I did this last year and there was a reasonable amount of interest, so happy to do it again for each day of Royal Ascot.

Ffs Mrs Anthony Horowitz! Are we in 1912?!

CaveMum · 17/06/2025 12:49

These days they do get asked how they want to be referred to, so it will have been her choice.

When I’ve been in the Royal Enclosure (granted not in the carriage procession 😜) I have “Mrs FirstName LastName”, and not my husband’s name on my badge. That said it’s been several years since I’ve made it there!

Nice little nod to history. The 1st Duke of Wellington was part of the first ever Royal Procession 200 years ago, and today the 9th Duke is also taking part.

Thank you for this thread @CaveMum. I remember the one from last year. Can’t remember if I posted or not but I was always interested to read it and the snippets of information you provided 😄

Mymanyellow · 17/06/2025 14:09

I love Anthony Horowitz’s books. So pleased to see his name pop up.

Starseeking · 17/06/2025 15:58

Isn’t Harriet Peter’s girlfriend? I thought they’d been together a while, seems odd that she’s still married to someone else.

upinaballoon · 17/06/2025 16:21

Yes, hasn't the year slipped round quickly!

I think they said they’ve been an official couple for a year now.

She may not still be married, but just kept her married name. It happens!

NewAgeNewMe · 17/06/2025 16:53

Love the royal carriage thread thank you. I’ve been to royal ascot once sadly not in the royal enclosure or ever likely to be!

I appreciate lots of women keep their married surname, I didn’t realise they’d still be called Mrs after a divorce though.

Apologies for the derail!

Why is one the lady ?

spanieleyes · 17/06/2025 17:18

Why is one the lady ?

Because she’s the daughter of the Earl of Halifax and therefore a Lady!

As an aside, her father, the Earl of Halifax, was once considered a suitor for Princess Anne but instead married Camilla Younger who had previously been married to Richard Parker Bowles, the brother of Andrew Parker Bowles!

it’s a small world for aristocrats!

I’ve never known why they are styled as “The Lady” rather than just “Lady” but it may be to distinguish between those who are a Lady by dint of their husband’s title and those who were born into an aristocratic family.

A bit like why Catherine is “Catherine, Princess of Wales” rather than “Princess Catherine of Wales”.

Apparently Princess Margaret laid great store on being HRH The Princess Margaret showing she was a princess "of the blood".
I assumed (The) Lady thing was the same, CaveMum, as you suggest.

Ohpleeeease · 17/06/2025 19:06

Thank you for the thread @CaveMum, I enjoyed it last year!

Sorry to be a pedant, but she's The Princess of Wales. Not Catherine, Princess of Wales. Her name would only be used like that if she was divorced, hence Diana, Princess of Wales

DelectableMe · 17/06/2025 20:31

I didn't realise Anthony Horowitz was so close to the royals!

They've been seen together at official events for longer than that.

thats interesting. I do get itchy when people call her princess catherine.

That’s exactly why - both ‘The’ Ladies in the carriages are daughters of earls and styled Lady by birthright. The other lady is a courtesy title from her marriage.

Ooh, thanks for this. Looking forward to seeing what The Princess of Wales is wearing, I love her style.

How close do people get to the King and other royals if not in the Royal Enclosure these days?
About 45 years ago I went with my parents on a coach trip for the day classy, right? The names of various enclosures were different then. Iirc (and I probably don't), there were just 3: the Royal Enclosure, the Silver Ring (cheapest) and the one where we were whose name escapes me. Even for that my father wore a suit, I wore a dress and hat and my mother (who hated rules and her skinny legs - her description) wore a trouser suit which several people looked askance at.
After the carriage parade, we were scooted either side of the route the Queen etc al took on foot to the RE and were very close indeed to them; about 5 feet away. Close enough to see that the Queen, despite having lovely skin, wore quite heavy foundation. Very necessary to last all day and for photos, I should think.
Do people get that close now?
