Boring and plain, but then I think all Christmas cards like this are. No need for them really

CurlewKate · 19/12/2024 17:42

@PrettyFlyforaMaiTai honestly it isn''t. It's a clip from a closely curated professionally made video.

My favorite Christmas card is still that amazing Ralph Lauren advert from Charles and Di!!

CurlewKate · 19/12/2024 17:44

@SirChenjins "See they've avoided the 'from the office of...'

To be fair, that's probably because it's a personal card, not a corporate one.

DappledThings · 19/12/2024 17:26

I think that poster meant why not a nice generic one. Not them in the snow, just a standard snowy scene. Or a robin in the snow etc. One that isn't the narcissistic photo of themselves for once that all the royals and othe public figures insist on.

Ahh I understand. However, they would probably be criticised for thinking the plebs weren’t worth a private photo, just a generic card. Or worse it would lead to another “where’s Kate” debacle. I honestly think they are damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

I would love a more Christmassy photo but I just don’t know how they would navigate it in a way that wasn’t tacky or highlighted their privilege whilst still being personable.

The card is exactly what they are boring and plain.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 19/12/2024 17:59

Objectively speaking, these photos are lovely and Christmassy. I think they’re gorgeous. But imagine the backlash William
and co would recieve if they used such a photo. They’d be accused of flaunting their wealth and privilege, showing off priceless pieces of artwork in their palaces and manors whilst their subjects have to resort to food banks.

I think it’s safer for them to use a nice neutral family photo in nature.

The best 'public figure' Christmas card is Tony Blair about to start a pub fight. Nothing can top that. Makes me laugh every time I see it.

“Don’t Tony, he’s not worth it!” 🤣

And she's wearing Christmassy red. It's perfect.

Patienceinshortsupply · 19/12/2024 18:12

I think it's a beautiful image of a young family fighting their way together through the grenade that cancer threw into their lives.

I bet you're exciting and gorgeous. What a mean comment.

I think it's fine. It's not controversial in any way. Just seems to be a tradition to send a photo of the family.

I reckon you'd have to be pretty hateful as a person to criticise it.

Let's all guess what your card should be then...

WalterdelaMare · 19/12/2024 18:22

It’s a nice pic. I wonder if they’ll stop doing them, like the vast majority of us proles? 😂

CurlewKate · 19/12/2024 18:27

@MrsLeonFarrell I'd forgotten the wonderful Blair one! Still think Diana playing ponies is funnier.....

losingweightandgainingconfidence · 19/12/2024 18:29

Fwiw I don't like the H&M one either but at least that one is a classic corporate card, this one feels a bit last minute- "oh, we've forgotten to take a photo". I know the cards were probably designed long before Christmas, so a picture from last year's carol concert could have been nice

Have you got a copy of that? I don't think I remember it and I love an accidentally funny card.

ToomanyMilesAway · 19/12/2024 18:34

I think it shows a great deal of love and affection and isn't that the best thing we can ask for in this life?

anxioussister · 19/12/2024 18:36

MaryJosephandCherylnotJesus · 19/12/2024 15:55

Oooh, I love this. Understated yet lovely, they look like any other happy family. I hope they have a lovely Christmas and can relax (as much as a family in their position can) after the year they've had.

(I dare say the anti-Royal brigade will be on here in a minute, though, asking why we even care/saying the monarchy should be abolished blah blah blah)

I’m not anti monarchy per se (although I would prefer a much much more streamlined circus) but I don’t think that the Wales understand public life like previous working royals did. They do the absolutely bare minimum + never look like they want to be there. There are a million other lives where they don’t have to be in the public eye - but they claim to have opted in. I don’t think they really have. I don’t dislike them, I’m not hugely invested in them - l’m just not very impressed!

Nothatgingerpirate · 19/12/2024 18:39

What is it about the partridge in a pear tree, is it where they prefer to sit?

I'll keep looking-it wasn't where I thought it was. But I've just found an amazing Pinterest page with some fabulous "for heavens sake try to look normal!" royal Christmas cards- I'll try and post a few later.

I think they have stopped in a certain sense that they didn't get together and have a new photo taken.

EdithWeston · 19/12/2024 19:37

They'll still be sending oodles of cards - to the key people icw all their patronages and appointments; all their staff; other random bits of officialdom; foreign royals (at behest of FCDO, as soft diplomacy); everyone they've met this year etc

Yes Minister had an episode where Jim Hacker was faced with the official and semi-official Christmas card list, plus which staff could help with what.

wordler · 19/12/2024 19:38

Did you mean this one?

If so, that's a very naughty card, because that looks as if it was around the time of Diana's affair with her riding instructor

bohnerific69 · 19/12/2024 20:13

It is abit boring. It'd be nice if it was at least taken during the colder seasons, not summer. Nothing about it says "this is a Christmas card".
