I've never met any of them, so any comment would be pure speculation.

What I noticed were her shoes were too big and they were filthy ! So much for her freakish attention to detail !

BigWillyLittleTodger · 04/09/2024 16:54

When I first saw her standing like that at the engagement announcement was when my first doubts about her crept in, it’s a very showy look at me type of pose, more beauty pageant than major British Royalty, all she needed was the sash and crown to complete the look.

I was the exact same, as soon as I saw the photo I could see it wouldn’t work.

The royals only get to stay where they are and are one of the few European royal families left, because in part, in public they must look as humble as they can, try not to look like they are enjoying the attention. Otherwise, it’s orf with their heads!

She looks like she’s straight off the set from her gameshow days. It was always going to end in disaster

It’s odd but her shoes often look too big 🤷‍♀️

She wears them one or two sizes too big on purpose; there are lots of articles about this. It's because she's had surgery on one foot, and because apparently it helps avoid blisters (though I don't quite see that myself because I would have though there was greater potential for the foot moving and therefore chafing, but apparently it's a common tactic and you use the extra space at the front to pad the toes)

If I had hard-to-fit feet, had made millions myself and was also married to a multimillionaire, I'd just have shoes made to measure, rather than gappy off-the-rack ones

Thats such a contorted posture, what was the idea of that pose?

It's interesting, that twist in the torso.

Looking closer it actually seems as if the left foot is not fully on the ground, as if she's in mid twirl.

Have to say, I had second hand embarrassment watching it. It's all a bit Marilyn Monroe hanging off a millionaire, iyswim.

It's actually not ludicrous. Prior to World War 2, the Daily Mail was actively supporting Hitler and the Facist movement. Its was considered a propaganda outlet that was fed information from Goebbels. So it does in fact have deep historical roots.

https://pressgazette.co.uk/publishers/nationals/hitler-the-daily-mail-and-how-lord-rothermere-showed-he-has-learned-the-lessons-of-history/

It is ludicrous.
Prior to WW2 means nothing.
Harry and Meghan are happy to give information to them as well as other titles, according to their former Head of Global Communications.

CarmelaBrunella · 04/09/2024 17:36

Also, "prior to WW2" is some 80 years ago, and things move on.
I'm no supporter of the DM, nor it's editorial stance, but this lazy association with the Nazis, because it was the case during the 1930s is meaningless in the context of the present day media.

It's funny, that pose always reminded of a picture/film still from somewhere.
I've just had a look (sitting here with a conditioning treatment on my hair, don't want to drip everywhere, so time to kill) and I can't find what I was after.
This is the closest I can find but it's not the one. The right one includes the body arching.
But I guess this one is appropriate and possibly was mistaken for a documentary.

She’s just missing the heel kick and a briefcase in hand

She actually did the heel kick at one point in that photo shoot.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 04/09/2024 18:02

It’s the beauty pageant pose!

She must have taken to heart the title of Marilyn’s film How to Marry a Millionaire!

Maybe Reitmans will take her back.

Shame she didn’t just stick with this kind of thing, it suits her better than all this pretending to be a philanthropist/humanitarian/ perpetual victim. She looked better there as well and more real (as in not pretending she cares about others more than herself). Here, she’s a confident woman who loves herself (nothing really wrong with that particularly) but it’s more real than the Meghan we see today.

I just think she would have been a damn sight better off getting with a rich, very confident American than the sap she got.

GorgeousTulips · 04/09/2024 18:29

Obviously she couldn’t get the rich confident American. She tried! So she settled for the sap with a title.

Uricon2 · 04/09/2024 18:56

Others have put it better, but the Daily Heil trope really goes back to an infamous headline "Hurrah for the Blackshirts!" (I know) in support of Oswald Mosley. They weren't alone in this and the attitude to Hitler was very, very ambivalent for a long time. It was a strange and awful time, followed by a worse one, getting on for a century ago.

The Wail (as I prefer to call it) is very far from perfect and I am not really their target audience, well, I am on paper but not in reality, as a life long Leftie of socialist bent. However, if you want lots and lots of great pics of major events, it's the go to.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 04/09/2024 18:58

I agree @BunnyLake it actually feels authentic because what she is displaying in that advertisement is the real her (apart from I’m sure she would rather be advertising Dior than Reitmans) and yes she looks so much better there than she does today, her figure looked fantastic, she just looks frail now which has aged her terribly.

Uricon2 · 04/09/2024 19:05

I hadn't seen those Reitmans ads. She looks fantastic and even though acting, there's a confidence that seems to have been distorted now.

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 04/09/2024 19:23

I always wonder why she didn't do this - even if it was only one or two neutral pairs that went with everything - would surely look better and be better for the feet.

It's really weird it looks like she's about to throw her left leg over Harry's shoulder, Strictly-style

I remember watching that and thinking why on earth is she standing like that? Her clothes and her stance were all wrong. She didn’t look like she understood the situation fully. It was such a contrast to the usual engagement photos for the Royals. The engagement interview made me feel uneasy too. She completely dominated Harry and made it all about herself.

I believe her somewhat tacky break from past norms is all part of the reason behind Scobie's mission to paint Catherine as the stiff, conformist Stepford Wife. It's a retrospective re-shaping of history to make Meghan blameless for all her behaviour within the RF.

diddl · 04/09/2024 20:24

I'm guessing she was quite well known where those ads were shown?

Pineapplesandthegovernmentandpunkrock · 04/09/2024 21:16

@diddl Reitmans is a Canadian brand. She lived/worked in Toronto during Suits. I'm still not sure that she was that well known, though. If you get a chance to read Tom Bower's account of what happened with the Reitmans campaign, MM pretty much rewrote the original brief to her liking, and possibly for the purposes of aggrandising the perception of her popularity.
