Starting a thread for Tuesday.
This BBC article covers the basics. This is the last line ….
Tuesday really is the beginning of the end. And someone is going to lose - and lose big.

I have a feeling, that Harry won’t win but he just wants to use the public setting to air his grievances. A therapy session would have worked out much cheaper.

Prince Harry leaves the court during his hacking case against the Daily Mirror. He wears a dark coloured suit, white shirt and tie. His barrister David Sherborne, also dressed in a dark suit is on his left. A crowd of photographers are behind a metal...

Prince Harry versus newspapers: This is the one that matters

Prince Harry’s legal battle against British tabloids for allegedly unlawfully intruding into his life reaches its most important moment on Tuesday.

I wonder and I’m probably completely barking but I’m surprised he’s settled after all he’s said but I wonder if it’s anything to do with Charles’ health? If anyone thinks im wrong or this is bad taste or against guidelines im happy to be reported.

Given the number of posts, seems like lots of people care

You do realise it's possible to discuss something without actually caring! Your insightful input will no doubt be noted!

I think it’s more to do with concern about money . He and Meghan have a very expensive lifestyle with numerous staff including security and although they are wealthy by most people’s standards , they will only have his Chimpo salary if Netflix ends their contract .

Nothing says easy, breezy not-caring like bold, italics and an exclamation mark.

@mainecooncatonahottinroof

The word 'settlement' is a term used when a matter settles / the dispute is resolved. A matter doesn't have to go to trial to succeed.

Plenty of cases are settled by defendants (and claimants) where one party very clear 'wins'. A defendant paying damages, costs and issuing an apology is more likely than not, a win.

What do you see as a win?

It's a win when the case is heard, concludes and has an outcome, plus an admission of liability.

This is a compromise, with concessions on both sides. I would have thought you would have know that.

How is this a 'win' for Harry? He wanted to get to the heart of the corruption and he didn't do that. I don't blame him for not pushing he envelope, but a win would have meant achieving his stated intention, and he did not do that.

I'm terribly disappointed we didn't get to see Harry on the stand !
It would have been great .

Me too 🤣

What do you see as a win?
It depends on what my client sees as a win. Harry told us all openly what he was looking for out of this trial: accountability for MGN’s senior executives. He didn’t get that.

Okay sure.

Harry him self said: "If you’re forced to settle, there is no justice… one of the main reasons I’m seeing this through, is accountability because I’m the last person that can actually achieve that and also closure for these 1,300 victims and families"

Honestly if they want to keep their Netflix contract they should do an alt-universe fiction series based on what the trial would have been like. The Crown but even more invented and feverish.

jeffgoldblum · 22/01/2025 19:26

So disappointed @NotaRealHousewife ! , I would have liked to hear more about his deleting of evidence especially! , particularly as his own solicitor was accusing the other side of this.
And it always entertaining when he gives us 'his' truth 🤣

Mourning the loss of the fragrant Chelsy once again? I wonder if he's ever taken a step back and decided that the bad things happened for a reason, and that he'd be unlikely to be living his best life in California with his one true love if they hadn't?

Same! He should have taken a more pragmatic, considered approach and not stated publicly that he was taking this all the way. People might have viewed the settlement more positively if he had shut his mouth.

Well he's got his money and good luck to him with it, but he will be forever left wondering what might have been, and if he could have managed to get Murdoch et al on the rack...

NotaRealHousewife · 22/01/2025 19:29

It's amazing how values and principles can fly out of the window as soon as a decent amount of dosh is put on the table

jeffgoldblum · 22/01/2025 19:30

@mainecooncatonahottinroof indeed! , he's his own worst enemy, he opens his mouth and drops himself in it all the time, let's face it , if he hadn't droned on about his brothers " shocking, advanced ( more than his own ) balding " , no one would mention his at all!

Not to mention the 30 pieces of silver offer of positive press from a much hated tabloid, for his wife who was not a hacking victim, if @Delphigirl is to be believed.

NotaRealHousewife · 22/01/2025 19:31

I do wonder what pearls of wisdom he would have bestowed upon us

TheCraicDealer · 22/01/2025 19:31

He’s not won any more than he would have “won” back in the spring/summer when Hugh Grant settled. NGN’s representatives will have been trying to settle this for months if not years, but he made the case previously that he wanted accountability. That was his goal and it’s not happened. He’s not got what he wanted, and he probably could have achieved a similar outcome to this months and months ago without incurring more costs and letting him move on with his life.

Perhaps costs spiralled beyond initial estimates, and then there’s obviously rumours about the future of their commercial enterprises…suddenly he’s in a very precarious financial position and any proposal where he can walk away without a huge bill becomes very attractive. NGN were already prepared to fire money at him to draw a line under this and an apology, however fulsome, costs them zero. They’ve avoided disclosing what Harry previously indicated was evidence that “needed” to come out. When you look at it that way, I wouldn’t be quick to say Harry won anything apart from proving his detractors right about his lack of conviction, but he’s lucky some people will be delighted to buy his spin on it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/01/2025 19:33

He MUST have been aware about the financial risk he was taking because he referred to it himself in being a champion for those who could not afford to do so

Another excellent post, @BreadInCaptivity, but just picking out this bit I'd suggest it's one thing Harry excitably spouting off about being a "champion taking risks" and quite another for him to actually understand what's involved

God knows we've been here often enough before, most notably with his whining about the changes in security which would surely have been obvious to anyone with any sense - except he doesn't appear to have any, which is why I could believe it took someone to practically nail him to a chair at this late stage to get the message through

I can't quite see it having been Sherborne though; after all his gravy train ends along with the case (unless he's been used for the Mail and RAVEC ones too?)

Exactly - he needs to learn a little discretion because these things will always come back to bite him on the arse!

PrincessofWells · 22/01/2025 19:34

Partybagprick · 22/01/2025 19:05

You clearly don't understand how many hours of work and legal costs are clocked up in the approach to a 10 week trial. These have to be offset against your settlement (which I would have thought includes a costs settlement). As nobody knows what sums are involved, there's every chance he's worse off than he would have been had he settled earlier, simply because his legal fees are much higher.

I think you'll find the other side paid all his legal fees in full.

jeffgoldblum · 22/01/2025 19:35

@NotaRealHousewife .... blah , blah , blah ... im superior! , I'm a prince , my truth is the real truth etc etc ... I'm imagining , let's face it he thought it was the courts job to find his evidence for him in his last case!
And just his opinion and suspicion wasn't enough!🙄

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/01/2025 19:39

He should have taken a more pragmatic, considered approach and not stated publicly that he was taking this all the way. People might have viewed the settlement more positively if he had shut his mouth

People might well regard a lot of things more positively if he shut his mouth, @mainecooncatonahottinroof - or at least if he made more sense when opening it

But he doesn't seem capable of doing that, so here we are

PrincessofWells · 22/01/2025 19:41

Atlasvue · 22/01/2025 19:12

I’m very clear how it works. What he said in the past was lies- he had no intention of fighting the ‘good fight’ and just wanted money. He’s made an absolute spectacle of himself…for a few extra dollars.

More than a few extra pounds. Murdoch was desperate for this not to go to trial. It would have oppened a Pandoras Box.

Partybagprick · 22/01/2025 19:42

PrincessofWells · 22/01/2025 19:34

I think you'll find the other side paid all his legal fees in full.

And how can you possibly know this?

And legal fees don't go into his pocket, they go to his legal team. So he's not gained anything material for himself, has he.
