Netflix deal, looking like it may be over for H&M

The rumours have been doing the rounds for a while, but Puck News now reporting it, which means it is very likely that their contract with Netflix will not be renewed.

"The streamer is not expected to renew its five-year, $100 million deal signed in 2020 with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Meghan’s passion project, the animated kids show Pearl, has already been canceled, and the unscripted cooking and polo offerings didn’t connect the way the royal couple’s Harry & Meghan did. "

Its true, she’s an influencer.

So the deal must be, instead of paying a fee to promote the product, which meghan will think is beneath her, she ‘invests’ in these companies.

The NYT points out that they haven’t said how much is invested, so they know the deal too.

Theres no money exchanged, but meghan will get a share by promoting the brand and wearing the products.
So just influencing…but the duchess version….where she makes out she’s doing it for the empowerment of women and investing in their vision.

CarmelaBrunella · 30/08/2024 08:57

.... when she's just investing in herself.

Hilary Rose has a new column in The Times today about what should be updated in the paperback version of Spare. It's quite amusing. My favourite line is: “At Archewell,” I say to the haters, “our motto is ‘Show up, do good, cash in’.

That is funny! Thanks!

So she was wearing a Cesta bag while on her Colombia trip, a trip where she was meeting a Vice president, flying on a presidential plane to visit various groups and give lectures.

It was just PR for her brands shes investing in, while Colombia pays millions on security and flight costs. The presidential plane a backdrop to products she’s merching. It’s actually shocking. How can Harry not be deeply embarrassed by this behaviour?

He seems to have lost all reason and judgment. If he ever had any to start with.

I know she left the RF because she wanted to be Queen of her own Californian court and has been hustling for glory ever since but did it never occur to her that she could have been one of the biggest figures on the planet if she’d just stayed with the RF? If she’d played her cards right it wouldn’t have been that difficult to achieve icon status - front covers of top magazines, beautiful clothes by top designers, A listers wanting to be photographed with her, etc with not that much effort. 🤷‍♀️

But having to rely on H's dad and bro for income and a place to live.

And the curtseying thing.

It’s called snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

They would have been among the richest 'not in the direct line' royal couples ever because of Harry's inheritances. So, yes, they'd have been in such a great position. With how it's worked out, with Catherine's illnesses, if they had been able to 'keep calm and carry on' in the face of the negative press they received, I'd say that by now it probably would have turned and she'd be lapping up hugely positive coverage about how she was selflessly stepping in to 'save the day' and would be the 'public face' of the RF while other big figures are out with illness or caring responsibilities.

She didn't understand British culture (effectively the press 'hazes' newbies to the RF, especially the women) and he has too much personal baggage to have helped her through it. I'm not saying the hazing is right but there was a clear pathway to a really great quality of life for their family which I think could have included spending a fair amount of time outside the UK, but without the cashing in aspect (but like I said above, they were much more well off than Andrew and Sarah were, for example, in the 80s, and had more options as a result).

Omg that's really quite sick. Look how the bag is angled for the photos. She really is ruthless.

And the curtseying thing.

I would put money on there being accepted forms of deference that must be paid to the power brokers in Hollywood - the Oprahs and Tyler Smiths etc- that demand a bit more of Meghan than a quick bob up and down….

lazybrownfox · 30/08/2024 15:47

Twistybranch · 30/08/2024 08:09

Ouch!

Some of the best bits:

Between not launching her lifestyle brand, not being invited to A-list events and not visiting the UK with her husband, where does Meghan find the time to be an international businesswoman, that is what I want to know.

Meghan would not tell the newspaper how much she put into the brand, nor what ownership percentage she now has in the company, but Cesta confirmed it was a minority stake.
So I am guessing that it was sixpence, a free jar of jam and a signed photograph of the Duke and Duchess being presented with their Golden Grifters of 2024 award.

Like all influencers — which is what she has become — Meghan always seems to be invested in the higher purpose of self-valourising while imposing her superior taste on the scabby masses for clicks and cash.

And now she’s having to rely on WME and Netflix, neither of whom seem very impressed with her. No one else with big money wants her.

Curtseying seems a very small price to pay for all the privileges she could have had in the RF.

But, but,... she didn't know how to, in spite of having ballet lessons and having curtseyed in Suits!

Oprah's very good friend, Harvey Weinstein, could probably attest to that.

@Not2identifying I totally agree! I said on these threads before that if they've just taken a few quiet years to raise their babies, maybe split their time between the UK and the US until Archie started school, then they'd be in the perfect position now.
Everyone would have understood Meghan taking extended maternity leave and just doing the odd commitment now and then. Harry could have carried on with his core patronages but scaled back to spend time with his little kids for a while and now they'd be coming into to their own.
They would be the face of the family while the others battle illness, they'd have the pick of overseas tours as no one else is able to travel right now, they'd literally have it all.
Instead they got greedy and wanted immediate riches and super stardom which they had no skills to realise on their own outside of the royal family.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 30/08/2024 18:47

@BackToWhereItAllBegan and I bet they are absolutely gutted as to how it has worked out. They would absolutely have been top of the heap at the moment. Harry must look at his life and wonder WTF went wrong. Even more negative press than before, ridiculed, work drying up and treated with derision. All he can get is a handbag-promoting micro-jaunt to a 3rd world, drug addled country where he looked like Meghan's valet and even that has been panned by even the US press.

They are the cautionary image for Caveat Emptor.

CarmelaBrunella · 31/08/2024 05:30

So this tour was about her promoting handbags?! 😲

I think Harry could have been good on a cookery show if he was willing to be a bit silly and play on the prince in America angle eg he makes boxed Mac and cheese or has American guests demonstrate how to cook an American dish that he is unfamiliar with then eats with them.
This idea obviously depends on him playing the Harry that we used to know and accepting that the episodes would be set up so the audience laugh at him sometimes.

But the Harry we used to know wasn't the real Harry, was he. He was the Harry the royal family PR machine created the image of, a persona they crafted along with the media of a cheeky chappy Prince.
What we see now is the real Harry. This is who Harry actually is, which has been revealed since he stepped away from being a working royal, which meant the royal PR of his made up character stopped and the real Harry, who he was all along of course, has been revealed to us.
He hasn't changed.

It takes emotional intelligence to have a plan like that. Something these two don’t possess. It’s all knee jerk reactions, greed, ego and spite with them. They’re their own worst enemies.

JADS · 31/08/2024 09:30

I think Harry has always shown us who he is, it was always there under the surface. I think he both the fun loving life and soul of the party, but also the miserable, difficult man behind closed doors. You see these men on AIBU all the time. I do think that Harry's fun personality is lubricated by alcohol so having given it up, the miserable guy is there more.

I remember watching a very old interview with William and Harry where they are both talking about being in the forces. William speaks well and is somewhat jokey, but Harry is petulant and rude, both to the press and his brother. He interestingly also puts himself down and William is quick to pick him up and say no that's not true. Harry comes across as both a bit superior, but also extremely insecure.

I don't know if I'm explaining this well, but I've never felt much warmth towards Harry. I was also quite neutral about William in his younger days as he seemed a bit aloof, but warmed to him much more when he became a Dad (my children are around the same age).
