Just seen on Sky News. Breaking News headlines. Delayed because of the wild fires didn't say if this was technical difficulties or it would be a bit crass to launch a frothy type lifestyle show with all the devastation. Anyway it might be shelved for good with any luck.

My twopenny worth….
Looking in to my crystal ball, in 10 years, at 50, Harry will be in the style of Earl Spencer.
Back in England in a country estate. Quiet but occasional statements at times about mum. Lurid love life, first family living on a different continent and the kids intermittently in the spotlight for their titles and connections. Seemingly settled second life with new wife and more kids….
But essentially a sideshow.

I can’t see it . Firstly where would the country estate come from? Not William! Secondly, he’s not a country person. I also don’t think he’s likely to bounce from wife to wife like his Uncle. He’s desperate for security and a wife he can count on to be there for him.

I think he might live somewhere quietly and meet someone else who matches him more in terms of interests . Perhaps N York,
more likely S Africa . If the latter, he could live in a gated community with security. In some ways he just isn’t going to be able to fit back into the life of an impoverished aristocrat. I think most of his former set will steer well clear. I also can’t ever see him reconciling with William. Too much blood under the bridge.

I've always found it strange that being in the Army for 8 years is held up as a reason for Harry being down to earth and understanding real life. The Army is highly regimented and if you live in single quarters, it's like living in a (shit) hotel - someone cleans, someone cooks your breakfast, there's no commute.

The reason the Forces can be good for young lads from poorer backgrounds is that by putting in that structure, it gives them something they have never had and the opportunity to learn a trade.

For someone like Harry, it's more of the same from home and boarding school. Then when he left, he moved to Nott Cott and the same thing happened. While I appreciate that William's job working for the Air Ambulance was a bit of a vanity job, it would have brought him into contact with some horrific sights. I'm not surprised it unlocked something traumatic in him and he used it for good.

pelargoniums · 20/01/2025 08:11

Doesn’t he even say in Spare that he’d furnished Nott Cott like a shit bachelor pad and Meghan had to buy them a sofa with her credit card? The concept of doing stuff for himself, hopping onto Ikea online and ordering something, it’s all beyond him. In that sense I do pity Meghan a bit – she’s privileged but she has real-life experience in terms of understanding money comes in, money goes out, cooking and cleaning up after yourself; Harry won’t understand tax, insurance, cost of living, has no real work experience or further education, but also won’t be practically minded enough to be the stay at home dad, homemaker role. She has to do everything; he’s just the star name draw.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with nannies and housekeepers – if I had Sussex or Cambridge cash I’d make my life easier too – but the idea he’d truly prefer that life is nonsensical. Will & Kate don’t have that life – lots of cosplaying the school run and “look, they do their own supermarket shop, just like us!” make-believe, but they have plenty of staff. Why wouldn’t you?

(Incidentally my favourite “royals vs real life” anecdote is that Charles shrieked when first confronted with clingfilm.)

Along with the concept of having to use his own money to buy anything.

To be fair I'm with him on this. It's the devils work. 😂

I really loved this modest yet abused narrative they pushed. I bet neither William or Harry knew that houses don’t just function like that,

there are an army of property managers doing all the work that makes these cottages liveable and functioning.
utilities , maintenance , landscaping, it’s all been taken care of.

they probably just thought that shopping at Waitrose or whole foods , buying a lamp or sofa from ikea is essentially what makes them regular people.

Yes indeed. No wonder he was aghast at he idea of having to pay for his own security! Thinking Mummy’s money was for his children . It’s is toxic.

Don't mean to derail and digress... but this reminds me of when I worked in an independent school and there was means-testing for bursaries (the school gave bursaries to able children from poorer families). A very wealthy international family with Swiss bank accounts etc applied. When their investments were scrutinised and their eligibility questioned they said 'Oh yes, we do have all those millions but we didn't want to dip into those funds for school fees'. They couldn't see what the problem was!

This reminds me of Sarah Ferguson, who one said in an interview (her engagement one, or early married life?) how she was a grounding influence on (what, what look there’s a squirrel) Andrew, and said how weird it was to be with a man who had literally never been in a supermarket

To be fair , I do think that William is much more grounded thanks to marrying Catherine and the influence of the Middletons .
W and C seem to be doing their best to give their DC as normal a life as possible .

I think the few years they spent as newly weds in Wales whilst he worked in the air ambulance service probably helped too. I know that wasn't normal by everyone else's standards but they probably did do some normal stuff like venturing into Tescos and making a spag bol for tea some of the time.

Harry went into the army which is not a normal day to day living type life. So just a different type of bubble.

I'm sure both of them are a bit more aware of ordinary life than the royal generations before them just because of the internet and social media but it's probably still an abstract concept to some extent.

Wanttoadoptadog · 20/01/2025 12:12

lots of cosplaying the school run

I don’t think William and Kate cosplay the school run I think it’s something one of them genuinely does each day if they can, and the only supermarket pictures I’ve seen are when Kate was doing the shop when they lived on Anglesey, I don’t think I’ve seen this since they became working royals bar the odd mobile phone shot of Kate and the kids at The Range or suchlike.

Lifestooshort71 · 20/01/2025 12:16

Neither of our neighbours ever go supermarket shopping but have regular online deliveries. They're not posh.

wigsonthegreenandhatsforthelifting · 19/01/2025 17:05

I really do hope so. It beggars belief.

However I have cut short conversations IRL with friends/colleagues where if you criticise in the mildest way you get, "oh no, I love Meghan and Harry"!!!

Now I realise that most punters don't have the level of detail about their behaviour that gets discussed for example here, but it's beyond me to understand, what is their pull?!! The more we learn about their behaviour, the worse it gets!

I was verbally attacked when replying to a post on fb and I had said that I couldn’t stand MM, Harry or Andrew.
This was then turned around to accuse me of saying M & H were on a par with pedophiles. It was utterly bizarre and there was no reasoning with those who attacked me so I gave up and blocked them.
Also, any sign that you don’t like M constantly gets an accusation of racism.
It is a sad state of affairs for genuine victims of racism that this is used in such a way.

Fergie was speaking in the 1980s (engagement/early married life)

There was no online shopping then, and very little delivery service (none from supermarkets)

I was very rarified to have never done a food shop

Vespanest · 20/01/2025 12:37

I still think the biggest failure of Harry in not understanding the annual money he received from Charles was a salary for being a working royal. His entitlement from his heritage alone, hence the throwing of toys when his father had cut him off or was about to was alien to him and the things he ultimately promised Meghan was untrue. I have no doubt this was explained to him but just as he believed his family would simply get over the book, he believed that he was always going to be subbed and treated as a working royal both financially and security wise until he made enough money to laud it over them on how he was successful.

JanuaryCrow · 20/01/2025 12:38

Changing the subject here, but I agree with other comments on MN that a lot of the vibe of Meghan's Netflix show was tied in with a predicted Kamala Harris victory that then didn't happen.

Harris was promoting 'joy', one of the twin themes of her campaign, the other one being 'love'. 'I'm a lover!' said Jennifer Lopez, at her Harris election rally address. (I was just watching a YouTube clip of this for reasons of putting off doing some work.)

The Harris campaign message was, We need joy, be lovers not haterz. Joy and love!

And it all seems so vapid and flat and silly now that Harris lost and it's Inauguration Day.

I did see a photo of Catherine and her father loading shopping into a car outside Waitrose ( I think) and was Catherine not spotted in Sainsbury’s ( I think) choosing Halloween costumes with the DC ?

What about the Windsor Farm shop or was that a look-a-likey?

WeCantGoOverIt · 20/01/2025 14:05

I think the challenges presented by a trip to Waitrose as a senior royal would be considered a disadvantage to anyone marrying in.

I think it was devised as a series last Spring, wasn't it, coinciding with ARO being launched? Mindy Kailing filmed her bit with Meghan when she was two months post partum, which would have been April 2024. Kamala Harris wasn't running for president until Biden dropped out in very late July. I think laying this ill advised and frankly old fashioned concept's failure at the feet of the failed Harris campaign is yet another bit of "poor Sussexes, bad timing, bad luck" locus of blame shifting.

I remember someone posting here saying how they'd hate to be royal because you couldn't just pop out to Tesco.
God! I'd loathe that luxury being taken off me too.

😂 the only thing I would hate is keeping that slim, I could put up with everything else, I'd rather the ribbon cutting in Swindon to the state banquets but both are better than my current job 😂 I agree with pp about Harry not realising that all these things are what pays the bills.

JammyTodger yes you are probably right, just more excuses.

Do wonder if Trump will make the Visa application public
