King Charles hosts French President for State Visit

After Brexit, the Royal Family (Queen Elizabeth and then King Charles) have deployed soft power to support Anglo-French rapprochement.

Hopefully politicians will pursue improved co-operation between the two nations as it is critical for security (Ukraine war) and prosperity (reducing trade barriers for small to medium businesses hit hard by increased red tape post-Brexit).

The couple were earlier greeted by Prince William and Catherine as they landed in the UK for a three-day trip.

Too decadent and middle class. Get those bloody Wales children to start a fire and cook a sausage for everyone - ensuring fair distribution, of course, we don't need SauageGate, The Diplomatic Incident Chapter.

Can you imagine? Good point about Marks, it's cheaper to make the sarnies at home and give them to the visiting Head of State. Save the sausages for when the German President visits.

If they’d hosted a state BBQ up in Scotland, they could’ve saved a fortune on staff — just get the Queen on the washing up, she loved that sort of thing at Balmoral. Stick Charles on pots and pans, and hand Macron the tea towel. Job done!

Oh, yes, I've seen photos of Phillip and Anne doing the BBQ, and HMQ getting out the tupperware boxes. I'd also heard that she liked to do the washing up, so maybe that would have been a good bonding exercise with Helmut Kohl.
I can imagine him perched on a camping stool waiting for his sausage.

Just don't mention the war!

No doubt thet would have been able to converse well with him, though. German was Philip's first language. (Although his mother often conversed with him in English, and latterly Greek.)

"In the past five years, officials have held more than 300 events, including one on “period dignity” held in Beijing, a ceilidh on a Brussels roundabout, a joint cheese and whisky party with the Swiss, and a football celebration with the Bavarians.

Among those to have attended the parties are John Swinney, First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf, both former first ministers, and Angus Robertson, former culture secretary."

I have recently started listening to a podcast by the royal correspondents Roya Nikkah and Kate Mansey, which you can find on the Times Radio app. They released an episode this week about the state visit and I found their perspective and inside information very interesting. I highly recommend it!

Sorry, I meant to comment that spending on diplomatic events is pervasive and giving an example of the SNP using cheese and whiskey diplomacy to promote Scotland.

To get to the hall where the State Banquet was held, guests had to walk through the Waterloo Chamber. Dedicated to the military defeat of Napoleon in 1815! 🤣

I took my son to the Trafalgar 200 celebrations ( well mainly to the Son et Lumiere which was fantastic ).
I do recall though seeing an interview on the TV with the captain of the Charles de Gaulle who had brought the ship to the celebrations. He was asked whether he was happy to bring their most prestigious ship to an event which celebrated Nelson's victory. He was lovely and the thing he said I remember was "When you are invited to your cousin's wedding , you put on your best clothes". I don't know why but I found that charming.

Does anyone know if this is true? https://www.facebook.com/61560665080108/posts/shes-the-daughter-i-never-knew-i-needed-king-charles-tearful-tribute-to-princess/122174092646355502/

It sounds lovely on the face of things, but also seems deeply odd that none of the mainstream media are reporting it, and now some are insisting it's a fake story

No idea puzzled, it sounds like something Charles might say , it’s obvious he’s fond of Catherine but I doubt he’d say that at a state banquet and yes , as you say surely the media would have reported it! 🤷‍♀️

myrtleWilson · 12/07/2025 18:12

Catherine wasn’t wearing a sapphire gown and William must have Inspector Gadget arms to hold her hand across the banquet table but other than that am sure it’s legit 😂

myrtleWilson · 12/07/2025 18:14

Oh and they were all in Windsor!

jeffgoldblum · 12/07/2025 18:17

It's absolute bollocks.
Take a quick look at the FB page

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/07/2025 18:39

Didn't see the bit about them supposedly being at the Elysee Palace, @myrtleWilson Blush

Oh well, it certainly explains why it's not on any other media; I did think it seemed odd, but wanted other opinions so thanks everyone

Edited to add I just did as you said and looked at some of their other posts, @CorrectionCentre ... oh dear, oh dear Grin Grin
