VE Day Parade & Flypast

Is anyone watching the VE Day parade?

My goodness, George has really shot up.

William has drawn the short straw and has Louis next to him. He’s been very patient considering he’s just spent the last few minutes tapping his shoulder trying to get his attention whilst William was talking to a veteran 🤣

Sparce crowds but did people know about it?

Unlike other events it just didn't seem publicised. I didn't know about it until flicking through the BBC News website on Monday morning.

The other big events are either annual like Trooping the Colour or really well publicised like the Coronation.

On another chat site allied to military there was someone in the crowd yesterday who said security was very tight with crowds being kept right back during the parade and only allowed closer to the Mall for the fly past. I got the feeling there had been reason to believe an attempt mass disruption possibly terrorist attack had been suspected. I wouldn't therefore base all judgement on the crowds that were visible on camera. I think also there was a lot more helicopter activity because the Sky presenters even commented on it.

Interesting

Statement made in the house about terrorist arrests. Suspect that’s why yesterday had less people as pp said.

There were the arrests of 7?Iranian nationals over the weekend and held under Terrorism legislation. I am not saying there is a direct link but surely any event like this will be risk assessed and I suspect that no one was taking any chances.

NewAgeNewMe · 06/05/2025 16:17

Agreed and realised I missed out ‘the’ terrorist arrests - duh.

Interesting

Interesting indeed. I wonder if that's why the RF appeared a bit on edge on the balcony.

I suspect they were on edge due to the weather as well. I think the rain fell heavily as soon as the fly past had finished.

NewAgeNewMe · 06/05/2025 17:41

The RF haven’t had an easy time of it since the King’s coronation and Harry’s recent insinuations, along with the terrorist arrests at the weekend, will no doubt have affected them all. There is only so much a person can take.

The pictures taken at the Tea Party at Buck House show all the royals more relaxed and having a good laugh with the veterans. I wonder if the colder weather got to King Charles yesterday?

Must feel so so vulnerable up there 😞

That looked like a really fun occasion. I really hope the veterans had a great time. Unfortunately I have a terrible craving for an afternoon tea now but I really need to get serious about my pre holiday diet.

I have to agree with this, I wasn't fully aware of what was going on and when. It felt like it was announced just a few days before it happened, not weeks/months before as on other occasions. I kind of feel like I've missed out.

Also love that picture of Catherine having a really good laugh with one of the Veterans.

@RosaMoline I just had to ask if you are a Bette Davis fan. "Beyond the Forest" is a wonderful movie: so bizarre and overwrought, with BD chewing the scenery so enthusiastically. And flouncing around. And the wig, makeup and clothes. Great stuff.

Absolutely love Joseph Cotten. Such an elegant actor, and so unlikely to be a small town doctor.

I really loved all of it, I think the Wales children were adorable and very well behaved given their ages and the length of the ceremony. Lovely to see Kate looking so well. Also I note George walks on his own now (or did when leaving the dais) formally and alone, in front of his parents.

Princess Anne fabulous as always and Tim Spall also excellent. I had not realised he was going to give his reading in the style and manner of Churchill so that was a nice surprise.

In the BBC live footage I watched I saw several instances where Camilla appeared to be completely ignoring Starmer (seated right behind her) even when he was expressly speaking to her. It could have just been the timings of the footage though - ie maybe she had to have her eyes on the parade. Did anyone else notice or was my view of this just skewed for whatever reason?

Edited to add - I felt that William, whilst looking dashing, should have been clean shaven when wearing his military uniform. I understand (I think?) that this is no longer a requirement (or he was given special dispensation to have a beard, or something) but I feel being clean shaven would have been the correct mark of respect on this day.

Edited

I saw some footage where it looked as if Keir Starmer was talking to Camilla and she was ignoring him. But in fact there was a white-haired man next to the PM and he was small or a bit slumped in his seat. KS was speaking to him, not to her. Camilla leaned to her right at one point and I could see the man behind her.

I saw somewhere that Camilla was having difficulty opening her water bottle and actually asked Keir for his assistance so I don't think that sits with allegedly snubbing him. I think there is some mischief making going on trying to make up incidents that never happened.

The late QE was found lurking behind a bush in the grounds of BP during a State visit and admitted she was trying to avoid the Ceausescus. I imagine next to some of the people past and present the RF are expected to interact with, KS isn't an issue.

No one's labelled Louis

He's completely adorable, and utterly amazing at public events

Let's face it, how they get those kids to sit still and behave for so long is beyond me!

CurlewKate · 09/05/2025 05:31

I saw a clip where a lip reader said Louis said to William “I thought this was going to be fun” and William said “It is” No idea if it’s true, but I hope it is!

CurlewKate · 09/05/2025 05:33

I do think we underestimate children -yes, they behaved well, but surely most of our children would too in the circumstances? I hope they get rewarded, though.

I agree with this. I think that most of our children would behave well if they were in those circumstances. They behave in their own lives and if brought up in the Royal family they would have been prepared for events like this.

I'm very glad that I didn't have to teach my children how to behave at a public event with the world scrutinising every twitch and producing amateur diagnosis and theories based on the twitch.
