Just seen on Sky News. Breaking News headlines. Delayed because of the wild fires didn't say if this was technical difficulties or it would be a bit crass to launch a frothy type lifestyle show with all the devastation. Anyway it might be shelved for good with any luck.

@Atlasvue yes about the ballcap. Did you notice the LA ballcap in the hugging her staff pictures?

EdithWeston · 15/01/2025 19:43

What they actually said was that they wanted half and half - they did not want to leave the UK and expected to remain as part of their new balance

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".
"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

Harry said that they were leaving, because they felt if they left, the headlines would stop (obviously that’s insane)

They wanted to leave the UK and continue to pop back the stand on the balcony occasionally, to be able to keep up the appearance as a royal.

There’s no way they could make the sort of money they wanted to in the UK.

Atlasvue · 15/01/2025 20:03

Popping back to the UK isn’t the same as continuing to live here

Atlasvue · 15/01/2025 20:05

The main point of my post being- How can Meghan survive all this but fell apart because of mild criticism in the UK?

Yes, but that's all that's really open to H now.

Because half/half was turned down, and they decided after that to leave (some would say flounce) and then the revisionism on their reasoning began.

That was just a convenient excuse. She just didn’t like the constraints that come with being a member of the RF, or fully grasp the pecking order - and it became apparent that her behaviour towards others wasn’t going to be tolerated. She thought she was getting a palace and a life of glamour on the international stage, instead she got a house and ribbon cutting in Swindon on a wet Monday afternoon.

MrsJ92 · 15/01/2025 20:14

She was the one that actually said it should be delayed. A bit of a cringe post. Anyone who likes that kind of show will watch it and if you don't like the show or her then simply ignore. A lot of the British press post on her because it sells. If she steps out for a show, makes jam, does any charity it's all a problem. Almost like she's not allowed to be seen or heard. I think everyone should move on. Kate and William are here and are doing great? So let's leave the others.

Can I just divert briefly to say how much I have enjoyed, over many many threads, phrases such as this, used to signify the duller but worthy end of royal duties Grin

Which is a very good question but one that would have been considered heresy a few years ago, even on MN.

Ribbon cutting in Swansea doesn't seem so different from serving food in Pasadena.

Ohpleeeease · 15/01/2025 19:50

They said this, but all their actions since have indicated that this wasn’t their intended goal.

Meghan never intended to live in the UK. Even if things had gone well, hers would always have been visits. Her heart and soul is in California.

I think if royal reality had matched her movie-style expectations that they would have made it work in the UK - I imagine she hadn’t realized just how rigid the year round schedule is - the working royals only get to really ‘disappear’ during the summer.

It’s a very predictable and regimented life - you are always at the same set events every year for the rest of your life.

Ahh, but the differences are a)big house b)the ability to pick and choose when and where they’ll appear and c)no rain. Oh, and their very own The Office Of.

I think if they'd stuck around and behaved, Charles as King would have gifted them either a country pile or a posh London residence. Frogmore seemed like a 'starter home' to me, especially with the unusually short lease.

I agree with your other points. I think control is key for them, especially her. Controlling their appearances, picking and choosing who covers them, and having their own 'office', pretend though it is, rather than being lumped in with all the other B list royals. Thing is, you can't really control what people think of you, and the more you try, the less you succeed.

But that was always a fantasy, it would never have been her reality. And the responsibility for not knowing that lies squarely on her shoulders. She joined as a working royal, she should have established what the job was.

The Cambridges lived in a rented house on Anglesey and in Nott Cott until George was about 1, getting Anmer Hall in parallel as their country pile, and then the state apartment 1A in KP in 2014, with later decision to make a Windsor estate cottage their main home for the time being.

Similar for the Sussexes - Nott Cott as newly weds, with country house soon after (Frogmore Cottage being a large house by "normal" standards) and every expectation that their London residence would be swopped to state apartment 1 in KP idc.

There's really not a lot of difference in how they were housed!

LivelyMintViper · 15/01/2025 20:53

The article by Lauren Welsh in the Express is 100% positive about Meghan. Her activities etc. Effusively so. She has not simply glossed over the many critical comments she has airbrushed them out completely! Maybe trying to redress an imbalance in other papers?

Unfortunately that fantasy is shared by a lot of Americans - cue Oprah gasping in horror at their small pokey cottage.

I thought one of the most interesting parts of Spare was Harry’s description of how opulent he found William and Kate’s apartment in Kensington Palace when he visited with Meghan - he describes it as though he’s seeing it for the first time.

But of course we know that he’s been there many times over the years before Meghan - at least once on camera for posterity when helped host the Obamas there.

So he’s not seeing it for the first time - he’s internalized Meghan’s experience and feelings as his own. Before her, he had years to spruce up Nott Cottage - he had years to lobby for different accommodation or buy himself a new sofa like a grown up.

He was content with Nott Cott - he knew that Catherine and William had lived there up to and with baby George. So he’d seen it nicely furnished before.

She then goes on to grasp this woman's folded arms to try to give her the famous hug.

wordler · 15/01/2025 22:57

This was how he describes it:

“The wallpaper, the ceiling trim, the walnut bookshelves filled with volumes of peaceful colors, priceless works of art,” Harry recalls. “Magnificent. Like a museum.”

So weird - he’s lived his WHOLE life in the royal family at this point - surrounded by exactly that sort of decor in every one of the many many homes and palaces his family own.

He is friends with some of the richest and poshest people in the country who all have homes exactly like this.

How is it that he didn’t notice any of this until Meghan appears on the scene.

Why was it such a shock to notice that William was living in a home that mirrors 90 percent of the aesthetic and lifestyle of his family?

Well at least there will be no more donation drop offs that she happens to be photographed at

CNN:

Donations of in-person goods are at capacity in Los Angeles County, including at many charities across the county. The county expressed gratitude for “overwhelming outpouring of generosity from the public,” but said the physical donations are “well beyond what many charitable organizations can process at this time.”
“LA County is working with our public and private partners to triage the flow of generous and well-intended support, and to develop systems to identify the most urgently needed items and get them to the people who need them in the most effective way we can,” the county said on its website.

Basically, it’s not helping turning up with bags of donations. They need money
