One of the most interesting things to come out of this debacle for me, is how it's comprehensively destroyed the brand that the Sussexes painstakingly fashioned for themselves after Megxit.
In the Oprah interview, the Netflix doc and countless other interviews, H&M went to considerable lengths to position themselves as Outsiders: brave truth tellers calling out the racist and colonialist old hegemony as exemplified by the Royal Family. Moreover, they were bravely taking on the rabid dogs of war which the old Establishment would unleash to shore up its power, symbolised, in H&M's telling, by the British tabloid media.
The talking heads they chose for their Netflix docu were almost all Progressive scholars and activists whose living is made by 'dismantling' the power structures of the Establishment (or 'white supremacy' as they would have it).
What SC has done is to comprehensively destroy any credibility that that Brave Outsider narrative might once have had for H&M fans. She has shown that Harry remains and wants to remain an integral part of the Establishment, as exemplified by his desire to keep Sentebale as a cosy posh boys' polo club, and also by his tendency to imperious and nasty emails demanding that his will be done.
Meghan too is a part of that Establishment, thoughtlessly throwing charity events into confusion by turning up unexpectedly with an A lister in tow (a logistical nightmare without prior notice, as anyone who's ever organised large scale public events will know), and publicly treating a high-status Black woman like a mediocre functionary onstage.
And both Meghan and Harry are perfectly comfortable unleashing the dogs of war in both legacy and new media - as long as those dogs will do their bidding.
Like many on this thread, I never believed H&M's post-Megxit Outsider positioning. But millions did and it won them countless new fans. Now, that facade has been torn down and a nastier, far less palatable pair have been revealed.
