I did this last year and there was a reasonable amount of interest, so happy to do it again for each day of Royal Ascot.

Hmm.

Not sure what seems to be an increasing reliance on the once a year get dressed-up and pissed-up at the big events punters is the golden ticket but we'll see 🙂

@HonoriaBulstrode Not overly successful but she got lucky. The dam (mum) of Estimate, one of her better horses, had a foal and this was a gift from the Aga Khan on The Queen’s 80th birthday. Won £374,000. She bred her 2x Classic winner, Dunfermline. She also bred Highclere - another very succesful horse. Overall she really bred for her own pleasure with an eye on finance. She was never going to compete with Darley, Coolmore and the rest. They are worldwide breeding and racing operations. It wasn’t her main business! Who knows if she could have done better but she took a keen interest.

Charles has never shown interest in breeding as far as I’m aware. He could slim it down or discuss it with William. Camilla likes her racing though.

For most owners, it’s the dream of winning that keeps you going. Syndicated horses with lots of owners spread costs but you, as a small cog, have no say in much. It’s great to win but at minor tracks, winnings are slim.

The big meetings will stay but you need lesser meetings to allow horses to run. A few 2 year olds will have their first race at Ascot but (older) handicappers need to have run 3 times. So we need a portfolio of races at a variety of courses.

@CathyorClaire Sadly your posts are spoiling our chat. I think we know what you think but we see things differently. You won’t get your way because Ascot, Cheltenham and Aintree mean more to people than you do.

He flogged Mummy's nags for £12m.

Sadly your posts are spoiling our chat

It's not a chat thread 🙂

He didn’t flog them all. It’s standard practice for owners to sell on horses, that’s why we have “horses in training” sales several times a year. Sometimes they’re being sold on to raise money to pay for the retained horses, sometimes because they’ve not turned out to be the type the owner wants - some owners only have flat horses so will sell on those better suited to jumping; some owners want sprinters so will sell on stayers, etc.

The Queen sold plenty of horses herself, most owners do.

He didn’t flog them all.

Just the ones that weren't turning a profit then?

Much like the Duchy Originals sale to Waitrose.

I have cousins who used to enjoy a day at the races. The older couple are now too elderly and infirm to be able to go any more, but they had some good days out and thoroughly enjoyed it as a sociable hobby. My cousin used to study the form, not because he wanted to bet, but it added to the interest for him to know something about the horses.

TizerorFizz · 22/06/2025 21:54

It’s not just about profit with fillies and mares. You keep them if you want them to be brood mares. Most owners with considerable numbers of horses make choices. It’s a decision made at every stage of a horses life. They supply the rest of us who buy horses who will go jump racing or continue with another owner on the flat.

Thanks for the explanation @CaveMum and further discussion @TizerorFizz
I didn’t know any of this so it’s all very interesting.

I hadn’t been able to watch any earlier in the week so yesterday was an afternoon indulgence. I do love looking at the fashion as well as a bit of racing. And I did choose one winner from my armchair. Lazzat , a lovely looking horse. A bit anxiety inducing watching him running free around the course later, he certainly had plenty left in the tank after the race.

Can’t help a little laugh at the Sun’s version of events : Chaos as Lazzat goes mad!

Thankfully not mad but still very frisky.

Chaos at Royal Ascot as winning horse Lazzat almost KOs groundsworker with kick

CHAOS hit Royal Ascot when winning horse Lazzat almost drop-kicked a groundsworker in the head after getting loose and going mad. The Wathnan-owned sprinter just bagged more than half a million qui…

Thanks @CaveMum and @TizerorFizz - I always like learning things and I don't know a lot about the practicalities of racing (though do read Dick Francis!).

It makes my toes curl.

Eugenie goes by 'Eugenie York' on her social media and elsewhere, but the royal website refers to her as 'Mrs Jack Brooksbank'. When Zara had her babies she was referred to as 'Mrs Michael Tindall'. It's really such an archaic, almost 1950s style. I don't know why they still insist on it. Especially when the woman is the royal, and the man isn't even an aristocrat, if that matters.

At the 1st wedding on dh's side my place name was Mrs dh 1st name dh surname. Was not amused. At least that was the last time I encountered that.

TizerorFizz · 22/06/2025 23:27

@ShamedBySiri He shied away from the winners “rug”. Obviously James Doyle wasn’t expecting it and I’ve never seen that before. He didn’t want to be caught either. Fortunately he turned round and didn’t hold up the next race too much by getting to the far side of the course.

DD went on Friday and I gave her 4 winners. One at 22/1. I was quite pleased with tipping expertise.

CheerfulBunny · 23/06/2025 09:53

I won £36.40 on the Monday which is the most I've ever won! I only ever do little EW bets. The most previously was roughly £32 on Not So Sleepy, possibly my favourite ever racehorse. He was such a character.

TizerorFizz · 23/06/2025 12:27

Monday? Royal Ascot started on Tuesday. Well done though!

Some years ago, I knew a couple who used to receive letters addressed to 'Doctor and Mrs. Surname'. Mrs. Surname was not best pleased, especially given that she was as much a doctor as her husband was!

I don't think that usage persists anymore, thankfully. I get that the royals tend to be a bit behind the times, but it really needs to go.

TizerorFizz · 23/06/2025 14:05

It does on the Royal Enclosure. But you elect to be Mrs (your name) Blog

TizerorFizz · 23/06/2025 14:06

Plus who cares? I don’t go around reading the badges. You could spend all day doing that and it would be very boring.

😁 Absolutely! Carried away by my massive success - and sudden wealth!

TizerorFizz · 24/06/2025 00:34

Thought you might have won it on the dogs??
