As per the DM, we are told Meg is using Fairwinds Estate winery for her rose. Sounds nice.
But a Reddit user has discovered, that Fairwinds winery is just a brand under the umbrella of Wine gift shop. They do corporate gifts and print on demand. Oh Meg, as ever

The thing is, I could respect Meghan for her achievements, had she and Harry not made such a hash of it since leaving. Being a jobbing actor is hard, hard slog, especially I would imagine in La La Land. I remember during Covid Richard Harrington, an actor I really like (and who has been in loads of things) took a job as a Deliveroo driver because of lack of work and needing the money. He made some amusing comment about the perception all actors are rich but it not being true. Meghan's "briefcase girl" stint also. So what, it was work, she wasn't dealing drugs. The fact she had managed to accrue some savings during Suits also indicates she wasn't stupid.

I'm never going to be sure how someone who must have a bit of understanding of "real life" (unlike clueless Harry) threw away the golden chance to have it all, a life of luxury and the chance to make a difference. It is very strange to me. Hubris? Don't know.

I agree.

There's a quote about a British embassy dinner in the 1800s which was, although racist, really encapsulated the British primary emphasis on class.

Something about a guest complaining about being seated below a black man, and being firmly told that the African prince outranked him and was not a commoner! (I can't search it because I don't want the only words I remember from the quote in my history)

My grandmother was working class, a full on socialist campaigner in her youth. She had severe dementia by the end, and they could only reliably get Asian staff to look after her (after she had a brief stay in a Jewish care home). She was always asking them concerned questions about how they were being treated in this country and told us that we must never, never treat immigrants badly because they were given a hard enough time as it was.

Race and class are very, very different issues in the US to the UK.

This reminds me of Rising Damp, where Philip (played superbly by the young Don Warrington) was an African prince at university in the UK. He was uber-posh and this mightily confused the racist-and-snobbish Rigsby. Poor Rigsby’s brain couldn’t compute!

Oh he was quite wonderful! The drawled "Riiiiiiiigggggsby"!

In the film it came out that he was actually from Croydon and it had all been an elaborate pisstake.

😂 Well I must say, he convinced me! It’s not just the upper class drawl - it’s that superior expression he does so well!

RandyRedHumpback · 02/07/2025 17:46

@Uricon2 Instead of being proud of and owning her suitcase girl days, she complained about it on her Archetypes podcast. That's where she always slips up. In trying to be the authentic feminist or whatever her "role of the day" is, she claps back and revises her own history to make herself look perfect to the point of looking inauthentic, stupid and pissing people off. She pissed off the other women who were her contemporaries on Deal Or No Deal, and who said it was a terrific launch pad for their careers, that they didn't feel small or objectified doing it, and that they were grateful for a chance that thousands of women would have killed for. Heck, she even pissed off Whoopi Goldberg, who told her off for her remarks. She has no self reflection or sense of humour about herself at all, and that's why I think she keeps failing. She thinks everything she does or has ever done must be profound, life-changing, Nobel Prize winning in stature. It just comes across as false and desperate as well as risibly self-aggrandising - that bloody dish washing liquid commercial being the epitome of this habit.

Some of Meghan's behaviour that jars in the UK is also very American class-based. From what I can tell, there's a lot more respect for people who've "made it", whatever "it" is in the eyes of the beholder, whereas in the UK people are more inclined to be proud of where they came from than what they've become.

But my knowledge of that is slippery.

The difference is that an American will ask you what you do for a living, whereas a British person will ask you what your parents did.

Really? In casual conversations, British people will ask what you do. They won't ask what your parents do. I have never had that experience. Not once.

Uricon2 · 02/07/2025 18:02

whatever her "role of the day" is

This is so true @RandyRedHumpback . It's life as a series of poses.

Nor me. Amongst longer standing friends it might come up in conversation but not out of the gate.

Me neither. Although I do remember at university, people would often ask what school you went to.

Would someone please explain what clap back actually means?

A retort? Tit for tat?

Also lean into?

Many thanks

There was a clip that Scott Rouse showed where she said she thought people would be able to sense she was involved in the product. I can't remember the exact words but it was batshit. As Ever, with added essence of Meghan.

I think clap back is indeed a retort/defence.

Lean into I'm also not entirely sure about.

Another old person.

Race and class are very, very different issues in the US to the UK.

I think this is a really valid point.

Race is the 'original sin' of American life, and still remains the primary faultline in the country. While racism certainly exists in the UK, as it does everywhere, class has traditionally been far more relevant, and arguably still is. I think a lot of Americans superimpose their own obsession with race upon British society, and view the royals through that rather distorting lens. It can be very hard to convince them that what is true in the US isn't necessarily true in Britain.

I think that the UK hasn't really had to confront racism properly because of the class system, as the class system makes it easy to discriminate against ethnic minorities who are more likely to be working class.

So those in power and in establishment institutions can at a fairly broad stroke, stick with 'their own kind' and prevent social mobility for non white British people and immigrants as just how the system is organised without confronting the additional unconscious bias that also exists.

I'm quite interested in @CurlewKate. 's post about people who are fans of M or not ( and indeed H ) Do we think that would make an interesting thread or just end up a bunfight? I'm interested in the phenomenon which is M&H but not interested in mudslinging. Am happy to start one if people think of interest

I'm interested in the topic but there's no doubt it will end up as a bunfight.

Although I'm not sure we have many actual true M&H fans on these boards anymore - most of the defending seems to come from republicans who hope the drama is going to be a chink in the popularity of the monarchy. They are usually very anti the Wales for the same reason.

Everything points to the continued high popularity of William and Kate and their photogenic children, so unless George turns out to be a badun' the monarchy is pretty much secure for the next two generations.

Some pretty awful stuff by the SS on X concerning Catherine talking about her cancer journey.

Lean into means embrace it, whatever it is. Let's say you're trying to fight the ageing process and you get botox etc but you eventually come to the conclusion that you're fighting a losing battle, so you stop all treatments and 'lean into' your old agedom!

Thank you. I'm definitely "leaning into" my old age because it would take full "Life and Loves of a She Devil" surgery now!

BasiliskStare · 02/07/2025 19:33

I have posted on the RF board a new thread - I just hope against hope it can have some decent discussion and not turn unpleasant. But I am quite old so what do I know 😂

God, they are so horrible. I truly believe that if Meghan became ill (and I fervently hope that she doesn't) noone, at least on this board, would do anything but wish her the very best.

I find the whole thing fascinating and I would love a thread about it. Happy to risk the bun fight!
