Prince William not in black at Pope's funeral

I think William made a big mistake in not wearing a black suit to the Pope's funeral.
I think it was a sign of disrespect, particularly as he's going to head of the Church of England.

I know the invite said dark suits for men, but everyone else - except Trump of course! - knew that black was expected, and it's not as if he doesn't have a black suit.

HIS COUNTRY IS AT WAR.

And as long as they are AT WAR, President Zelenskyy will continue to dress as he sees appropriate. He has made that clear multiple times and the media has reported it multiple times.
This is the second time I’ve posted this on this thread.

Zelenskyy looked perfectly respectable considering Ukraine is under attack by Russia.

You have a think about that - a nice long one.

I've thought as long as I need to, thank you.
I don't agree being at war means you don't need to follow dress codes.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 27/04/2025 10:28

Honestly, OP, you're being ridiculous. If Catholic convention required black suits, then the Vatican should have put that out in their dress code. They simply said "dark" and William complied with this.

If the Vatican daid "dark" but actually only meant "black", then that's totally on them for failing to state expectations clearly.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that the Vatican would disrespect the pope by issuing incorrect guidance for guests attending his funeral, so I can only assume that any dark colours were considered fine, and that you're just looking for a reason to be offended.

IndigoViolent · 27/04/2025 10:33

@Yellowdresses I find it completely inappropriate and disrespectful that you haven’t changed your username to Blackdresses for the purposes of this thread.

The late Pope is (or was) also the head of state of Vatican City, which is an independent state. I think even on that basis he should have opted for black.

Yes I know, I've been to Rome several times. If the Vatican wanted the men to attend wearing black suits, they would have specified that in the dress code. They didn't.

doodleschnoodle · 27/04/2025 11:43

Seeing as they were specific about the tie colour and other details, it stands to reason that if the suit colour was also to be black, it would have been specifically stated. But ‘dark suit’ was used instead, clearly purposefully. And now we have a seven-page thread about someone following the dress code they were provided 🤷‍♀️

Just like the other thread about William not going to church at Easter. Only he did end up going 🤣 Only for it to be the wrong church in other people’s eyes, only for it to be pointed out Charles never went to the Windsor service with the Queen 🤦🏼‍♀️

Honestly it makes me laugh how people tie themselves up in knots trying to find reasons to shit on William. It must really bother them that he’s so popular and now an ambassador representing his country at important and historical global events.

Theyre going to be frothing when he’s crowned King 🤭

Blackpuddings · 27/04/2025 12:14

Has anyone wondered if he had a wardrobe disaster of some kind whereby he had to change last minute into his only other suit & keep the black tie on? Bcos without it it wld’ve looked too informal? Like he could have spilled something on the black suit? I mean I can’t believe I’m even speculating how Prince William got himself dressed to attend the Pope’s funeral but it must happen?? Bcos from a purely aesthetic pov whilst the black tie with the navy suit were consistent with the dress code, it didn’t look as formal had he gone in full black imo. So maybe it wasn’t intentional?

RhododendronFlowers · 27/04/2025 12:18

William didn't break the dress code. He wore a smart navy suit, white shirt, dark tie, black polished shoes. He wasn't crumpled, he didn't stand out, he didn't make it all about him, he didn't get his phone out, he behaved with decorum and represented the UK well.
Honestly. This thread is making me have sympathy for Prince William, something I never thought would happen!
Just stop picking for no reason!

Have you taken anything for your Trump Derangement Syndrome you poor thing?

You didn’t really gaf about Prince William’s blue suit, any excuse. Why didn’t you call out Biden’s or the countless others who wore blue suit and shock horror blue ties too!

The dress code also specified that women should wear black.

So yes, if the Vatican had wanted to make it clear that men should also wear back, that option was clearly available to them. But they didn’t - they said a dark suit and a black tie. Williams suit was dark. He conformed to the dress code.

jeffgoldblum · 27/04/2025 12:49

Thought he looked appropriate and suitably dressed.

WhatHoJeeves · 27/04/2025 12:50

Wow. How utterly, stupidly inconsequential. William was dressed smartly and appropriately, behaved respectfully, and represented us well, as always. Some people really do want to be offended or 'let down' by everything it seems.

They just dislike him and can't find anything to criticise, so create utter nonsense like this.

Agreed - it’s amazing how desperate these poor people are to find something to criticise. Hold the front page - a man wore what he was asked to wear 🤦‍♀️

Is it because Harry will never be invited to events like these, or just general animosity towards William for being the heir, more popular, more intelligent, a political player and statesman instead of a laughing stock, and relaxed about his hair loss 😂

Blackpuddings · 27/04/2025 03:31

I read on a news outlet that William being C of E & not catholic was displaying this affiliation by wearing a dark navy suit, with the black tie (to show a modern interpretation while confirming to mark of respect etc) Esp as he apparently is pretty secular (unlike his dad). Trump’s was much brighter blue, tie included & he got out & chewed gum & scrolled on his phone during the service. Zero respect.

William wasn’t displaying anything by wearing dark blue in a religious sense
Theres was no requirement to wear black, only a request to wear dark colours.

Which he did

It's all about diversion from the Sussex Shambles.

Is that what it is? Reeks of desperation.

Navy looked better in the strong sunshine.

Genuinely can’t think of anything else the last pope would have cared less about.

No, it's because in this specific instance he should have worn a black suit. Keir Starmer and David Lammy interpreted the brief correctly, as did everyone else, with the notable and disgraceful exception of trump. Even representatives of middle eastern states, who are not Christian, wore black robes.

It's laughably parochial to suggest anyone here gives two hoots about 'the Sussexes' / the RF's ongoing slow motion train wreck.

CleaningSilverCandlesticks · 27/04/2025 14:00

The number of Catholics on here taking offence at the Vatican’s dress code…

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/04/2025 14:01

Very much doubt Francis would have given it a second thought.

upinaballoon · 27/04/2025 14:02

Did Jesus ever say anything about what people should wear? ("What's he got to do with it?" shouted a voice from the back.)
