Anyone watching this? It's on My5. I thought the first episode was interesting. I was reminded of how popular they were and how much support they got.

Oh I might give it a view then! 🤣
I actually missed all the ( joy) at the time so I'm finding it interesting seeing it with my own eyes, previously I've only heard snippets from posters here .

I'm not commenting on other topics here , it's got nothing to do with your thread title and is frankly boring old news that has been debated to death for 40 odd years now .

Indeed 👍.
Let us know what you think of the documentary.

A few words on the whattaboutery

A man who can fly an Apache helicopter!
Just like several members of his family (some of whom, like Andrew, were qualified on more than one airframe) so that's not a stand-out. His academic record OTOH falls short of the others, and there is no sign that there was a later blossoming.
A man who wanted to fight with his unit in Afghanistan!
Like Andrew, who did the same in the Falklands War
Was always dong his own thing!
Not sure what you mean by this - it's a bit of a double-edged comment

I agree though Meghan wasn't following royal protocol, just like a narc:-
Wasn't having an affair with another man whilst married to Harry!
Not sure any of them had an affair that early in their marriages - even Charles and Diana remained faithful until after Harry was married, and for many royals there is no hint of infidelity.
Wasn't hanging out with people like Epstein!
Except it's likely she did, which is why she was on the list of people who could be called for testimony
Mind you Meghan could hang with Ghislaine Maxwell and learn some royal protocol!
Ditto
Didn't get caught topless with an American Businessman, like Ferge did in the 90s!
After her separation, and the result of the the sorts of press intrusion (long lens photography in to private property) that is no longer permitted, post Levenson. Given Harry's court cases on press intrusion of that era, I would him to expect him to condemn heartily the re-use of such intrusively obtained material.

Now, back to the point - what did you make of the documentary?

Wow, you must be a Royal correspondent!
Royal affairs:-
Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips - Both had affairs
Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles - Started in 1986. The whole world knows this
Princess Diana and James Gilbey / James Hewitt - Neither Charles nor Diana were faithful

Meghan was the TALL girl on the yacht with Prince Andrew and Epstien? Nope too tall!

The first part was great!
Harry & Meghan were more poplar than the entire Royal Family after the African tour!
Then it went to hell

myrtleWilson · 22/08/2024 12:28

It's a bugger when you get a stuck key on your keyboard isn't it? Probs down to too much bashing

Nope, not a reporter of any sort

H&M have been married 6 years. My point was that absence of an affair that early in a marriage isn't really remarkable.
So who had affairs before that?

Anne and Mark - as far as anyone knows affair started after that point (mid 80s seems likeliest, given age of the other daughter and when Anne met Tim, so10+ years down the line)
Diana- you're right, it was 1985, so nearly 5 years after marriage (Mannakee was the first)
Charles - unspecified time after that

Anyone other than Diana?

Re Epstein/Maxwell - I am most emphatically not referring to the dreadful yacht girl rumours.
Solely the legal cases where she was on the list of potential witnesses

I agree that the SA tour was a tipping point - but probably not the same reasons

What do you think of the Ch5 documentary?

Serenster · 22/08/2024 12:39

Harry partying and playing strip pool with girls in Las Vegas, all caught on camera, whilst in a relationship with Cressida Bonas has clearly passed LAW2010 by….

I also recall Meghan was the party who summarily ended her marriage to her first husband whilst living away from him in Toronto. I don’t imagine you can have any idea what led up to that, so setting her up on a moral pedestal here seems a little unwise, at best?

IsoldeWagner · 22/08/2024 12:59

Also, Meghan's beach wedding to Trevor was... interesting 🤔

by all accounts she was still living with Corey, when she was out looking for a new beau !

IsoldeWagner · 22/08/2024 09:16

@WinnieTheW0rm excellent points.
Of course Earl Spencer and William believe that wretched Panorama interview should be shelved. Talk about manipulating a woman! Awful.

I agree with them. Diana wasn't academically clever but she was savvy and it's such a shame bastard Bashir hoodwinked her into that interview, not only did they get their 'story', off the back of skullduggery, but they ripped apart peoples lives, publicly, it's a bloody disgrace and people should have done time IMO
It's a shame Harry only inherited her academic abilities and not her savvy side, it's a perfect shitshow from their podium, for the whole world to see
It's going to be a massive crash for PH if the oh-so perfect Miss Markle dumps him for another sucker to bleed dry - maybe then he'll have some hands from across the pond eh?!

Exactly the same post and phrasing as a different poster yesterday 🙄

Definitely!

And wearing out the exclamation mark key too.

Truly pathetic.

This has been alleged, actually. Time will tell.

The first part was great. Harry & Meghan are certainly besotted with each other!

After the tour of South Africa, they were bigger than the rest of the royal family put together!

This is when the problems started and the relentless attacks against Meghan were relentless!

Serenster · 22/08/2024 14:59

Harry and Meghan themselves actually claim that the problem was after their tour of Australia and New Zealand when she was pregnant with Archie. Do keep up!

Thedom · 22/08/2024 15:02

South Africa was the tour where Meghan stood in a shanty town which was the home of some of the poorest and most disadvantaged children and families in the world, and complained that 'no one asked her if she was okay' and something about her need 'to thrive and not just survive.' ;.

Most of the criticism was as a result of how tone deaf, unsympathetic and self centred she came across in that interview..

Their tour of S. Africa was where they really showed how egocentric and out of touch they were. Both her and Harry used the tour to complain, complain and complain.

That is why they were roundly criticised after the SA tour, nothing to do with it being a success, they put a whole dark cloud over that tour with their bitching.

jeffgoldblum · 22/08/2024 15:04

I might be remembering wrong @Thedom , but I thought it was worse than that , wasn't the young woman and girls she was meeting also victims of rape and abuse?

CoffeeCantata · 22/08/2024 15:05

After the tour of South Africa, they were bigger than the rest of the royal family put together!

Well - there's the problem in a nutshell. Meghan and Harry never grasped that the RF is not a popularity contest. It's a constitutional institution, based on strict rules and hierarchy. They were never going to be part of that.

Meghan thought she'd knock everyone for six and...I don't know? Perhaps she imagined the Queen might say 'Do you know, Meghan dear, you are so utterly, unspeakably, gorgeous and talented that I think I'm going to make you Queen after me and give boring old Charles and William a miss."

What a Silly Billy she was. Unfortunately her husband was even sillier, with much more to lose.

Thedom · 22/08/2024 15:08

You are right, I think I got it mixed up.

Gorgonemilezola · 22/08/2024 15:12

'After the tour of South Africa, they were bigger than the rest of the royal family put together!'

But why would they be boasting about that? Why is it so important? It's not a competition. They were members of the royal family, not a pop duo. What do you mean by bigger? Are you like Donald Trump, measuring the size of the crowd?

Harry and Meghan were the shiny newlyweds at this point. Of course they garnered interest. If they'd stuck around for more than 5 minutes, the newness would have worn off and they could have got down to the real work of supporting the rf and HMQ, but as soon as the public and the press started to fawn a little less, off they buggered.

Sandwichgen · 22/08/2024 15:26

Ah, Nicholas Soames . I think it was his ex-wife who said sex with him was like having a very large wardrobe with a very small key in the door falling on top of you

They were the shiny new thing at that point, of course they got a lot of attention. It's a cycle that we see with the royals in every generation.

The problems started because Meghan thought it appropriate to stand in the middle of South Africa on a tour that was designed, as all royal tours are, to centre those they were visiting and instead complained that no one asked if she was ok. Tone deaf doesn't begin to cover it.
