Harry in UK for funeral

DM is reporting Harry came to the UK for the funeral of his uncle Robert Fellowes. The husband of Diana's sister Lady Jane. Apparently they kept their distance from each other and didn't speak. Looks like William has the Windsor habit of bearing grudges. Don't blame him in this case.

Hi everyone, can we please get this thread back on track.
Best wishes,
MNHQ

Hughs · 02/09/2024 15:31

She did say it though 😉

Does anyone else find it ever so entertaining that as soon as these debates get anywhere near analysis of the whys and wherefores, the derailing starts?

But racism.
But the cats mother was worse.
But you said on another thread.

JADS · 02/09/2024 15:41

Back to the thread, can anyone confirm that Harry originally said he wasn't coming for the funeral? I swear it was reported in the American press.

It does seem that RAVEC had enough time to do their job, so clearly his bespoke plan is working. Maybe Harry is starting to see the light.

Pineapplesandthegovernmentandpunkrock · 02/09/2024 15:44

@JADS Their spokespeople at People magazine were most surprised (and a little affronted) that he attended, they said it had been their understanding he would not. I really think he snuck out. Is there any evidence he's flown home?

Strictly speaking the funeral was held a month ago and the event Harry came back for was a memorial service. I don't think this was made very clear in the press articles. I didn't realise this either at first.

It's always disappointing to swan out with a big flounce, and then find out your family (instead of trying to placate you) just get on with their lives!

I wonder if the demands/ flounces have been his usual approach to getting what he wants, and when it came to smaller issues his family indulged him. But he came up with something that would have been damaging to the monarchy, so they finally had to say 'no'

I suppose that makes sense when family and friends are spread out internationally - the funeral takes place reasonably quickly, then the memorial later to give people time to travel.

This makes a lot of sense. Agree that the newspaper article doesn't make that clear.

I did wonder if Harry saw the reaction to the People release and have a change of heart. I wonder if he was actually hoping to sneak in and out unannounced so as to not undermine his court case?

Also the funeral can be a small private affair and if the memorial service ends up being a big ho-ha it's less of an issue.

Well he's either still here or he's done a pretty good job of not being spotted either arriving or departing! I guess he couldn't monetise this visit.

Some people would argue that a black crow is white.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 02/09/2024 17:06

I think their trips to Nigeria and Colombia have blown Harry's case out of the water. Surely no-one could seriously argue that the UK is less safe than either of those countries.

You're not alone, Viviennemary; I didn't initially realise it either, but to the wretched media it would hardly have mattered if it was a barn dance. All they're interested in is "William and Harry were in the same room!!", and even then it's only because someone was stupid enough to speak out

FWIW I neither know nor care if Harry's still in the UK - for all I know he might be thrashing out a return with Charles and William even as we type - but doubtless we'll hear all about it when the time comes for his next blab, and doubtless everything will continue to be everyone else's fault

DelectableMe · 02/09/2024 17:17

It'll all come out in some interview or book or whatever. Harry won't resist the opportunity to make $$$$.

smilesy · 02/09/2024 20:24

I’m really curious as to how this is going to
play out with regard to his case against RAVEC. Will this not completely undermine his claim that the arrangements made for his are inadequate? I wonder if he gave notice that he was attending? If he didn’t, then he clearly doesn’t need the level of security he claims he needs 🤷‍♀️

milveycrohn · 02/09/2024 23:40

Actually Ribert Fellowes was the late Queen's private secretary for many years. Yet Harry complained about the 'grey suits' and people surrounding the Queen. Who then did he mean?

I think he might have realised that his chances of winning are slim (the judge's remarks on allowing the appeal weren't exactly encouraging)

So he is perhaps looking at other ways of visiting that saves enough face.

And of course there was an article (attributed to sources) that Meghan wants him to drop the cases and put it all behind him. Of course we don't know how reliable that is. But it gives a way for them to say its to iffy for her and the DC to visit, but for him to come and go a bit. All depends on what he wants to do and who he wants to see in the next couple of years, and whether he wants to be here for IG Birmingham

Robert Fellowes was very much one of the 'grey suits'. I have always wondered how it affected Diana's relationship with her sister Jane and
did Sir Robert ever come home from the office saying 'your bloody sister...'!

Diana lied to Fellowes about her involvement with Andrew Morton's book. When it came out she had been intimately involved, he offered to resign, but the Queen refused. That must have put a huge strain in family relations.

Viviennemary · 03/09/2024 11:23

Apparently Harry stayed with his uncle Earl Spencer at Althorp during his recent visit to the UK. Article in DM. Well well that was a bit unexpected.
