the more modern stuff she wears - the gold dress, those really sparkly Jenny Packham dresses she wears to premieres, high profile weddings and overseas cocktail engagements.

So I think she's stuck in a weird limbo for her age - has to be something formal, not too showy, work with the sashes for the medals etc, not clash with the Queen, not clash with the senior foreign female, be dignified, be the right designer for the occasion etc - I really disliked an odd blue creased gown she wore for one state dinner and another odd white fluffy one.

I agree with a PP that she needs to lop a good ten inches off the hair, but I understand wanting to hang onto the style of your youth for as long as possible too.

I noticed that Camilla wasn't wearing the QEII one today just the King's, so many when Catherine is Queen she will just wear William's.

Has anyone seen the footage of one of the Macron’s cars (the one with their luggage) driving away from Windsor castle with the boot open and all the luggage falling out?

🫣

I saw that. It was very funny and just perfect on such an occasion.

What is a confirmation bias?

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 08/07/2025 23:49

William seems to have aged dramatically and lost weight in recent pictures! Maybe all the stress of having an unwell wife and and unwell father.

Agree.

It is the usual suspects tearing Catherine down and presenting a narrative divorced from reality.

The Princess of Wales wore a beautiful red gown that completed the "le tricolore" without overshadowing the either of the two older ladies who anchored the two other colours. She seemed to have a good rapport with the President of France who was smiling and conversing with Catherine throughout the dinner.

IMHO, it was job well done.

Dear oh dear! just saw the clip.

What a bad day in the office for the poor person responsible for securing the luggage!

@My2cents1975 my husband had to go to a lot of very formal events in the past and he said they loved it when things like this happened. 😆
