VE Day Parade & Flypast

Is anyone watching the VE Day parade?

My goodness, George has really shot up.

William has drawn the short straw and has Louis next to him. He’s been very patient considering he’s just spent the last few minutes tapping his shoulder trying to get his attention whilst William was talking to a veteran 🤣

Short straw???
from what I can see he is watching and listening to his dad.

He has form for being fidgety and is already being a little fidgety. It’s endearing though, and completely normal for a child of his age. He usually sits with his mum but it looks like it’s William’s turn now. You can tell he’s a little bored, he’s been playing with William’s uniform. I’ve seen a few tongue pokes and eye rolls too 🤣

I thought Timothy Spall’s rendition of Churchill’s speech was very poignant.

Tuned in a short while ago - does anyone know which uniform Princess Anne is wearing?

The king having to salute all this time

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/05/2025 12:54

i like sophie's outfit

MrsLeonFarrell · 05/05/2025 12:55

I've got it on in the background.

Thought so far,

Sophie has a very wide neckline and is very windy i hope she doesn't get a chill

Love the Queen in that blue

Brave to have all the Wales children there but I suppose it's good training

The King's knees must be tired after all the standing up and down taking the salute

I absolutely loved seeing the veterans front and centre

I know! I would be knackered having to do that and I’m half his age 🤣

I think Camilla was suffering from hay fever too. Dashing Keir Starmer rescuing her water bottle 🤭

Thank you

I think the children were very well behaved. I work with children around Louis’ age and would say his ability to sit patiently is definitely above average! The children looked like they were enjoying it and were interested.
I loved Catherine and Sophie’s outfits.

I am picturing them all inside lining up against the radiators to get warm.

He did really well. All the children did. My kids would have got bored and fidget, especially the youngest. We alternate sitting with him as he needs constantly entertaining where as the other one is happy to sit with his thoughts.

80 years ago, so any veterans, must have joined up very young

bluegreygreen · 05/05/2025 13:08

The woman sitting beside the King apparently joined the WAAFs when she was 17

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 05/05/2025 13:10

I love that colour on Catherine.

Sophie’s looked very summery in the pink gingham dress.

William looked very handsome in his uniform. He definitely suits his beard and a hat.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/05/2025 13:10

i think a lot joined up before 18

Not2identifying · 05/05/2025 13:11

I like what Kate was wearing.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 05/05/2025 13:14

I’m glad so many of the veterans were at the forefront. What an amazing generation. I would love to be able to chat with them and hear their stories.

I always loved listening to my grandad’s war times stories but he was on the home front as he was too young to join.

MigGril · 05/05/2025 13:16

Conscription was from 18 during WW2 but you could join from 16 with parents consent and many did, some even tried to sneak in younger.

So yes a lot of the vets who are alive now would have join when very young.

I was very happy to find the coverage without the commentary on BBC iplay so I can listen to the bands uninterrupted.

Some one on another thread said Anne and Charles are wearing the same uniforms that the late Queen and George VI were wearing on VE Day.

You'd have to have been born before 2 September 1927 to have played an active part in the war if you joined up at 18.

And 2 September 1929 if 16 (just seen the post above about that).

Yes they were all well behaved and as i said it's good training. I think though it's brave to have them there knowing that the press will be agog waiting for anything they can write about.

The lady who was just interviewed was remarkable. 101 years old and still so articulate and bright and charming and humble. What a woman! She refused to take any domestic jobs and became a mechanic instead. The Dr who was interviewed next was also incredibly articulate and came across so well, talking about her great grandfather.
