Where are the racist headlines?

You don't understand why it's racist to criticise things that a non white woman does but not to criticise the white woman for the very same thing?

I recommend you read Why I No Longer Talk to White People About Race.

By having an afternoon tea??

I love Middle Eastern food, doesn't mean I'm going to go and live in Saudi or Iran.

I'm agnostic about Meghan, unlikely to watch the show as it looks overly stylised and, despite being British, I think afternoon tea is boring as fuck. But really odd to criticise her for that.

Your post makes no sense

MakeYourOwnMusicStartYourOwnDance · 03/01/2025 01:48

I don't think she has anything to worry about there, she gets so much engagement just from one post of running onto the beach for example.
Glad she's keeping comments off, why invite any attacks in?! Does right imo.

Why does she employ bots, then?

Vespanest · 03/01/2025 10:45

You cannot compare headline between Catherine and Meghan written in the same time as they were in different royal status. Comparing their treatment of being in the royal family attention in their first 12 months I'd argue that Catherine was the one treated more aggressively by the media. By the time Meghan arrived Catherine was part of the furniture.

Where are the ‘many racist headlines’ you were talking about?

You havent listed them

Of course you can compare it. Why was it OK for Catherine to wear a one shouldered dress and not Meghan?

Serenster · 03/01/2025 10:49

GoneGirl12345 · 03/01/2025 10:28

Criticism for eating avocados
Wearing one shouldered dress
Cradling her bump
Wearing nail varnish

All of these were things that Kate did (not sure if she eats avocados tbf) but only the non white woman was criticised for it.

The bump cradling one annoys me. Are you telling me that there was absolutely no difference in the way that Meghan and Kate dealt with their baby bumps when out in public that may have led to different headlines?

Can you show me a photo of Kate posing like this for example instead of interacting with the person next to her, who by the way was being honoured at the event, and to whom Meghan had just presented an award?

Because there aren’t many racist headlines, thats why you can’t come up with any…..

I agree that was a weird way to stand when presenting an award. But the fact is they were treated differently and that's exactly what micro aggressions are.

Anyone who knows me in real life will find it hysterical that I'm "defending" Meghan, but there were inequities in how they were treated. Doesn't mean MM is a saint. Many things can be true at once.

Well, how does anyone get to be a TV personality other than being famous for something, then being on TV? There's loads of people making a decent living as "personalities" from Love Island beginnings!

She has a background in TV. She's beautiful and she presents well to camera. I'm not sure what more qualifications someone needs for a lifestyle programme. I mean, it's vacuous nonsense, but no more so than most TV drivel.

What successful TV show do you think this is similar to?

There are lots of cooking shows, but they feature people like Nigella or Jaime who have a background in cooking. What exactly are 'lifestyle' shows? Could you name a few for me? Genuine questions.

Samcro · 03/01/2025 11:00

omg have we really gone back to how she cradled her bump...
its bizarre how upset people still seem to be about this.
may be she should have hidden it under maternity wear of the 90's. how dare she be happy and proud of it.

BBC player has a categories for shows and one is lifestyle which includes shows like great British sewing bee, country file, antiques roadshow, homes under the hammer, escape to the country etc.

Kate has also had various headlines over the years for breaking Royal protocol by the way (they are all rubbish - there is no “royal protocol” here or Princess Margaret would have been in constant trouble as she wore coloured nail polish, open-toed shoes and off the shoulder necklines her whole life. She smoked in public too, shock, horror). It’s literally just engagement farming by the publications - people are more likely to read an article that suggests there’s an actual story here. And when Meghan was the new subject to write about that would guarantee engagement, everything she did was covered in this way.

Kate used to get it all the time for her hemlines from 2011-2015 or so - curiously not something that was aimed at Meghan despite her also wearing some pretty short skirts?

https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/style/1682280/kate-middleton-broke-royal-protocol-short-skirt-weights-tip-fashion-hack

There’s even criticism about coloured nail polish here:

https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/style/1756357/Kate-Middleton-blue-coat-dress-Easter-Sunday-pictures

Queen was 'fed up' with Kate breaking royal protocol

There are many rules members of the Royal Family must follow when it comes to fashion, including that skirt and dress hemlines must be below the knee, according to reports. However, Kate, the Princess of Wales, has broken this regulation many a time, e...

Serenster · 03/01/2025 11:04

So, were any criticisms of Kate for “breaking royal protocol” before Harry met Meghan also micro-aggressions? Genuinely curious how you’d describe those.

Tinfoil hat territory but some execs at Netflix probably did this to ensure it would fail and they have a perfect reason not to renew their contract in 2025. This type of lifestyle fluff with locations and people that are readily available in LA is the cheapest content to film and produce. They sent off the most basic production team to cobble together a short lifestyle series. Again, this is the stuff that any reasonably established Youtuber can pull off with tiny team and budget. It doesn't require Netflix money in the same way that a big box production with casting and special effects does. So Netflix threw them a final dog biscuit in the form of reality TV style show that they can put together cheaply. It was deliberately set for release mid-January which is the dead zone for entertainment and advertising CPMs (and they knew it would be overshadowed by Squid Game anyway). The first episode might pull in some viewers but the ensuing ones will be catastrophic. So Netflix has perfect proof on paper that they cannot renew their contract and not get sued by H&M.

To be fair, Meghan is not in control of ever step of the process. They probably pitched the idea to her as an accompaniment for ARO, and it would have made perfect sense for it to launch back in early summer when the brand was announced. For whatever reason there were clearly unforeseen delays and I've certain they were fuming at this and had no control over it. The decision to launch in Jan without any fanfare is almost certainly a bit of sabotage from the studio's side. They don't expect the series to do well but they're putting it on air because they have no choice. It's the equivalent of a straight to DVD movie.

One mustn't forget that Netflix originally offered them the deal in hopes of a Kardashians style show involving the Royal Family, hence half in and half out deal. When that didn't happen immediately, maybe they held out hopes that there could still be a reconciliation. Over the course of 2024 it was clear to them, with Kate and Charle's cancer diagnosis, that there is no chance whatsoever that Netflix would get to film anything around the RF. Thus any residual hopes are gone and they have every reason to drop H&M.

None of those are in any way comparable to a shown featuring highly contrived, stylised shots of someone pretending to cook for her 'friends' in a rented house.

Thedom · 03/01/2025 11:10

Wasn't the show produced by Sony TV though and not Netflix ?

Unbelievable, 🙄 old comments about extremely weird bump cradling is now used as an example of racism and/or microaggression!!

Spectre8 · 03/01/2025 11:14

I must be missing something about all these comments on netflix not marketing it therefore they see it as a flop.

As someone who does have netflix I don't even remember seeing much advertisement for squid games and even for the new series that was just released, barely saw any mention in the run up to its release. Then again maybe I'm not someone who uses X or tiktok and rarely on youtuvr so must miss any advetising. Most i have instagram and facebook but i dont really scroll through those either.

I find out about their new releases when I log in and it's on the whats new section or at the top of the screen but those are always changing.

Xag · 03/01/2025 11:17

Of course the whole thing might be different but success is still going to be predicated on how Meghan comes across and if people like her, because that's the nature of this sort of programme

I think this is an important point. People might watch a bit because they want to see, not just what the show is like, but how she comes across. And if it's not likeable, then they'll switch off.

I would find it hard to take that sort of gamble on whether people will like me. I'd see it as placing myself in a very exposed position. But perhaps a professional actor can separate out performance from self rather better than I would; though surely it must blur when playing yourself.

I have two kids and never have I struck that bump hugging pose. No matter who does that it seems very strange.

I’m not on Instagram but people are saying it’s not good for an ‘influencer’ to turn their comments off. I guess time will tell.

Aspargar · 03/01/2025 10:10

Not only have we all over consumed cooking shows the last 25 years, but the world is changing.

Many get their recipes from SM and new formats like the Waitrose podcast are getting people interested.

This over stylised format seems old fashioned. Particularly because it’s not in her own home, so it’s literally staged. Will always feel fake.

Everything today is supposed to be about authenticity…but when you hear at the end of the video that with the dog snoring, ‘it’s going to be a peaceful day’ …you just think too right it will, you don’t have two kids running about at home because your filming in someone else’s family home!

Edited

I agree with that.

The 'stand and stir' cookery genre might still exist with big names like Nigella or Jaime, but even they have to put a bit of a 'spin' on things to get viewers.

These days, if people want a recipe they'll head to the internet and get multiple versions of what they're looking for within minutes. Why sit through a whole show on the off chance they might cook something you like? Yes, some are interested in the whole procedure, looking at the interiors and so on, but there has to be at least some attempt at 'relatablity' and 'authenticity'. That doesn't seem to be the case here.

Why would they need a reason?

Once any business contract comes to an end both parties are free agents and neither needs to give any justification for non renewal.

Indeed, but sometimes businesses will also adopt a “cover your ass” approach to ensure they’ve done everything possible to avoid being sued when a relationship breaks down. Particularly if your counterparty is known to be litigious.

Why do people hate watch/follow Meghan? I don’t even have a clue what she’s up to, but yet somehow those who profess not to like her, know that she’s opened an instagram account? Also, what does “ARO” mean here? I thought it meant aromantic, but it doesn’t seem to fit the context here.

You’ve just said you don’t have a clue what she’s up to but you know she’s opened an instagram account. Not having a go, just highlighting that people who also dont have a clue still get exposed to bits of info.
