The Archewell Foundation hosted a dinner for the Southern California Welcome Project with their partner organization, Mina’s List. Mina’s List spent the past year building community and a safe space for women who have resettled in the U.S. from Afghanistan.

The organisation has helped evacuate and resettle more than 2,000 women leaders through independent and coalition efforts. They applied to become part of the Welcome Project after hearing about Archewell's efforts. "It was the opportunity of a lifetime to be able to partner in that way,"

@BustingBaoBun

"Don't you dare criticise what I wore. You know nothing about me or my connection to these wonderful Muslim women many of whom I know well. I was holding the event actually and we discussed outfits. So just back off"

Here you go again telling people what they can say or not 🤷‍♀️

What? I was coming back at someone criticising me for what I wore to a function I held. I think I have a right to do that. I was the one there! You may feel different. That would be weird, but up to you

@isitsnowingyett seems to be a bit off with me, no idea why. Up to them!

Women on Mumsnet policing what other women wear.

Jesus.

MangshorJhol · 24/11/2024 08:20

To be honest as a South Asian woman I am less fussed about her outfit. In our part of the world Muslims wear everything- from crop tops to niqabs (Afghanistan under the Taliban is different but that’s a matter of coercion).

My sartorial criticism is that actually she could have worn something more colourful! But there is no doubt she’s a beautiful woman.

Much more interested in why the visit is about Meghan and not Mina’s List, the lack of any links to them, or to this ‘Welcome Project’ and the fact that one of the previous Welcome Partners in Texas doesn’t even mention them as a donor or a supporter.

So how does Welcome Project ‘support’ Mina’s List? By having Meghan show up (the meal was hosted by someone else) and assuming that the publicity they bring is enough? Or do they offer financial support, advocacy on their behalf? Curious.

But the die-hards will accuse me of hate. But I am curious why most of the focus is on Meghan not the project.

MangshorJhol · 24/11/2024 08:30

My bigger point is about Archewell which seems to be a vessel for narcissism rather than true charity. Which brings me to my even larger point which I made in a different thread about where Harry AND Meghan go from here. This kind of itty bitty work is not meaningful in the grand scheme (think of the Clinton or Gates Foundation- this is not in that league). Their lifestyle business has stalled. And Harry’s two current projects both originated in his pre Meghan days- Invictus and Sentebale.

So maybe this is their way forward- he has the older global projects, she has these more local low effort ventures (random hair launch, these low key events). They can’t use the RF any more- it would look tawdry. And the Kate cancer announcement suggested that they have been totally iced out.

But it is 100% a big big compromise from Jan 2020 when their statement suggested they were up for doing Commonwealth tours and collaborating with HM as they carved out a brand new path. This brand new path is clearly a fraction of where they were going- and it has been a while.

As an American I am not remotely a monarchist but as an institution it has access that Harry and Meghan have lost. One day William will be hosting state dinners and meeting heads of state as the head of state unless there are serious constitutional changes. It would also be curious to see what happens in 7-8 years once George is 18 and in a decade when Charlotte is also 18.

Why do her clothes always look so crumpled? Nothing is ever ironed or properly fitted. It's bizarre.

Perhaps she doesn’t know how to iron …

OneTealSloth · 24/11/2024 09:16

Oh my what’s going on here

Meghan makes anything and everything about Meghan - she's a glory hoover, grifting off of anyone else's hard work

I was just about to say she still can't work an iron, then.

Why do you seem shocked? Get yourself over to Style and Beauty and knock yourself out reading about how 'frumpy' most women are, except those posting.

Sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one, @MangshorJhol, especially when Meghan has so much history for making "causes" about herself rather than them

So how does Welcome Project ‘support’ Mina’s List? By having Meghan show up (the meal was hosted by someone else) and assuming that the publicity they bring is enough? Or do they offer financial support, advocacy on their behalf

We haven't been told, but it's very noticeable that so many "partnerships" are claimed without further detail around what's involved. Is there real support, or is it a case of hijacking others' efforts to get a share of the credit?
Who can say?

MangshorJhol · 24/11/2024 11:37

@Puzzledandpissedoff As an American I totally recognise this modus operandi. Except that normally this is your lower rung celebrity who would try to gain a little traction/publicity or somebody trying to resurrect their image or somebody making a ‘comeback.’ For people who had the star power they did for a while this is all a trifle sad.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/11/2024 11:49

Normally this is your lower rung celebrity who would try to gain a little traction/publicity or somebody trying to resurrect their image or somebody making a ‘comeback.’

Exactly, @MangshorJhol, but then you said it yourself in that the star power's something they had (past tense) rather than having it now
Basically they've blown it, so unless they can find some real gravitas from somewhere their failure will continue - and in the US failure isn't admired

There's a further point that the truly great tend to have a certain mindset to back up that star power - a real inner strength that can carry them over occasional glitches - and since neither of these two have it they just end up looking like silly spiteful children in pursuit of god knows what

RosieLeaf · 24/11/2024 14:45

It’s done though, the days of her attending an event making headline news are over. She’s z-list and as this thread has shown; people just think she’s doing it for publicity for herself.

I think she’ll ditch him soon to try to cut her losses, but he’s not the issue.

Lifestooshort71 · 24/11/2024 15:53

I for one googled Mina's List as a result of this thread and was interested to see that they are active in Nigeria - I wonder whether something she heard or saw there sparked Meghan's interest in the group or whether she was already involved. Anyway, some very well-qualified and experienced women on their team, it's an impressive read.

TallerSally · 23/11/2024 21:29

I know, right!?!?

It's just so funny. In 10 years from now they'll still be nattering away and gnashing their teeth at Meghan (if they have any teeth left by then, of course...)

😂

Of course.

Just like we were nattering away about the Royal Family 10 years ago, and 20, and 30 and 40 (look at how many posters here have the minutiae of the 1980s at their fingertips).

Which members get talked about, and in what terms, rather depends on what they're actually doing at the time

EdithWeston · 24/11/2024 16:36

BTW - can anyone link the version of The Welcome Project that MM/Archewell is involved with? There are several similarly named organisations, and the Aechewell website itself says there are 11, mentions Texas, but doesn't actually say what Archewell is doing

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/11/2024 16:54

I'm having trouble seeing the wood for the trees myself, @EdithWeston, but there's this on the Archwell site: https://archewell.org/program/the-welcome-project/

As many have mentioned there's no link to this "partner" organisation and I'm now wondering whether it's actually an "initiative" born of Archewell itself

In which case there's every possibility that, after the initial fanfare/publicity we'll quickly hear no more about it

Maybe Archewell helped set up one of the locations? it's not clear at all if its a different stand alone location, but certainly , in that article, Meghan seems to be claiming some ownership for the charity.

Tealeavesinthecup · 25/11/2024 15:24

As usual everything with them is as clear as mud!!

They claim "ownership" of a lot of things, dogwal, but often for only as long as the photo ops and headlines last

Even the Parents Network tab on Archwell has no updated info at all, and certainly nothing about professional support for a subject so serious

On a purely human level I wish they could find something they're able to do well, but realistically their only value now is the entertainment of seeing what they'll do next

Because she drives to places. Most fabrics crumple when you sit down in them.
