I've embarrassed for Meghan saying that her arranging takeaway food on a plate is the same thing as what Figs Heather Hasson has done 😬

Was there ever a couple who squandered so much?
They had it all. A huge amount of goodwill and support. Money, wealth, status, privilege. The most extraordinary opportunities to travel and meet Heads of State, movers and shakers. An extraordinary opportunity with the Commonwealth Trust to make an amazing difference.
Squandered.

When I look back at that press conference for the royal foundation when the four were together and M was acting like she was an expert in the charity field and was being rather smug, it seems ludicrous. She has achieved absolutely nothing concrete since she flounced off. Meanwhile various RF members have been building successful projects. I follow the Queen’s reading room on instagram and it’s amazing what she’s done in a few years. This summer there will be a literary festival at Chatsworth with some big names and it’s completely sold out. Camilla has achieved this because she picked something she was genuinely passionate about and got the right people to help and more importantly, listened to advice. M, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have any genuine interests and thinks she knows better than anyone. That’s why she couldn’t handle the institution of the RF.

@GiveMeSpanakopita thanks for your honest post. I find your insights very enriching on these threads. Nice to read someone who clearly knows what they are talking about!

FenellaFeldman · 18/05/2025 11:08

@JSMill excellent points. Camilla is a case in point. She was unpopular, but has genuinely worked hard on good projects, with excellent outcomes. The Reading Room is brilliant. As is her work to support victims of domestic abuse. It just shows you how some people actively use their privilege and status for good.

HonoriaBulstrode · 18/05/2025 12:19

When I was looking up Peace Adetoro of the SS I came across a different Peace Adetoro. She lives in Luton and campaigns to raise awareness of sickle cell disease, which is more common among people of Black heritage, and to persuade more Black people to donate blood. And I thought, wouldn't that have been a great cause for Meghan to take up?

It would. So many great causes. The late Queen give them the Presidency of the Commonwealth Trust - how many countries does that cover? Millions of people. What an incredible opportunity to learn, to advocate, to make changes to support developing nations.
No, it didn't personally make them millions. Shame.

It’s clear from the pay-to-play stuff she did before she met Harry, and the way she did it, that she was only ever interested in doing good - or rather, looking as though she was doing good - if it raised her profile in the world she’s wanted to be in all her life: LA-based celebrity. All those pre-Harry gigs had the lowest barriers to entry. The most they would have cost her was some money (Rwanda), the least her time - which she ensured she spent in front of the camera. Years of failed auditions and hanging out in places she might be seen but probably was bored stiff at will have helped her home grifting skills. All that stuff was only ever a means to an end, and it still is. When she travels you’ll see there’s always an Archewell or other non- profit meeting she attends, nowadays far less publicised than the real reason she’s traveling (her personal profile). Why? She can expense costs. That’s why it was incorporated in Delaware. The MO is plain to see, now that there distance between her and the RF. This restriction on grifting was the kind of reason she couldn’t handle being in the RF. Her work DNA is the complete opposite: look not what you can do for the people, look for what they can do for you.

It is intriguing how the rich spend their time. I have kids and a demanding job and all the chaos, admin and housework that goes with that. But I just stick on a uniform every day, tie my hair up straight from the shower, live in an ordinary slightly messy house with one car. Even then there’s a lot of “life admin”

I can’t imagine being a high profile person, to be a perfectly, styled, groomed, exercised and coiffured every time you leave the house. Buying and choosing clothes and jewellery for every event, make up and hair, tooth whitening, facials and fillers(?) yoga and massages.

Who plans meals, does the food shop, sorts out the kids homework and activities, arranges home repairs, cleaning, ironing and dry cleaning, books all the cars in for servicing, organises the garden and the dogs, plans the diary, arranges security and the other logistics for trips and events?

Even with staff, this stuff must take a lot of managing. It probably means making a kids packed lunch, dropping them at nursery then sitting at a laptop for an hour designing a logo feels like a days work. Especially when you then have to photograph, edit and post something to Instagram every five minutes. It actually does sound quite exhausting to me, particularly as a lot of it is a contrivance of fame and wealth. I wonder if it is easier just to spend days at home wafting around in yoga pants.

In theory, you have a head of staff who does this for you, even as far as appointing and coordinating other staff, and getting you places on time etc.

But I've always wondered what it's like living in a house like that. Yes, it would be nice to have an organised knickers drawer, but it would also be nice to not have someone poking in my knickers all the time.

TheAutumnCrow · 18/05/2025 14:16

Mylovelygreendress · 18/05/2025 10:47

Yes but they had to walk behind W and C !!

I genuinely feel that if they’d managed to walk behind William and Catherine with good grace and humility, while making a massive success of the Commonwealth Trust, they would have earned the respect, admiration and recognition that they so seem to crave.

They’d be synonymous with the concepts of good will, honour, service, duty, family loyalty, patriotism and ‘world peace, Stan’*. In other words, they could have embodied a veritable selection box of wonderful traits, while riding on the coattails of massively wealthy royalty and its PR output.

But they bollocksed it up for the sake of venal pride, jealousy and access to some freebies. Unbelievable.

*Gracie in Miss Congeniality - fine film, don’t knock it till you’ve seen it …

Having staff is a P in the A if you're not used to it. I assume the Hollywood stars (or their spouses) etc get used to it by starting off small with a cleaner who becomes a housekeeper who suggests a PA for them to work more closely with. The PA suggests more staff once they are struggling to cope. It grows organically.
Harry wouldn't understand this, because he was born into being surrounded by organisation. Megan hasn't allowed it to happen organically. The palace staff would have willingly guided her along if she'd let them.

We have cleaners, and we are rubbish at instructing them now we work from home. When we worked out and about it was easy to leave a friendly note saying "please do the skirting boards and mirrors even if it means skipping the bathroom". Somehow we are rubbish at doing the same in person even though we manage staff at work.

I need a good old fashioned fairy who will do the cleaning in secret if I leave out milk and tiny slippers.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 18/05/2025 14:45

I also imagine there will be a HUGE difference in management styles between H&M.

Harry probably is used to staff doing everything by magic, including decision making. Meghan seems like she'd know better than the staff - e.g. in the garden.

BasiliskStare · 18/05/2025 14:45

Are we looking at extreme editing here - all the questions recorded post-interview, with heavy supervision from Limonada.

Ida - I just can't answer that - others who know better may be able to - just my thought was recorded over zoom might make editing easier - which I suspect she needs.

So to paraphrase a couple of clichés increasingly I think
Meghan's stratospheric launch to fame, marriage and title are writing cheques her talent can't cash & - How do you earn a small fortune - start off with a big one.

I still think they are far from worrying about the roof over their head territory. I suspect H's trust funds are tightly wrapped up - exactly so that he can't piss through them. I suspect apart from the security and eg garden maintenance a lot of their lifestyle is subsidised by freebies of all sorts & if they've any sense they will have got a good proportion of those initial famous lucrative deals invested wisely. Which means they are just very very rich , not Tyler Perry , Oprah rich.

I can't see how at the moment As Ever an be making a profit but lots of businesses don't early doors - maybe NF is backing it up - but on the face of it , short runs of overpriced nicely packaged stuff , even if different seasonal drops doesn't look like the pathway to billions. Maybe they're selling / sharing subscriber lists for some behind the scenes money - But it doesn't look obvious to me at the moment (Note - I have never set up a business 😊)

HiRen · 18/05/2025 15:31

“They’d be synonymous with the concepts of good will, honour, service, duty, family loyalty, patriotism and ‘world peace, Stan’”.

MM has never wanted these things. She has only ever wanted fame and money. She would have gone through the motions of these things if they’d led her to fame and money in the way and at the pace she wanted them. In the end, it turns out that they actually stood in her way - so she ditched them.

Harry I think has been raised to value these things. Whether or not he does or ever did is a different question.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 18/05/2025 15:38

I love The Reading Room.

If I ever become royal (doubtful 🤣) I’d want reading and theatre patronages. Camilla got the best lot!

I would have loved for Camilla to have done a book edition with Meghan like she did with Catherine. I know she referenced The Little Prince on The Tig. I’d be interested in seeing what type of books she likes. I can imagine she’s into self help books like The Secret.

Uricon2 · 18/05/2025 15:39

... was the face of, say, Dior, as was reported at the time of Megxit?

I'd forgotten that @GiveMeSpanakopita . I know it was supposed to have been offered to Diana post divorce and she said no, sensibly in her position IMO. If it was offered to Meghan though she was a fool not to take it.

Apparently Camilla is not into "self help" books. She does acknowledge the benefits of getting lost in a good book and how uplifting good prose can be.

Many white American women have a peculiarly childlike timbre to their voices. You can usually tell when a white American woman was a sorority girl by the high pitch of her speaking voice.

White European women, including British women, generally have a lower pitch. African American women too.

TheMeasure · 18/05/2025 15:51

Gosh, I’ve just remembered how Harry said that Meghan was so good at the job (of being royal); better than many/some of those already doing it.
Bet that went down well with the family.

Funnily enough it ended up going to Meg Bellamy (Kate from The Crown) of all people 🤣

I don’t think it was ever actually offered to Meghan, though. That rumour seemed to come out of nowhere (supposedly from some socialite in the U.S) and then just took off. I’ve seen people suggest it might’ve been pushed by her publicist or even the Sussex Squad to test the waters.

But honestly, Dior doesn’t really feel like Meghan. It’s too structured and feminine for her vibe. She would do better with a brand like Givenchy (clean lines, relaxed silhouette, minimalist), although would they want to collaborate with her after the disaster of her wedding?

Sorry! I see your point. I don't think Meghan is a reader, I strongly suspect that - at most - she'll listen to podcasts. She doesn't strike me as well read in any sense.

What big name brand that values its reputation would want to be associated with either of them? Far too much shit surroundng them, and you don't know what they might say or do next.

Agree with this @PrettyFlyforaMaiTai Givenchy would have been a better aesthetic for her. The problem she has now is even if such opportunities might have been possible at one point, the shitshow of the last few years has done for that. Additionally, she's getting older (in the most unforgiving place possible for women to do so) and while this is clearly not a fault on her part, it isn't going to help with any "glamourous" undertaking.
