I did this last year and there was a reasonable amount of interest, so happy to do it again for each day of Royal Ascot.

Today’s list

The POW’s are no longer in the carriages. Make of it what you will!

How close do people get to the King and other royals if not in the Royal Enclosure these days?
About 45 years ago I went with my parents on a coach trip for the day classy, right? The names of various enclosures were different then. Iirc (and I probably don't), there were just 3: the Royal Enclosure, the Silver Ring (cheapest) and the one where we were whose name escapes me. Even for that my father wore a suit, I wore a dress and hat and my mother (who hated rules and her skinny legs - her description) wore a trouser suit which several people looked askance at.
After the carriage parade, we were scooted either side of the route the Queen etc al took on foot to the RE and were very close indeed to them; about 5 feet away. Close enough to see that the Queen, despite having lovely skin, wore quite heavy foundation. Very necessary to last all day and for photos, I should think.
Do people get that close now?

These days they can go straight from the Parade Ring to the Royal Box, so they don’t go into the crowd at all. If you are in the Parade Ring (as connections to one of the runners) you can get pretty close though it’s a very large space.

Thanks, CaveMum
I was thinking that security must need to be a bit tighter these days, sadly.
Mind you, I've also got a picture of 5 year old me on the doorstep of 10, Downing Street holding hands with the policeman on duty!
Good grief, I'm feeling old now...

Looks like it’s just Kate who has dropped out - William is in first carriage now

Looks like it’s The Princess and Lord Soames who are no longer attending today, the POW has been given an upgrade to the first carriage Grin

CaveMum · 18/06/2025 13:02

Well spotted, I’d missed PoW in Carriage 1 - he has a race in his name today, so he “has” to be there to present trophy!

Oh dear, looks like Princess of Wales has pulled out altogether. Hope she’s ok.

Kate was sneezing a lot at the Trooping the Colour. Perhaps she has a cold.

She's allergic to horses which may have affected her at Trooping.

Bearing in mind that this time last year she wasn't doing much at all I thought three engagements in a week was pushing it.

TizerorFizz · 18/06/2025 14:03

Camilla in Emerald green. Quite unusual for her. Very short of Royals in carriages! Lots of people we don’t really know except Justin Rose.

If she’s allergic to horses, then Ascot races, in a horse drawn carriage in the boiling sun probably wouldn’t be much fun, especially if she is feeling a bit fragile. There are
lots of lurgies about atm as well. I’ve just got over one that made my right eye and right nostril stream for 24 hours. It was most bizarre and very uncomfortable 😬

Yes plus the pollen is awful this year.

Ffs Mrs Anthony Horowitz! Are we in 1912?!

It makes my toes curl.

Eugenie goes by 'Eugenie York' on her social media and elsewhere, but the royal website refers to her as 'Mrs Jack Brooksbank'. When Zara had her babies she was referred to as 'Mrs Michael Tindall'. It's really such an archaic, almost 1950s style. I don't know why they still insist on it. Especially when the woman is the royal, and the man isn't even an aristocrat, if that matters.

You haven't heard of William Boyd? He is a first class writer, very famous. There are several Richard Harris' that this one could be.

TizerorFizz · 18/06/2025 15:22

@BoudiccaRuled Well yes I have but he’s not star quality is he? Not a household name. There are 16 spaces in the carriages so that’s 2 we know! Most boring carriages ever.

TizerorFizz · 18/06/2025 15:35

Also if in the Queen Anne enclosure you can get to the parade ring to see the procession enter. Or watch them come up the track. They are very close if you stand on the parade ring terraces.

Are there always so many authors in the carriages?

Serenster · 18/06/2025 15:59

Drangea · 18/06/2025 15:41

No - it seems to be a bit of a literary year. Camilla is interested in reading and literacy, and given the carriage attendees have lunch at Windsor castle first, maybe she decided she fancied the company of some well-known authors this year.

I see some of Kate’s family are also attending Ascot today, so she clearly was intending to be there.

TizerorFizz · 18/06/2025 16:11

Camilla has a reading room at Ascot so is promoting her charity.

BemusedAmerican · 18/06/2025 16:35

I just heard on my local NYC radio station about Catherine not attending Ascot! They were sympathetic - mentioned her health issues last year. A break from the local election coverage.

CheerfulBunny · 18/06/2025 16:49

I'd love it if Jilly Cooper turned up in one of the carriages. Perhaps her books are a bit spicy for royal endorsement though 😄

cupfinalchaos · 18/06/2025 16:53

Going tomorrow to RE and dreading it in the heat!

I think she's supposed to be quite friendly with Camilla, so you never know...

Not2identifying · 18/06/2025 17:55

I hope Kate is alright. Anyone seen any photos of Sarah Chatto? I like her style usually (it's very down-to-earth but elegant).
