It did annoy that she went to Givenchy.

I was disappointed by that on the day - and I liked and supported them at that point. For such a high profile occasion it should have been a British, or Commonwealth, name.

I don't think the tights thing needed to have anyhing to do with protocol. I can think of several reasons why as a parent Catherine might have wanted Charlotte in tights:

May in England can be chilly. If it had been a cold day, bare legs would have been miserable
At Catherine's own wedding, when the bridesmaids were sitting on low stools, while the service was in progess, one of the small bridesmaids fidgeted so much that if she hadn't been in tights, her knickers would have been on show, to a global audience of millions.
Charlotte had only just turned three. Even if she was normally reliable, Catherine might have wanted to put her in a pullup for the occasion, just to be on the safe side. Tights would have concealed it.

Edited

In retrospect, the choice of Givenchy shows that she wasn't willing from the very beginning to do what a member of the Royal family should do. There were other Givenchy dresses later too.

It did annoy that she went to Givenchy. I feel the British RF should be championing British fashion and there's plenty of talent. I know the actual designer was British but the headline was that it was designed by Givenchy. Of course Stella McCartney did the evening dress and I think that's the nicest thing I have ever seen her wear. In general, in her brief time as a royal, she didn't wear that many British brands, IIRC.

The only headlines I recall about the dress emphasised the nationality of the designer and seemed to take pride in the fact that a British woman was such a big shot in the world of international couture.

www.nytimes.com/2018/05/19/style/meghan-markle-wedding-dress.html
Here's one example - "Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy..."
The article goes on to quote a Kensington Palace statement lauding the British woman who had served as creative head of three prominent fashion houses.

www.bbc.com/news/uk-44055385
"The pure white, boat neck gown was designed by British designer Clare Waight Keller, the artistic director of French fashion house Givenchy."
This article refers to the "Birmingham born designer" and notes that Brits John Galliano and Alexander McQueen also led Givenchy, and suggests the choice of the first woman to head Givenchy was significant.

I suppose I can understand a bit M and H not knowing much about toddlers before she had her own children. But Spare was written years later and she still can't see C's side of things.

We’re creating multidimensional, interesting, kind, creative people. That’s who our kids are.

Unlike normal mortals who leave theirs to be raised by wolves, or of course the Waleses who probably insist on them wearing ducal coronets at breakfast, in HaM world.

I know there's been discussion about how everything they do is now pitched to a middle class US audience, but I've known/know quite a few Americans who fit that bill. NONE of them would make a comment like that without falling about laughing at themselves.

They make comments like that in all earnestness and sincerity when their children are young. By middle school they've usually been chastened..

Well, we'll see if that changes. I think believing your own kids are the most special beings in creation is entirely normal, but to put comments like that out to be read globally is silly, and I'd say the same if the Waleses came out with equivalent.

@BasiliskStare - gulp, I liked her dress too - probably because it was very similar to mine from 1996. It did make her look a bit no-waisted though. In 1996 I had a wasp waist (2025 a big bumblebee waist ☹️ )

I remember reading that Meghan hadn’t even wanted Charlotte as a bridesmaid, but was “ordered” to include her. Once relations had soured between Meghan and Kate I expect every interaction was fraught. I wouldn’t like to annoy Meghan - scary!

MissFenellaPrism · 25/02/2025 16:49

Imagine how desperate they were to slag off Kate that they picked on her about lipgloss! How petty. Imagine if she had done anything mean!

Or said anything incontrovertibly racist.
I can't believe that, for the 18 months M was a working royal, she never heard a single, irrefutably racist remark from.any of them.

Treeleaf11 · 25/02/2025 19:35

I liked M's wedding dress as well. I preferred it to Kate's, wasn't keen on the lace and the pointy boob effect.

I agree, I don't like visible cups on dresses, although the skirt part was beautiful.
I thought Meghan looked lovely, although the fit wasn't great, but the boat neck with long sleeves is a tricky look.
The veil and tiara were stunning.

MrsLeonFarrell · 25/02/2025 19:39

The bridesmaid dresses were the subject of a fascinating thread last year (i think) when the tailor who fixed them had ended up in the papers. Lots of really knowledgeable people who sew explained what had possibly gone wrong and why it wasn't simply a matter of taking a seam in. I recommend it to anyone who is interested.

I liked Catherine's and thought it was suitable for the scale of the occasion.

The fit of Meghan's wouldn't have been a problem for a wedding that wasn't televised but in the context it was a dreadful fit. I remember Sophie's wedding dress was also too loose.

BunnyLake · 25/02/2025 19:46

Phillip, Charles and Harry all have quite close set eyes. In the baby video, Archie has them too.

There's a picture of Phillip with a big bushy naval beard and he and Harry look very similar.

George looks a lot like both William and Diana (The baldness doesn't suddenly stop him looking like his mum no matter what Harry think!). Charlotte looks like the Queen and Sarah Chatto and Louis looks like Grandpa Middleton.

Although I agree about the close set eyes and nose Phillip was an absolute stunner in his younger days. Talk about Greek god (even if he wasn’t technically Greek).

The same can’t be said for Harry, who is more muppet.

StrawberryWasp · 25/02/2025 19:50

The text messages reveal that relations were already frosty and strained between M & C by the time of the bridesmaid saga.

I think Kate saying Charlotte cried because it didn't fir was goady nonsense. Charlotte probably cried because of all the tensions of the adults at the fitting.

But Ms responses are just rude. Right. Look. Here.
One word sentences.
Like the other mums (nice mums not making a fuss).

They obviously really couldn't stand each other even then.

Oh to hear Kate's stories. But we never will.

Oh poor old Sophie, she was beautiful but that dress really didn't fit. That and the truly horrible tiara. She deserved better!

Regarding tights and knickers wasn't there an incident where Lady Louise's dress flew up and revealed her knickers?

Can't remember when but I think the press were very good and didn't show the photos?
Evil press.

I think it may have been at Meghan and Harrys wedding, actually. Good for the evil press.

Weren't you the poster who suggested the children should be kept hidden in case they have 'African Features?

I can tell you I know about but don't give a toss about critical race theory because it's corrupt nonsensical twaddle.
Your stupid game of veiled threats is over.

I might be totally off base here, but didn't Harry say that he wasn't relating Kate's texts verbatim? Just the gist?

Uricon2 · 25/02/2025 20:01

Prince Philip was breathtakingly handsome as a young man, you can see why the late Queen as a teenager went "Mine!" in the way she did and never wavered.
