@Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar - excellent summary!

The only thing I'd tentatively challenge is the assertion that Meghan lied about Archie's titles. Oprah interrupted her but my theory is that she was going to say that there were conversations about changing the letters patent so that her children wouldn't be prince/princess when Charles was King.

“ RFKHR President Kerry Kennedy said the royal couple had been "incredibly brave" in addressing the issues of mental illness and racial justice.”

“Prince Harry has also said he had to step back from royal duties to protect himself and his family from the "toxic" situation created by the UK press.”

I agree with both these statements.

These accolades were before the Netflix doc and Spare where the issue of the so called royal racist was completely left out; the interview Harry gave to Tom Bradby contradicting his wife’s words to Oprah; and the reprehensible actions of Meghan leaking a private letter to Scobie, Scobie releasing an ambiguous passage of his book to a Dutch publisher and the shit storm that followed, which neither of them have chosen to speak of and put right or explain themselves - complicit in their silence. That RFK award is utterly meaningless, as are the contemporaneous kind words and articles surrounding it.

Omg. Why do these royal threads end up the same way going on and on about H&M! Get over it 😵‍💫🤯

Hear hear!

Thanks. And possibly you are right that she would have given a further clarification as to what she meant. I guess we’ll never know, as Oprah is a dreadful interviewer. However, she tied in that conversation with the colour of her son’s skin, whereas the reality is that is has long been Charles’ plan to pare down the monarchy and Harry knew this. We do know that they once said they would not burden their children with titles, then bleated about them not having them, then immediately foisted them onto their children ( along with a ridiculous try hard name for their daughter that will forever tie her to royalty) as soon as QEII died. And they cling onto their own despite vilifying the family that bestowed them.

@Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar

Reading a transcript of that part of the interview is so frustrating. It amazes me that she was able to insinuate so much without saying anything at all in a straightforward way. Weighing up how vague and convoluted she was with the damage she did with those comments is mindboggling.

Edit to add: and I was saying on another thread (the German documentary one) that if they'd made slightly different decisions their public profile would be so much more positive. The British media really praised them for not giving Archie a title after his birth. They were 'down to earth' and 'following in Princess Anne's footsteps with their determination to give their kids a normal life', etc, and then they undid it all with their 'it's not their's [the monarch's] to take away / it's his birthright' comments - even though of course it is in the monarch's gift to change royal titles like Prince/Princess!

Opinion - I do agree Meghan Markle received a crash course in racism that was called out very early on by Harry and then women MPs. For the future, the UK will be perceived as having missed their one golden opportunity. Not that Meghan cares anymore about our country, can’t say I blame her either. I despair about the blindness on both the left and the right. However, it may be the quiet conservatism of many that is preventing an open dialogue on matters that become so political. I am always curious about life, race and culture but I know any curiosity I have must be tempered with respect for differences and thinking how what I might say to someone will be received. I may have no ill intent expressing curiosity about skin colour but it is never something I would say about someone I did not know. Catherine clearly has a sensibility that I do not share and it points to a woman who is insular and not forward thinking. Catherine othered Meghan and she is now seen by many as a royal ‘Karen’, a product of her upper middle class background who more than anyone needed a crash course on the subject of race relations. A ‘baby brain’ text cited as not something to be said about herself when they did not know one another well is far less of a problem than othering all those who are not 100% white.

Opinion: Meghan Markle’s crash course on Blackness | CNN

Meghan Markle’s introduction to the Royal Family was anything but smooth. Forced to reckon with the classist, racist and sexist British elite, author Sophia A. Nelson argues that Markle has found love, support and admiration from her Black American “si...

Perhaps because they are generally started by Harry and Meghan fans trying to get in digs at Catherine, William etc..

Op has shown her hand in the posts upthread about Harry supposedly “escaping “ (frankly stalking would be a better name for it) the supposedly “toxic” royal family.

Interesting to note that the family seems so much less ‘toxic’ since he left! There are no leaks, no rumours, no insinuations apart from the ones relating to him and his wife.

The problem is the toxic pair don't give a shite about anyone else's mental health, do they?

Very true - out of their own mouths. But you're entitled to your opinion.

They have done nothing since 'the fleeing' but stick the boot in to Harry’s family. Including children. And taken their members of their Squad, who have abused Harry's family in the vilest way, on pseudo royal trips. And briefed the odious Scobie while berating the rf for briefing others. The silly pair have need a little introspection.

So many insults in 3 lines . In what way did Catherine other Meghan ?

Marbledwhite · 01/08/2024 17:52

Catherine othered Meghan and she is now seen by many as a royal ‘Karen’,

Anyone who describes a woman, royal or not, as 'a Karen' has nothing of value to say at all.

In my opinion.

Sunnydaysandthebeach · 01/08/2024 19:18

It would seem so,

What about racism and Black Lives Matter?

On Memorial Day this year, 25 May, black birder Christian Cooper was walking in Central Park, New York, when he ran into a woman called Amy Cooper (no relation), who had let her dog off the lead in a leash-only area of the park.
He asked her to put her dog back on the lead. Her response was to call 911 and, in histrionic tones, tell operators that "there's an African-American man threatening my life". The entire exchange was filmed, uploaded to social media, and Ms Cooper was from then on known as "Central Park Karen".
George Floyd was killed by police officers in Minneapolis that same day, just hours after the Central Park incident - meaning people began linking the racism of "Karens" such as Amy Cooper to the wider issue of systemic racism and police brutality.”

“What is a Karen in 2024?

DISCUSSION

What is a “Karen”? Seems to be an ongoing debate about the term Karen on this subreddit community. Has the term changed and evolved from its original meaning? Is it still a “look” and “race” thing or has it become more of a negative behavior and/or mindset that gets you classified as a Karen nowadays in 2024?”

What exactly is a 'Karen' and where did the meme come from?

To many the Karen meme - and its male equivalent Ken - sums up a specific type of white privilege.

It's a name used against women. Any name like that is stereotyping, reductive and offensive.
There is no evidence against Kate for any such behaviour and calling her a name is simplistic and unnecessary.

Catherine is largely a SAHM which is great. Wheeled out to perform when necessary, signs off on other people’s work with ‘early years are important’. Okayyyy. 😂 Who knew!

A Karen/Ken has a sense of entitlement which means they try to control or lecture others without any authority or reasonable need to do so. William and Catherine both did this to Meghan and Harry. A woman of substance arrived and they both hadn’t a clue…

Are you just unable to understand that a Karen is a derogatory term?
