With Love, Meghan - criticisms and genuine concern for her mental health

I am probably going to be flogged for posting this and chased down the dark laneways of Mumsnet as bystanders yell “Shame Shame Shame”.

I weighed in yesterday about a thread on Meghan and her new Netflix show. I made some criticisms about the trailer and certain cliche’s in the way it was produced. Hypocritical of me to be posting this but I feel guilty and have reflected. I am actually looking forward to watching it on Netflix and my criticisms were pretty minor and not exclusive to her show - it’s a common issue I have.

Meghan has struggled with mental health because of criticism. The reaction to ‘With Love… Meghan’ has been fairly brutal.

I think it would be really good if we refrained from saying anything negative about the series or Meghan Markle. That’s not the point of this thread.

I want to know if you think the criticisms have gone too far. The Princess of Wales is not on the scene and we are protective of her rightly so. That leaves Meghan as media fodder though.

Do you think it’s time Meghan and Harry were given a break ? I do. I think we’ve been far too harsh and the criticisms have gotten out of hand.

I think we also forget the cultural relevance. If we went into the homes or Gwyneth, Julia Roberts etc and I would probably feel the divide too. American culture doesn’t apologise for wealth and hollywoood is highly competitive.

Having a confident demeanour, throwing your head back Julia Roberts style when you laugh and unapologetically selling $$$ vagina products like Gwyneth Paltrow is how it over there. People talk loudly and confidently and are polished and rehearsed especially in the
Competitive world of Hollywood…

Oh please…they’ve millions and could live a life of quiet luxury instead they attack the RF, betray confidences, make the final years of TLQ difficult plus encourage The Sussex Squad in their toxic attacking of all and sundry. They are living the life of celebrity, lecturing us about the environment, demanding huge expenses from Invictus, saying nothing about African Parks while producing terrible shows. You produce shows - they get reviews. If they can’t cope with that then live off the millions Harry inherited

Rich people can be unhappy too. Yes, the money means her troubles are going to be different from lying awake at night worrying about the cost of living – but honestly I’d rather be me in my semi stressing about our gas/electricity payments than Meghan in her mansion being eviscerated if she goes out, stays in, works, shows her kids, hides her kids, exists. I imagine it would be hell having people constantly, relentlessly: examine your pregnancies of years ago to “prove” your children don’t exist; call you a yacht girl and theorise you met your husband when you were a prostitute for his uncle; claim your wig stinks; call you names – it’s never Meghan, is it, it’s always Me-gain, Douchess, That Woman, Rachel, Roachel. And those are the printable ones.

This is insane. It may be wise for you to invest in your mental health also.

Money and a house are material - does not bring happiness - You only have to look at 'X' anti-megan posts are always trending - don't get me wrong - i do not think she is a nice person - but she is disliked universally - again - how she copes with it - wish she would have a quiet life and stop trying her desperate projects

Agreed. I always assume that people who defend them would shaft their own grandparents without a second thought so thats why they don't really understand why everyone else finds that sort of behaviour hard to comprehend.

How are people reviewing the series when it is not out yet? Have reviewers been given advanced access or are people reviewing the trailer/Meghan herself?

If it is the latter I do think that is a bit unfair, but they both seem to attract unfair press coverage.

I find it bizarre they get so much hate when they've not really done anything wrong. MM gets more column inches (and MN threads) criticizing her than Prince Andrew ever did.

The problem for them both is that they do need to earn a (substantial) living, but they have no qualifications, or discernible skills beyond being famous.

I mean, Harry always seemed to take his job as a working royal seriously, and I'm sure he was good at that, and his work with Invictus is a real legacy. But realistically, people would want him on their project for his name, not for his project management skills.

I've never seen any of Megan's acting work, but it seems she held down one fairly substantial role, and she was OK at it? (I see her ridiculed because it was only one major role, and it wasn't exactly a big deal, but I've not seen people sticking the boot in because she was shit at it.)

So maybe her best bet is to land a smallish role, certainly not a scene-stealing, limelight-grabbing role, in a very good quality, slightly alternative series/movie, and build from there? People could criticise her acting, but they wouldn't be criticising her personally, which would make a big difference if it were me.

If she wants to build any sort of credibility, she can't go on capitalising on her fame by churning the equivalent of candyfloss (ie a lot of style, but literally no substance). Or rather, she can, but she has to accept that it will always leave her very open to personal criticism.

Well maybe if she didn't treat people like shit she would get better press.

You're seeking it out though by contributing to and reading threads about it then complaining it annoys the hell out of you.
If you're genuinely not interested in another celebrity cooking show, think it's all overkill and it's annoying you, why not disengage?
Can't fathom actively seeking stuff out to get annoyed by and say you're not interested when you clearly are.
