Anyone watching this? It's on My5. I thought the first episode was interesting. I was reminded of how popular they were and how much support they got.

@Vespanest I think looking for logic in some of these fan posts is a lost cause.

I'm honestly going to try not to engage with the nonsense any more. New day, new username, same (odd) expressions and overuse of !!

I get the code! Not N though, can't find previous incarnation but think much deletion

This is when the problems started and the relentless attacks against Meghan were relentless!

Excellent observation there...

The problems didn't start at the end of the tour to S.A. There had already been mutterings about the way they treated staff.

With regard to other things on here in the last few pages, I don't recall anyone else saying that they were bigger than the rest of the RF but I do think that Harry implied, in the OW interview, that other members of the family were upset because he and Meghan were so popular.

IsoldeWagner · 22/08/2024 19:37

Which is utter nonsense. As if other members of the family would be upset at a successful tour! Talk about self obsessed.

OP posts:
wordler · 22/08/2024 19:48

Which is also right out of the Diana playbook - it was speculated that Charles was very jealous of Diana’s popularity on their Australia trip.

Harry was comparing Meghan to Diana from very early on in their relationship - would be an easy leap for him to think that any criticism of Meghan from family members was about jealousy of the first successful tour - rather than them being uncomfortable with the way the pair were reacting to things.

IsoldeWagner · 22/08/2024 20:01

I was going to say the same thing, @wordler . The jealousy thing is from Diana.
It really is troubling how they're both obsessed with her. They really do need proper therapy.

Well they soon fixed the popularity thing!!

Ain’t that the truth!

The jealousy/competitive thing is interesting. Who said Charles was jealous of Diana? I’m not disputing it, just curious as to the origin of the claim.

I’ve noticed that people who are very competitive or jealous tend to think others are jealous/competitive towards them - sometimes it’s just projection

wordler · 22/08/2024 20:18

I also think that they were being badly advised by Meghan’s American agent and PR specialists who didn’t understand the cultural context of the popularity Meghan and Harry were experiencing at the beginning.

It must have looked insane to an American PR agency - the crowds and flags and billions of viewers for the wedding. Oprah falling over herself to interview them.

If you don’t have the cultural reference point that the crowds are there because of a combination of already built in support for the royal family plus the shine of a new royal ‘love story’ - then you think you’ve got the biggest superstars in a century on your hands.

I suspect that on that first six week break they took in Canada that they were brainstorming with the American team and being told that they couldn’t fail - they were superstars - they could turn that star power into billions of dollars in the USA.

I do think without Covid they’d have had a more successful first year doing events and projects in the USA but it would have petered out eventually if they can only rely on who they are for attention and not what they can do/produce.

You make a very good point about what was going on during their 'extended break' in Canada. It seems so obvious now you say it. They are so conniving.

I agree up to a point, but I’m not sure they were brainstorming with their American team. I think they came to the concerned were superstars all on their own and just thought that would be enough. They don’t seem to have formulated any plan and they seem unwilling to listen to any advice

After the tour of South Africa, they were bigger than the rest of the royal family put together!

This is when the problems started and the relentless attacks against Meghan were relentless!

Imagine the result of an AI programme coded by an 8 year old, incompetently retrofitted into a second generation Amstrad, and wired up to my Nan's gob. Well that's what this reminds me of.

Let’s just stick with the 8 year old.

I’m not sure if she was given bad advice or is just terrible at taking advice.

No. They’ve even erected a statue to commemorate the event and sainted them

I can actually imagine William and Kate being overjoyed that H&M were taking the spotlight off them for a bit. Louis was a tiny baby when H&M married. In Spare, Harry whinges about William not leaving Kate with the baby (and 2 other young kids) before his wedding. It's clear W&C are quite hand on parents, not toting their kids on World tours would have been a huge plus.

The jealously angle is something I've never wrapped my head around. Good PR for the RF reflects well on the whole of the RF.

With regards the need to pivot due to Covid, look at Mike Tindall. He was making money on the after dinner circuit, he moved into podcasting and has done a really good job. Nobody gave him a $20 million deal. I still don't think I'm a Celeb was a good idea, but he didn't embarrass himself overly. He strikes me as someone who could be a bit of a liability for the RF, but seems to tread just about the right path. H&M could have had a similar Royal adjacent life, it's clear that's not what they wanted.

Imagine you’ve been Meghan’s agent / PR during Suits and you’ve been busting your butt to get a very minor cable show actress all the stuff she wants - auditions, merching opps, advertising deals, interviews, photo spreads, freebies etc

PR is a slog when there’s so many minor actresses all competing for the same pot.

The sudden change in fortunes must have blown their minds - suddenly everyone wants an interview, a photo, an exclusive. Companies falling over themselves to send merchandise. (All of which the palace makes you send straight back!)

You can see why they might have advised splitting off from the stodgy rules - but keep half a foot in so that you get to go to the glamorous and high publicity events!
