PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 09/01/2025 19:47

Meghan and Harry have released a statement in regards to the California wildfire via their Sussex.com website.

It reads:

”In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighborhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centers, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life.
A state of emergency has been issued.
If you feel compelled to help, here are some resources and ideas:
Support
Organizations such as José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, which has been a longtime partner of The Archewell Foundation, are serving meals to both first responders and victims of the fire.
CAL FIRE and LA Fire Department Foundation and others are working closely to support firefighters who risk their lives, bravely showing up in these high-risk environments to help save homes, families, and communities in need.
Animal Wellness Foundation is continuing to house and care for animals evacuated by the fires while Compton Cowboys is providing emergency transportation services for horses.
Airbnb and 211LA have partnered to provide free, temporary housing for those who have been displaced.

Baby2baby is providing essential supplies including diapers, clothing, hygiene products, and emergency kits to families in need.
All Power Books and many others are staying open for emergency use, offering supplies and water for pickup while working tirelessly to distribute essentials to those affected.

Open your home
If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do. And be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbors to see if they need help evacuating.
Give back
Some families and people have been left with nothing. Please consider donating clothing, children’s toys & clothing, and other essentials. The American Red Cross is on the ground helping those in need.”

Helping animals helps us all.

Non-profit organization leading in animal rescue, animal protection and awareness; and low-cost medical care. Adopt, volunteer and foster opportunities available!

Incidentally- do people think that when other well known people or members of the royal family are seen doing good works it's just coincidental that there are cameras there?

CurlewKate · 13/01/2025 20:20

@mainecooncatonahottinroof "Quite the heroes of the hour, aren't they?!🙄"

No.

@mainecooncatonahottinroof "
I'm saying that there are plenty of other sources of this information! Why do you care so much about them posting it?"

I don't. I just thought it was a perfectly ordinary thing for them to do until this thread told me otherwise!

It's definitely ordinary to do - but it's just weird they way they choose to do it. The resources and situation on the ground for needs is changing so much day to day that it makes much more sense to keep updated information coming via social media - why isn't Meghan using her new IG account - yes, she's only got 1.5M followers so far but as noted it would get shared and reported and reach a wider audience.

And the visit, she lost so much credence with me with the Ulvade visit - which was pure performative PR - that it's hard not to see the faux royal touring of the devastation in the same way.

They don't seem genuine - in the way someone like Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bette Midler etc have been with their social media posts.

Well they know whatever they do will be reported in the media and on socials by other people who want to criticise them. So the media outlets have helped by reposting their statement and then anyone sharing it on socials whether with good intentions or with the intention to criticise them it still got shared and ultimately reaches more people tha having x number of followers.

Same with their netflix show, why spend money marketing it when you can get free publicity from everyone jus ttaliing about them, good or bad it's free publicity and people are talking about it.

Members of the royal family don't just randomly show up to do 'good works' though. Their appearances are scheduled well in advance and the press will arrange to be there. So now, it's obviously not just coincidental.

Random celebrities, which is what the Sussexes now are, may just happen to be filmed when going about 'good works'. But often they will have 'arranged' for cameras to be present.

No.

Guess the sarcasm passed you by.

It's typical of their preaching at people. I'd sooner they would lead by example, if they feel they need to have an influence on the world at large!

Are you saying they're behaving in this bizarre way for publicity?

It’s not about reaching people actively seeking the information, there’s Google for that; it’s about getting in front of passive eyeballs and making them go “Oh, hang on”. M&H had their statement and links to charities shared across the Daily Mail, People, Mumsnet, a really wide array of publications – they had a huge reach and if that reach is converted to clicks and donations, that’s brilliant.

It wasn't shared though for positive reasons. It's because people are thinking wtf which could be the opposite effect that charities need.

No she didn’t. She was filmed on another visitor’s phone after they realised who she was.

Now you are just making things up.

She was as low key as someone in her position could be - walked up with one female protection officer.

She probably anticipated that she'd be spotted but in that particular situation that in itself was the supportive move considering how the police were policing the memorial tribute.

That's how it works when you are doing something for the issue, for another person and not for your own publicity.

itsstillmehere · 13/01/2025 20:46

The people who do the most good in this world are usually the ones who are the quietest about it.

What is bizarre about sharing information on where people can go to provide help or donate? Plenty of celebrities living in Califnornia having been doing the same. Is that bizarre?

I don’t think it will be though. I haven’t been inclined to read the statement and I do tend to notice Sussex stories. Anyone who isn’t interested in them isn’t going to bother reading past the headlines. As others have said there are more reliable places to get this information.

Plenty of people do since they pick apart the statement to the nth degree.

Everything Harry and Meghan say and do is widely shared. Most often by people who constantly criticise them

Is that what you’ve read on twitter?

People who were actually there had this to say:

Rhiannon Pithers, 25, an actuary who lives near to where Ms Everard was last seen, told the Telegraph: "We were just walking towards the bandstand and she was coming around the corner away from it.She looked a bit upset. She looked quite emotional. She was just on her own. About ten metres behind her there were 2 people following her. It wasn’t obvious she had security with her."
