Because I would assume the Royal Family would accommodate food allergies and disability access needs.

Yes they will. But they are just highlighting this. And also people’s need differ wildly, so getting in touch to discuss specific needs would seem sensible. I would not assume that a castle would be in any way accessible for my husband, so the fact that they say they can be accommodating is reassuring. It is by no means a given

Gorgonemilezola · 26/08/2024 18:45

Do you also object to any restaurant who requests diners let staff know of any dietary requirements? Or object to workplaces with dress codes?

Nadeed · 26/08/2024 18:46

Gorgonemilezola · 26/08/2024 18:40

In your oh so humble opinion.

So you think Cherie Blair should have worn a dress or skirt to keep the Royal Family happy?

I think @Nadeed is deliberately playing with us!

I'm thinking artificial unitelligence.

lazybrownfox · 26/08/2024 18:50

Is this just a big pile on to detract from the fact that the Princess of Wales has been out in public again and looked fabulous? I can't see any other reason for most of this.

It's certainly an odd reaction.

Nobody is criticising Catherine. So I do not know why you are claiming it is a pile on. Threads meander into different topics. That is how a chat forum works.

Nadeed · 26/08/2024 18:54

Nobody is answering my question. So I will just assume you all think Cherie Blair should have work a skirt or dress to keep the Royal Family happy instead of the acceptable smart trouser suit she did wear.

Nadeed · 26/08/2024 18:55

Anyway do not worry. I am only commenting because I am ill so looking for posts to comment on. As soon as I am well I will be busy again and the Royal Family will once again be a board I ignore.

I wasn’t aware they were unhappy. I thought it was Tony who wore the wrong trousers, not Cherie? It was well known that the late Queen wasn’t keen on trousers, but I’m sure she wouldn’t have mad made Cherie feel uncomfortable for doing so. Remember the story of Philip eating with his fingers to make a guest who couldn’t use cutlery, due to dexterity problems, feel at ease?

Having seen loads of tourist in the queue ahead of me at St Peter’s in Rome recently be turned away for bare shoulders and short shorts, you’d clearly be surprised how many people don’t have a clue that there may be dress codes to comply with….

Well then they are probably not that bothered about going in the first place if they couldn't be arsed figuring out if there were rules.

And for a wedding there aren't rules in the same way. There are general expectations, which everyone has a pretty good idea of. Unless it's one of those cringy everyone dress in the same colour ideas which are awful anyway.

I've been to a wedding with a standard dress code (that wasn't mentioned in the invitation as normal) and one guy turned up in jeans and a tshirt. He looked a bit out of place but it was clearly his choice, he didn't not know what was usual he just wasn't bothered. Which is fine, up to him . Grooms weren't offended, just mildly bemused. It's still patronising to instruct people how to turn up to a wedding.

The Philip story is one of those urban myths which has been applied to lots of famous people over the decades.

It was front page news that Cherie Blair had worn a trouser suit which was against Royal protocol. Thankfully they now allow women to wear trousers.

I walk on moors all the time. But I am unhappy that grouse moors are very bad for the native wildlife and habitat. All so rich people can shoot birds/
You get grouse in the lanes around here that have been reared and are so tame they wander towards you. It would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Edited

Given that the RF don’t comment on such things, didn’t you think it was the papers that were assuming that Cherie’s sartorial choice had cause offence?

DelectableMe · 26/08/2024 19:03

Funny how the Philip story was actually recounted by the woman's husband.
Trouser suits were never against "royal protocol". Plenty of women wore them, in every royal residence.

Quite, plenty of photos of Princess Anne in trousers back in the day

No, that is Sophie’s gig. She is patron of the Paralympics. And the opening ceremony isn’t until Wednesday evening

I personally would not have had any problem with Cherie wearing a trouser suit. But it’s not my house and so, inevitably, not my rules. If people I visit have strictures, I will comply (shoes off/shoes on is the commonest one I can think of)

At about the same time period as the Blair’s visit to Balmoral, I was working in a large firm which openly discouraged women from wearing trousers. So I wore skirts, because although I personally thought it was a silly rule, it was their office and their rules.

So in Cherie Blair’s position, I would have worn skirts. Unless I deliberately intended to ruffle feathers. Reading her account of her trips to Balmoral, that may well have been the case.
