With Love, Meghan - criticisms and genuine concern for her mental health

Lavenderfarmcottage · 05/01/2025 16:34

I am probably going to be flogged for posting this and chased down the dark laneways of Mumsnet as bystanders yell “Shame Shame Shame”.

I weighed in yesterday about a thread on Meghan and her new Netflix show. I made some criticisms about the trailer and certain cliche’s in the way it was produced. Hypocritical of me to be posting this but I feel guilty and have reflected. I am actually looking forward to watching it on Netflix and my criticisms were pretty minor and not exclusive to her show - it’s a common issue I have.

Meghan has struggled with mental health because of criticism. The reaction to ‘With Love… Meghan’ has been fairly brutal.

I think it would be really good if we refrained from saying anything negative about the series or Meghan Markle. That’s not the point of this thread.

I want to know if you think the criticisms have gone too far. The Princess of Wales is not on the scene and we are protective of her rightly so. That leaves Meghan as media fodder though.

Do you think it’s time Meghan and Harry were given a break ? I do. I think we’ve been far too harsh and the criticisms have gotten out of hand.

I think we also forget the cultural relevance. If we went into the homes or Gwyneth, Julia Roberts etc and I would probably feel the divide too. American culture doesn’t apologise for wealth and hollywoood is highly competitive.

Having a confident demeanour, throwing your head back Julia Roberts style when you laugh and unapologetically selling $$$ vagina products like Gwyneth Paltrow is how it over there. People talk loudly and confidently and are polished and rehearsed especially in the
Competitive world of Hollywood…

Are we all being too hard ?

Why's that, then?

Becsuse its not healthy to be to obsessed and filled with hate about someone you don't know and will never know.

Rich people can be unhappy too. Yes, the money means her troubles are going to be different from lying awake at night worrying about the cost of living – but honestly I’d rather be me in my semi stressing about our gas/electricity payments than Meghan in her mansion being eviscerated if she goes out, stays in, works, shows her kids, hides her kids, exists. I imagine it would be hell having people constantly, relentlessly: examine your pregnancies of years ago to “prove” your children don’t exist; call you a yacht girl and theorise you met your husband when you were a prostitute for his uncle; claim your wig stinks; call you names – it’s never Meghan, is it, it’s always Me-gain, Douchess, That Woman, Rachel, Roachel. And those are the printable ones.

@pelargoniums Unfortunately, I think the interviews and the book really turned the public against them. I'm in the US and I remember the reactions after the Oprah interview and after "Spare" was published. People didn't like it, and many celebrities started backing away from them.

"Hazmat"

Sorry but with that and your hyperbolic comment you just come across as unhinged.

Any time any celebrity is under discussion and someone uses an unflattering nickname, which are never half as clever as they think, I disregard their opinion. Like the “Tony Bliar” crowd. It makes the Meghan threads particularly hard to follow because the particularly unhinged crowd will tie themselves in knots not to say “Harry and Meghan”, so anyone normal has to run a constant mental Google Translate From Psycho to understand who the fuck Hazmat and Megain are.

But people aren't walking up to her in the street and saying to her face all these things which you've so helpfully listed, are they? She'd have to actively seek it out, which is a choice. Famous people train themselves not to read gossip sites or Google themselves. There's no reason Meghan can't do the same, is there?

And didn't she say that she never gets involved in all the 'noise' on social media and only reads 'The Economist'?

She could easily spend her days putting flowers in ice cubes in her mansion without giving a thought to what randoms on Twitter are saying about her.

Oh please…they’ve millions and could live a life of quiet luxury instead they attack the RF, betray confidences, make the final years of TLQ difficult plus encourage The Sussex Squad in their toxic attacking of all and sundry. They are living the life of celebrity, lecturing us about the environment, demanding huge expenses from Invictus, saying nothing about African Parks while producing terrible shows. You produce shows - they get reviews. If they can’t cope with that then live off the millions Harry inherited

Well said.
I had a postcard of their engagement photo framed on my mantle and watched the entire wedding with champagne in hand, wishing them very well. Got sucked into the whole charade.

But to throw away what they did with such incredible speed and spite, to cause so much distress to TLQ and to write such an utterly crass, nasty and undignified book ..... no thanks. Not interested in anything these indiscreet, money-grubbing tyros have to say or do.

Nor will anyone else want much to do with them. Who wants to be fodder for their next tell-all? My cousin in the US says that very few of her acquaintances even know who they are let alone have any interest; most Americans could hardly find London on a map or name King Charles if their lives depended on it. H&M clearly are C-listers at best in Hollywood and have been dubbed "grifters" by influential businesspeople.

It's breathtaking when you think about it. What they threw away with both hands. And aren't there enough home/cooking shows already out there? She couldn't think of anything more original?

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 05/01/2025 18:20

Frequency · 05/01/2025 18:16

How are people reviewing the series when it is not out yet? Have reviewers been given advanced access or are people reviewing the trailer/Meghan herself?

If it is the latter I do think that is a bit unfair, but they both seem to attract unfair press coverage.

I find it bizarre they get so much hate when they've not really done anything wrong. MM gets more column inches (and MN threads) criticizing her than Prince Andrew ever did.

Why do people insist in bringing Andrew into this? It's irrelevant! Plus there is no discussion to be had because pretty much everyone agrees that he's an arrogant fool, at best!

I don’t think they’ve done themselves any favours at all, and have been nasty and spiteful at times, but I don’t think she – or anyone – deserves some of the stuff thrown at her. I stumbled on a Reddit thread where they only call her Mattress; there’s the whole ”moonbump” conspiracy, comments on her physical appearance. (I’m quite glad to be genuinely shocked by the vitriol: I’ve been on the internet since it was beepy-boopy dial-up, thought I was numb to its evils.)

Brooklyn B is a major cut above Meghan. His cookery show may be pants but he is loyal to his family.and he's discreet and those are very worthy qualities to have.

The loyalty comment is fair.
Harry, questionable. I take it he felt pushed to tellbhis side.
Meghan's family? Dad and half sis? Trash.

You can literally have a discussion about anything under the sun, and it does not make you "obsessed and filled with hate"????!

He didn't feel "pushed" - he wanted the money. After she had dumped her father for capitalising on his royal connection, Harry sold out his.

Talk about double standards.

Unless one is incredibly dense, it’s obvious who “Hazmat” and “Megain” are - those are well known nicknames for the sell out duo.

I think your first post shows you are overinvested and should check in on your own MH.

Viviennemary · 05/01/2025 18:25

They have asked for criticism. Constantly seeking the limelight, money making schemes, writing books about members of the royal family. Telling embarrassing untruths eg the real wedding was the day before.

I can't help thinking if she stopped spending thousands on clothes they wouldn't need to tout themselves out so much, maybe even at all..

They’re not well-known to people who go outside occasionally.

Oh my Lord 😂I did indeed call Meghan a cunt, and I don't regret it for a second. I'm also not obsessed, nor do I hate her. I'd call my dog a cunt if he got on the wrong side of me, to be fair.
