With Love, Meghan - criticisms and genuine concern for her mental health

Lavenderfarmcottage · 05/01/2025 16:34

I am probably going to be flogged for posting this and chased down the dark laneways of Mumsnet as bystanders yell “Shame Shame Shame”.

I weighed in yesterday about a thread on Meghan and her new Netflix show. I made some criticisms about the trailer and certain cliche’s in the way it was produced. Hypocritical of me to be posting this but I feel guilty and have reflected. I am actually looking forward to watching it on Netflix and my criticisms were pretty minor and not exclusive to her show - it’s a common issue I have.

Meghan has struggled with mental health because of criticism. The reaction to ‘With Love… Meghan’ has been fairly brutal.

I think it would be really good if we refrained from saying anything negative about the series or Meghan Markle. That’s not the point of this thread.

I want to know if you think the criticisms have gone too far. The Princess of Wales is not on the scene and we are protective of her rightly so. That leaves Meghan as media fodder though.

Do you think it’s time Meghan and Harry were given a break ? I do. I think we’ve been far too harsh and the criticisms have gotten out of hand.

I think we also forget the cultural relevance. If we went into the homes or Gwyneth, Julia Roberts etc and I would probably feel the divide too. American culture doesn’t apologise for wealth and hollywoood is highly competitive.

Having a confident demeanour, throwing your head back Julia Roberts style when you laugh and unapologetically selling $$$ vagina products like Gwyneth Paltrow is how it over there. People talk loudly and confidently and are polished and rehearsed especially in the
Competitive world of Hollywood…

Are we all being too hard ?

I don’t know if I’d be standing behind a white woman on a balcony, who does the same job as me and accepting that she gets way more perks, money and financial freedom. It wouldn’t work.

This is just the most bizarre point of view. Neither skin colour nor a personal sense of self worth have any relevance here.

Catherine is a future queen (consort). William and George are future kings. It was just absurd that Meghan considered herself as equivalent to Catherine. Harry clearly failed to set out the reality in his keenness to ensure this relationship didn't go the same way as those with Cressida or Chelsy.

Harry is equivalent to Princess Margaret. What profile do her children or grandchildren have these days? Harry's children would be wholly irrelevant in a few decades anyway, even if they were raised / living in the UK. That's not racism, just the reality of the line of succession.

Did she consider herself equivalent to Catherine? I doubt it, Meghan left as quickly as she could and who could blame her.

With the Prince Andrew rape scandal and William and Charles profiteering from tax payers, I think Meghan made the right decision.

Meanwhile 🤴 🥕 has to woo a Hollywood actress and break it to her that his palace is infact a 2 bedroom cottage.

My heart bleeds that she had to slum it at Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor Estate and also turned down a hideous country estate that Charles offered them, poor lamb, it must have been so hard for her.

You beat me to it. Hardly a two up and two down terrace ex-miners house up the valleys is it!

Ontobetterthings · 05/01/2025 17:19

I agree. I'm no fan of hers but she has been trolled constantly by the media. Time to give it a rest.

If you misappropriate minority culture expect to be pulled up in it.

All I’ll say is that I think England needs to give her a break. I think it’s time to just have an open mind.

Imagine being Harry and your brother has millions and millions and owns the sea and ambulance 🚑 sheds or whatever they.

Meanwhile 🤴 🥕 has to woo a Hollywood actress and break it to her that his palace is infact a 2 bedroom cottage.

If I were already a self made millionaire actress I’d be out, if I’m being honest.

I don’t know if I’d be standing behind a white woman on a balcony, who does the same job as me and accepting that she gets way more perks, money and financial freedom. It wouldn’t work.

Standing behind a white woman?????? What on earth has Kate’s skin colour got to do with anything ???

MumChp · 05/01/2025 17:20

No. Meghan and Harry are making themselves media fodder!

They can afford a life of luxury. They can retire to a quiet and comfortable life with their two children. They don't have to work a single day in their lives. They can do what ever they like.

They don't choose to. They seek out the media constantly.
I don't feel sorry for them.

Will and Cate (or at least Will) also lived in nott cott, which H and M never acknowledged in their complaints. They would have had plenty of money if they stayed in the family. Many others in the rf don't seem to mind standing behind senior royals. She knew what she was signing up for (or should have) when she joined. Reports say she didn't want to listen to anyone who tried to warn her. Anyway, they were giving a nice home and a very large staff, which is more than other royals usually get who aren't immediate heirs.

It's very easy not to criticise Meghan, worry about Meghan or give any head space at all to Meghan.

This.

This is probably one of the most pompous statements I have ever read on social media 😁

And quit with the race baiting crap, that’s exactly how monarchies work all over the world, you marry the spare you get the spare life, standing behind a white woman, honestly what drivel.

Oh come on. You know, presumably, that William and Kate also used to live in Nottingham Cottage after they were married. Only in time did they move on to bigger homes.

And the same would have been (and was) for H&M. They were offered a large apartment in Kensington Palace (similar to W&K) and they turned it down. Frogmore Cottage (also a sizeable house comprised of several smaller cottages knocked together) was their choice.

Harry had inherited multiple millions from his mother and from the QM. He was also given an allowance by his father of approximately £2m a year to live on, along with having minimal day to day living or housing expenses, and a pretty cushty lifestyle overall.

Yes of course he would never inherit the vast wealth his older brother would, but he was hardly on the breadline - his lifestyle was extremely privileged, and far beyond the reaches that MM would have been able to achieve on her own. However, royal life lacked the Hollywood razzmatazz that Meghan was used to, and between his bitterness and resentment over being behind his brother in status, and her desire to live a Hollywood billionaire lifestyle, they pressed detonate and took themselves off.

MangshorJhol · 05/01/2025 17:17

@Choccyscofffy Except she's not on IG doing DIY- she has been giving a Netflix cooking show that she's fronting solo despite no credentials in that regard. Like I said, Samin Nosrat who wrote and made the excellent Salt Fat Acid Heat, only got 1 season. A second season of her excellent show would be better than a former actress socialite teaching people how to host. But maybe I am in a minority?

Netflix aren’t stupid, they know what pulls in viewers.

I haven’t seen SFAH, will look out for it. There’s room for multiple cooking shows.

RockingLock · 05/01/2025 17:22

Every time i read one of these threads i can’t help but think about the amount of people on MN who have directly met H&M and been screwed over by them, so determined they are that they are X or Y, and forgetting they have no idea what the truth is from either side. The media at its best.

let’s not forget the bollocks we were fed during covid by the same outlets eh.

the strong feelings about something and someone you don’t even know and doesn’t directly affect you just amazes me.

couldn’t give a fuck.

I may watch the show, I may not. I may enjoy it, I may not. My opinion on H&M? Neutral, BECAUSE I DONT KNOW THEM AND NOTHING THEY DO AFFECTS ME OR MY FAMILY.

They are fun to watch though. Surely as you've commented on this thread you must secretly be fascinated. You just haven't admitted it to yourself.

RockingLock · 05/01/2025 17:28

@Nordione1 its a trending post. I was intrigued by the title. I read the first page, and once again complete strangers with such strong opinions of people they don’t know, have never met. How can you like or dislike someone you don’t know? Bizarre.

and someone reads it and it feeds their views, and so on. Its literal poison.

what is there to be fascinated by? I’m personally interested in home decor, cooking and baking. I liked MM in suits. I may check it out, however I have plenty of cooking shows left to watch on Netflix, so I may not.

Sasskitty · 05/01/2025 17:28

When I first read your thread title, I imagined it was about her having a pre-existing mhc. As opposed to criticism from people causing her mental health to suffer.

I actually think that both M and H have pre-existing mental health conditions. The way they behave has shown us they’re unhinged with no awareness of anyone or anything but themselves.

I’d say they both have Narcissistic Personality Disorder, at the very least. Of course they both have issues from their damaged childhoods. It’s a big mess to unpack and together the whole is worse than the parts.

But what can they do .. Wait until we see the impact on their children. Growing up with 2 painfully self obsessed self perceived victim bonded parents. Hey ho. The cash will soften any blows, for all concerned.

Jewell25 · 05/01/2025 17:29

She deserves everything she gets. Did she show any concern for the mental health of the late Queen, Prince Philip, William, Kate? She’s a total hypocrite.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 05/01/2025 17:29

Lavenderfarmcottage · 05/01/2025 16:40

Though she gets more criticism than most actresses or celebrities and it’s usually very personal.

Utter nonsense.

You put yourself in the public eye, you take the consequences.

FatFiatMultiplaWhopper · 05/01/2025 17:30

She's chosen to make a tv show. People are allowed to criticise it. I'm struggling to be sympathetic.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 05/01/2025 17:32

Lavenderfarmcottage · 05/01/2025 16:46

I don’t think I’d want to be out of the spotlight in her shoes or his. Meghan took enormous risks choosing Hollywood over a safe life path. She eventually found fame and built a fairly solid career. She gave that up for a family that expected her to be a supporting act for very little pay or benefit in the context of a) their wealth and b) her capacity to earn otherwise.
Why would she want to give up on a career and her previous dreams given up for the 🤴

Harry has never had anonymity and could never have a normal life. He was never going to retire in Nantucket and catch clams off a boat or get a job at Walmart. They needed something to do with their lives and its fairly impossible to ever hide.

"For very little pay"?????!!!!

Does that apply to Catherine?
