My daily musing is, what will William do when he is king, who will support him and Kate.
I can’t see B&E ever being working royals.
hopefully KC is around for a long time. But if not and with Anne getting older, he only has Edward and Sophie.

I think that William’s time will be when the perception of the role turns more into a head of state with head of state duties and less ‘royal family firm’.

William and Catherine and George will cover the main constitutional duties, representing the country abroad, investitures and hosting foreign dignitaries.

If William’s children are not married by the time he’s King then they’ll open up some of the more UK ceremonial events to his cousins - as with the garden parties right now and how they all come to Kate’s Christmas concert etc.

For being seen out and about across the country I think they’ll continue with the strategic approach they’ve started right now where they spend 2-3 days in one location and do a number of different engagements centered around a geographical area. There won’t be as many ‘bodies’ doing charity visits as official royal duties.

I think the model will change a lot when William is King. Maybe it would have changed before if the late Queen hadn't been on the throne for so long? I'm not sure really long reigns are a good idea because things stagnate and whilst I don't think the institution should change all the time I do believe it should change more that it currently does in line with how political systems and society change.

I mean, how many people do you need to 'support' you being a ceremonial Head of State? I don't think we need an entire extended family to be 'working' Royals. William, Kate, George and his spouse will just have to step up more than William and Kate have done up to now. The rest of them can turn up to family events like the York girls, Zara etc do now. They even do 'charity work' and are ambassadors for charities, even though they aren't 'working Royals' Its not a full time job now, never mind in 30 years time!

Louise and James?

Unless there is some sort of disaster and William becomes King in the next 3/4 years then I don't see them ever being working royals.

The only tiny chance it would happen, imo, would be if the Wales children were still children and both Charles and Camilla were no longer around an extra pair of hands was needed. Then maybe Louise could be drafted in if she was finished university as she doesn't have the history with the media that Beatrice and Eugenie do.

I don't see it happening though. Their lives have been set up to not be working royals.

He has and will have endless armies of lackeys ready to brief, advise and support. He'll be fine.

The real question may well turn out to be 'Why are we still indulging the idea of an unelected HoS when this man is doing everything but actually standing for the role?'

TulipTiptoer · 23/05/2025 21:14

Why can't we have a Monarch (with his wife at his side) signing papers or whatever they have to do as a Consitutional Monarch and the rest just disappear. That would suit me. King & Queen can host state banquets and all that.

Surely we don't need all the fancy dresses and hats for the wider family and all that malarkey? I am hoping William goes that way. But I hoped for change with Charles so I am shooting in the dark here. Doubtful it will happen. It will probably be more money for less people like now.

We can still have all the ceremonial stuff but we really don't need all this extended family poncing around looking important. They're not important!!

NewAgeNewMe · 23/05/2025 21:18

I’m a constitutional monarchist. Used to be a republican, probably as I’ve got older I’ve changed.

Anyway the stuff happpening across the pond would make me into a raging monarchist.

Sorry for spelling and grammar as I’m just waiting on friends to arrive at restaurant and I’ve already started on 🍷 doesn’t take much anymore to make me squiffy!

Agree. It's ridiculous to assume that a job that in other countries can be done by one person without armies of advisors and courtiers needs a skeleton staff of 8 people. All this ' who is going to support William? handwringing is great PR- do no one turns around and asks what they actually do that is so onerous. Support him to do what? He has already said he doesn't intend doing anything but the bare minimum when he's King. I agree, there will be fewer people but the same amount of money. Just concentrated into fewer people.

I don't think Trump has a skeleton staff of 8. Of course, the UK is much smaller than the USA.

What country has a skeleton staff of 8 for their Head of State? Whether elected or inherited?

Stripeyanddotty · 23/05/2025 22:21

God love George when he inherits the poisoned chalice. There will only be Charlotte and Louis- Archie and Lili won’t be involved.

Baital · 23/05/2025 22:23

Or have I misunderstood your post? Even 8 staff members is excessive for a Head of State?

Which states have fewer than 8 staff members?

The UK may be smaller but there is still the Commonwealth and the King is currently Head of State for 15 countries, I think some people forget the role extends beyond the UK.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 23/05/2025 23:35

I think Beatrice and Eugenie will be do more as time goes on, William and Kate invited Eugenie and Zara to the recent garden party they hosted and Eugenie has also been appointed as a mentor for the King’s Foundation. Some posters think/hope B&E are out in the cold but they are clearly loved and valued members of the family and at the very least we will see them at the races, garden parties etc. over the coming years.

He said he wasn't going to do all the Royal visits and handshaking ( which imo is the purpose of having so many people) and just concentrate on his pet projects, which I assume is only Earthshot. I suspect he will start handshaking sharpish though at any hint of a ' what's the point of having a RF?' though!

Then we're back to their shady dealings in the ME, taking over from.their father, where he has suddenly got his money from and what their role is in the whole Epstein/Chinese spy businesses, and their closeness to the main players in the RF.

Yes that's what I meant. Most countries have a Head of State and their partner does all the other stuff. They don't need to draft in their brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces etc.

Samcro · 24/05/2025 08:08

no handwringing, just musing.
@Tomatotater if he is just going to do stuff like earthshot. which whilst good isn't something that really grabs people. I thing people will question what is the point of them.

There seems to be some confusion here about the role of a Head of State and a President. The King is Head of State-but the actual running of the country is done by the elected Prime Minister and the government. Trump has both roles (God help us) so obvious needs a significant staff. The King, not so much.
