The royal family

Opinions may Vary . A genuine question about why Meghan and Harry seem to attract such differing views.

I post this more in hope than experience but I would be really interested in a proper discussion about those who are fans or supporters of them , those who aren't and indeed ( of which there are many ) , those who are indifferent.

So - I'll start. There was an interesting post on another thread which said M&H come over as David and Goliath , standing up against "the Institution" - my paraphrase.

No spitting , no fighting , mind the furniture 😂

Do you also think Japanese adult children meeting their parents shouldn't bow?

Of course not!
apparently only our traditions are silly , outdated and worthy of ridicule!

We are not in Japan. If I was Japanese, I might have an opinion about it, who knows, I don't know the culture well enough to express an opinion as a british person.

You could say the same for Meghan.

The usual joyless, anti-British, envy-laced republicanism then. And a bit of racism thrown in, as we are "better than" those deferential foreigners.

True. Good point.

But she did it when she had to. My point though is... close family should not have to curtsey every time they clap eyes on each other. Family is stronger than that. But I suppose it's a show at functions for those that love it.

She said she thought having to curtsey was a joke!
I would have done too. If I was told I was expected to curtsey to my boyfriend's nan when I first met her, in private, I'd have been totally thrown by the idea. I wouldn't have considered that in that moment I was meeting "the Queen" in her role as Queen and would have assumed that family was separated from the role.

Naive.

Naive.

Unashamedly so yes as I suspect Meghan was. I don't think naivety about such things is an inherently bad thing

Extiainoiapeial · 04/07/2025 11:30

I've always noticed it. Nothing to do with Meghan?!

Since Kate has been on the scene, I've thought, stop the flippin' curtseying, it looks daft, it's your FIL.
Ditto Zara! (not FIL, but Uncle of course)

I think Zara is a perfect example of blending the two. She acknowledges Charles as the King and then will often fling her arms around him. I never saw her do that to my recollection with the late Queen who obviously had different expectations in public. Things will evolve as generations move on.

Hoolahoophop · 04/07/2025 11:50

I blame Harry for the curtsy thing. Regardless of our opinions on family do or do not curtsy its something that should not have thrown her. Its something that they do in their family regardless of any outside opinions on the matter. My DH have customs and behaviors I find a bit odd. But DH warned me about them and I gamely follow along. Some homes are shoes on, some shoes off, a bit of advanced warning helps, so you can feel comfortable and confident in what you are doing. Harry failed Meghan in many ways. But she should not be taking the piss out of the family publicly.

Meghan naive? With her freakish attention to detail? Nope I don't think so.

Quite. A bob to the head of state (recognising the office) and a kiss for her uncle. Catherine does the same, a bob and a kiss and a hug.

Why the silly GIF? Can I not express a reasonable opinion on here?

How strange
I always find GIFs are used when there is nothing anyone can say!

I thought she had a degree in international relations from one of the top unis in the USA. And she knows how to use google, I assume. She claimed she'd travelled to several countries (pre-Harry) where customs would have been very different to what she's used to. She claims she has a freakish attention to detail. Any corporate that sends their personal overseas gets them to understand the customary greetings and other ways to avoid causing offense. Heck, we look at that stuff before we go on holiday. Meghan the unaware ingenue is nothing more than her cos-playing the Princess Diaries. It goes hand in hand with her supporters calling them a "young couple" and the like. Manufactured vulnerability belying the actual truth, and feeding into the spurious David and Goliath narrative.

I always think they are a great visual response to something particularly stupid.

Vespanest · 04/07/2025 12:04

Not compulsory is for the general public and meeting dignitaries. I've had to cutesy quite often as sometimes I worked in military uniform which would be stand to attention and salute and some occasions in civilian clothes and curtesy. It was never an option. The family see themselves as on duty, especially the older generation all the time there are people present, there is only a few trusted staff that they would be more relaxed whilst in their presence. I do think this will change with William. There are many customs and cultures than on meeting a partner's grandparents that require a cultural change. There's adoption in my family and there was a Irish grandmother mother, that required a list of rules and conversational avoidance. As for my culture, meeting the parents nevermind the grandparents is the equivalent of applying for a US green card at the moment.

Serenster · 04/07/2025 12:05

Just to note, in courts in the UK you don’t just stand up when the judge enters the room, you bow to them. And again if you have to leave the courtroom while the judge is sitting. Respect for the office. Even if the judge is someone you know very well.

How odd. My reply saying I would not judge something in the Japanese culture because I am not Japanese is 'particularly stupid'. I find that quite a reasonable point.

I don't do GIFs, I find them lacking in imagination and used when the poster has nothing to discuss or answer.

I know!!!
yes she was Harry’s grandmother but to everyone else not in the family she is ( or was ) the Queen!
how would an American feel if their father was the president and they introduced a new girlfriend or boyfriend and he didn’t show respect?

Meghan was then only the latest girlfriend of one of the Queen's many grandchildren.

I doubt HM would have given a toss if she had curtsied or not, and at most she could have given a discreet bow of the head. It's not like she'd be thrown in the Tower or anything. Lots of people do not bow or curtsy when meeting the Queen. She's well used to it.

And it's not so much about how she felt at the time, as was the fact that she did that obviously mocking deep bow on Netflix. Even the prat Harry seemed appalled, though not even to stop her. For someone who uses her meaningless Duchess title to flog flower sprinkles on the internet, she seems rather selective in which royal traditions she chooses to mock.

Yes I remember.

Extiainoiapeial · 04/07/2025 12:17

'Particularly stupid' is hardly abstract but never mind!

Back to the subject in hand... interestingly, a half bow of the head is known as a 'half curtsy', a full bow of the head is also known as a curtsey. QE2 did a 'half curtsy' as Diana's coffin passed her.
