The royal family

Do you think some of you are addicted to hating Harry and Meghan?

More and more these manic threads are popping up on mumsnet, wild posts and theories and then hundreds of posts brimming with excitement about catching them out or exposing them. It’s like a game or a hunt. Have many of you crossed the line from interested to addicted?

Claiming that discussing H&M who aggressively court media attention is an addiction is not an effective PR strategy. And I wager that the non-organic nature of the coordinated script is super obvious to many.

Mumsnet commentary on the pair has been mild compared to US media which has turned on the pair. H&M were the punchline for a joke on politically left leaning SNL yesterday. Unfortunately for H&M SNL reaches their target US market for their lifestyle brand (affluent 30 to 50). In addition, the ring doorbell pic went around the internet with large US social media accounts from all across the US political spectrum mocking H.

When celebrities generate and disseminate content, they cannot control public reaction to the content. And all the gatekeeping/gaslighting by super fans will not change this reality.

True!

I suppose to the people who agree with this thread, South Park, SNL, Family Guy, The Windsors, Hell even The Crown, are all obsessive haters because of their unflattering portrayals and commentary of Harry and Meghan.

It couldn’t possibly be because they are worth mocking due to their own silly, crass, arrogant and mean spirited actions. They’re all obsessive haters 🤭

😮 Are you seriously suggesting My2cents1975
that the op, and a few posters like myself have got together off Mumsnet and have cobbled together a “PR strategy” which resulted in this thread appearing?

Because if you are, not only is my flabber truly ghasted, but your perspective is seriously out of whack and you have kind of proved the op’s point!

Suggesting that this thread is part of a PR strategy is a great way to try and stop separate individuals freely expressing their independent opinions though!

Or it couldn’t possibly be that all of these shows are keen to generate money?

Where is the op?
why did she start an insulting and argumentative thread and disappear?

I have no idea because I don’t know who she is any more than you.

Edited to say: but I think their question was legitimate.

If you have any doubts about the authenticity of the op then why not ask Mumsnet HQ to check them out?

If you think this thread was started with innocent intent, you have been misled, some of us have been witness to lots of these very same threads many times!

Because of course we haven’t seen that done before, oh no 🥱

I don’t really like it when people persistently mock anyone, even when I don’t particularly like the person being mocked. I think persistent mocking can seem like bullying and that’s not something I’d get involved in.

As much as I find it strange that some posters here are ‘addicted’, to use the OPs wording, to discussing Meghan and Harry in a negative way, I find it equally strange that there are groups of people who seem ‘addicted’ to defending them and supporting them. It all seems very teenage like to me.

There are famous people that I love and hate and that do things that I like or don’t like, court the media etc, but I don’t spend lots of time online discussing it, maybe the odd comment but that’s as far as it goes. I find it hard to get my head around adults spending hours of their day getting involved in it all on either side.

The strangest thing is that people support Meghan and Harry by being horrible about Kate and William and support Kate and William by being horrible about Meghan and Harry even when the other couple have no relevance to the discussion. Both sides have been negative about each couples children which is awful. It’s like they treat it like a sport.

Well there had to be something to mock in the first place. They don’t just pluck ideas out of thin air. Harry and Meghan are the cause of their own mocking. Harry didn’t have to write about his frozen todger. They didn’t have to demand privacy but then go public with their very dysfunctional private life.

jeffgoldblum · 11/05/2025 20:19

@IAmATorturedPoet, it also appears that due to the thread title that posters have been lulled into thinking that calling other posters addicts is not a personal attack!

Well very true !
however normally goading threads are normally about entertainment not insulting half the posters on the rf forum!

Oh please! I’m not sure I have the energy for this but …

… If you are insisting on turning this in to an “us and them” debate which isn’t accurate because posters on Mumsnet comment from all sorts of different perspectives…

… but to run with that characterisation of these debates…

… then those of us on Mumsnet who don’t always agree with the majority line taken on RF thread, and who have expressed that view in a polite way, have been subject to multiple meme and gif posting, by what appears to be a coordinated group of people. So, if anything, I think we have more reason to protest tbh!

It’s a shame that posters can’t stick to addressing the topic of the thread in a polite and measured way.

Yes but these shows also debate the minutiae of the royals who everyone thinks are behaving impeccably so they don’t really discriminate.

My point is that H&M don’t have to actively generate publicity because people are earning off them already, and will continue to do for so as long as it’s financially lucrative for them to do so!

A lot of modern day humour is mocking public figures. From roasting, satire, parody, Impressionism, sketch shows, observational comedy and even panel shows. I would say it’s a big part of modern day comedy, making fun of people who say and do ridiculous things. And it was actually quite common in the past too. We mock the ridiculous.

I’m sorry I tried reading and following your post but it was too confusing!
why are you insulted that the op started a clearly insulting and goady thread and it’s been noticed?
who said you were part of a faction or different side?

I simply pointed out that the op posted and ran and it’s been seen by many long running posters before!
do you think it hasn’t been done by critical posters too?
there are no sides to criticism!

I’m not sure about that. There are so many goady threads about benefits, autism, adhd, stay at home mums, working mums, infant feeding choices etc. They are set up to insult and offend but are often left to stand. In contrast, I think being called addicted because you post a lot about the Royals is not anywhere near as bad.

My ds is autistic and I take those threads personally!
calling posters who have a different opinion addicts is insulting!
it does no one any favours defending people by insulting others!

I don’t like persistent mocking either, whoever it is directed at.

There’s a difference between fair comment and persistent , gratuitous nastiness.

And I wholly agree that any comment about dc is despicable.

I understand that, but watching a sketch for an hour or going to a comedy show is just a small amount of time, whereas persistently posting day after day in a mocking way seems very different to me and feels more like bullying. I believe in free speech though, I suppose I’m just a little shocked that adults want to spend so much time doing it, but each to their own.

I agree with some of your comments. Some mocking can be downright unpleasant. I disliked Frankie Boyle commenting on Harvey Price for example. And the whole Jeremy Clarkson article on Meghan was disgusting (that wasn’t mocking, that was outright bullying!)

But most comedians make it relevant to what the person has done/said. I love when celebs can take the piss out of themselves, like Adam Driver appearing in an episode after the whole John Oliver skit that involved talking about him that went on for a season.

I warm to people who can take the piss out of themselves. Meghan and Harry seem incapable of doing that.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 11/05/2025 20:45

Not had chance to read this thread apart from the first page but can see what’s happening, as I predicted on another thread, when the shit really hits the fan as has happened with Harry losing his case and the public meltdown interview which spectacularly backfired on him, the fans go very quiet, but comeback on mass once the initial flurry has had died down to insult regular posters, happens every single time when their heroes cock up big style.
