Watching the news about the horrendous rubbish problem in Birmingham, this was followed by Kates film clip rambling about Windermere saying we need to connect with nature and couldn’t help thinking it was inappropriate.I bet cancer sufferers in Birmingham would love to do this instead of holding down a job worrying about col doing chores that I bet she never does and have stinking rubbish with rats in the streets. I have no problem with her video but thought the timing was so off. They sometimes need to read the room.

Im curious. How does one prepare a cheese scone? Just butter? Cream cheese? Marmite or pickle?

Well I’m glad you asked….. purists would stick to just a thick spreading of butter.
I have been known to add a cheeky swirl of marmite to mine !
and in emergency moments cathedral mature cheese spread and marmite!
no pickle if you want traditional. 🤣

Cream cheese and chilli jam for me.
Love a savoury cream tea.

jeffgoldblum · 18/04/2025 13:07

Must apologise for the scone derailment!! 😳
my love of cheese is a legend in my own lunchbox!

IAmATorturedPoet · 18/04/2025 13:07

No, no and thrice no to cheese either in or on a hot cross bun, that's a line crossed for me😂
Cheese on pretty much anything else, most definitely!

BemusedAmerican · 18/04/2025 13:10

My supermarket started stocking Cathedral cheddar a few months ago. I really like the aged cheddar and it's comparable in price to aged US cheddar. For now 😔

I will allow chilli jam as I’m quite partial but have to draw the line at cream cheese!
fine on a bagel but simply not cheesey enough on a cheese scone!! Totally contrasting cheese flavour!
🤣

Fair enough Smile

I used to go to a place where I got white chocolate scones and rhubarb jam. 😳❤️

SoNotaRealHousewife · 18/04/2025 16:25

I do enjoy a nice cherry scone, not cheese though that is just wrong

Baital · 18/04/2025 16:34

I am shocked, SHOCKED, that otherwise decent people put Marmite on a scone.

Marmite belongs on toast.

I’m glad someone else dared voice what I was thinking 🤣 Each to their own I guess.

Marmite belongs in the bin. There, I said it and I’m not sorry. I will die on that hill (is that another Easter joke 🤔)

You have cross(ed) a line there. Marmite has an essential place in every home. But not on scones.

TOAST!!!! Why is everybody getting all fancy when all anyone needs is TOAST!!!!

And maybe crumpets...

Uricon2 · 18/04/2025 17:15

A smear of Bovril from the jar is IMO equal to Marmite in the savoury topping stakes.

Unorthodox I know, but try it, haterz 😂

PS not the veggies, of course. You get a pass.

jeffgoldblum · 18/04/2025 17:21

Marmite is the food of the gods!!!
as is Vegemite to a lesser extent, but you haven’t tasted heaven till you have … toast a crumpet…. Smothered it in butter…. Applied a smear of marmite … then cheese spread, this can be dairylea or cathedral.
it may sound odd but after the recommendation I went on to eat an entire packet of crumpets this way 😳❤️

Extiainoiapeial · 18/04/2025 17:21

My DH drinks a mug of hot Bovril at half time with every footie match he watches. It was something he did as a child!

We get through a lot of Bovril 😂

Baital · 18/04/2025 17:22

I thought I had found my crew on MN. And now I find they put Marmite on scones, and admit to using Bovril.

It's only a matter of time before someone mentions Vegemite 😭

Baital · 18/04/2025 17:23

Agggghhhh! Even as I posted, @jeffgoldblum typed out the V word...

Jeff, love you, love your work, but you're dead to me from now on 😡

NewAgeNewMe · 18/04/2025 17:24

You are all lucky. Marmite and Bovril are not gluten free. Thank the lord (on this Good Friday) that meridian make a gluten free yeast extract which Is very similar to heavenly marmite the food of the god (not gods- it’s Good Friday 😉).

URGENT EDIT: Vegemite is not the same as marmite <gavel>

I am sorry for your loss, and glad you have found a yeasty alternative.

Thoughts and prayers...

Uricon2 · 18/04/2025 17:29

Vegemite is different to Marmite of course and arguably not quite as good but it spreads better. True.

If Meghan ever releases a savoury spread as part of her range, we are all going to implode 😂
