I have seen several newspapers referring to this German documentary. It's the first I've heard of it.

Bower made the point that she immediately thought her role meant that she could cash in, she asked for free goods and services and seems to have been angry at being stopped. I wonder if the desire to monetise their connections and status was the trigger for leaving.

I don't know and I never will but I'd lay a small wager M thought she would front and centre ( hitting the ground running ) & he husband saying she would be good at representing the RF. But I think when she realised it was slow and steady wins the race - she wan't so fussed. I suspect she just wanted the titles , the money and the fame - BUT BUT I could be wrong. I thought she saw how she could take that to the US and earn a fortune.

Look I hope they are happy but without Harry being 2nd son of KC - really how much fame etc would they have as a fairly minor actress and plain Captain Wales . & they seem to be milking it. I wish they would stop trading on the RF when they have just bunged out so many half / un truths

I think you are right. They mentioned being financially independent in their statement announcing they were stepping back from their roles. Then the Queen said half in half out and monetising the Sussex brand wasn't possible and suddenly it became about press intrusion and privacy. In fact they were quite happy to maintain a public role, just on their terms and within their control.

I always thought that Meghan assumed that 2 brothers would be treated equally and that she and Harry would have equal status to William and Catherine . For reasons we don’t know , she has a deep dislike of Catherine and wasn’t willing to walk behind her or have second choice of tiara etc .

And she was cocksure that she would knock everyone - the RF and the British public - for six with her irresistible charisma, intellect, sophisticated style and utter gorgeousness. She clearly intimated as much to Harry, who believed it too.

As we know, that's not how the RF works, but if she'd just been able to take her place in the team with humility and learn the job, she could have been an asset to the RF. But she would've had to be a very different person for that to have happened. She wasn't going to tolerate a rival and had Katherine in her sights long before she met her.

Rhaidimiddim · 13/08/2024 12:00

CatrionaBalfour · 12/08/2024 22:46

@Mylovelygreendress why she didn't do the basic level of homework before taking on this role beats me.

My view is that she reckoned it was the best gig she was going to get at her age and stage in life, and she thought she could make something of it. TBF, she is a lot richer and more famous now, so hasn't done badly out of it.

BasiliskStare · 13/08/2024 12:03

One more point - I think ( correct me if I am wrong ) that Sophie volunteered to give Meghan some hints and tips . Sophie I think had a rocky start , but appears to have grown into what she is expected to do. I wish Meghan would have spoken to her about trying to make money out of the RF and how you can carve a place for yourself , even if it not leading to be Queen . I am old enough to remember Sophie trying to run her PR company - it did not work . I am with the late Queen - you're in or you are out.

I know that many don't want us to have a RF at all but whilst we do - this is how it works.

Lifestooshort71 · 13/08/2024 12:14

And my view is that she was always just going to use her connection with the RF (and possibly Harry, but I still like to think it was a love match) to give herself a massive leg up the greasy pole of global fame and stardom. She had no intention of befriending anyone, cosying up to the rellies or cutting any ribbons. Nope, this was only ever going to be all about the journey of the incredibly ambitious MM.

Spectre8 · 13/08/2024 12:23

Time for the RF to stop taking tax payers money and earn their own. I dont see why they cant monetize themselves with.some parameters set.

Hughs · 13/08/2024 12:31

For reasons we don’t know , she has a deep dislike of Catherine

These are my guesses..

  • C is tall with an amazing figure
  • always looks great in outfits
  • married to the rich brother
  • going to be queen
  • popular within the RF
  • close to Harry (or used to be, lots of shared history)
  • knows all the same people
  • close and supportive family of her own
  • not interested enough in Meghan's Hollywood status, such as it was
  • not effusive / grateful / star struck enough on first meeting
  • too wary, never going to fall for it
BasiliskStare · 13/08/2024 12:35

@Lifestooshort71 - I hope it is a love match - I think on Harry's side it is but the more this goes on the more I think Meghan married a rich prince and it has brought her global fame and stardom , so she has what she wants. My own opinion only - they were happy to get those rings exchanges asap. Possibly for different reasons. But that might be an ill informed ( certainly - I don't know either of them ) and a slightly naughty comment . They certainly seem to be hanging on to the titles for all they are worth.

I agree with all your bullet points, but would add that, for me, Meghan gives off vibes of not tolerating any (perceived) rivals where women are concerned. I've met people like her!

Catherine, as you say, will be Queen and will always take precedence over Meghan, however much more deserving Meghan thinks she is.

Harry's former affection for Catherine:I bet any money that, before M met C, Harry raved about her and said 'She's been like a sister to me - you'll love her!' To someone like Meghan, this is the kiss of death to the chance of a good relationship with Catherine. It's as plain as the nose on my face that the anti-Catherine venom must have come from Meghan. Why on earth would Harry suddenly develop a seething hatred for someone he'd once been so close to?

Parents/family: Catherine has a strong, close family behind her in contrast to Meghan's dysfunctional lot. And additionally (and I hesitate to mention this, because physical appearance isn't the criteria I personally use when evaluating people, but to ignore it would be silly) someone like Meghan would be all too aware that Catherine's parents are both good-looking people who dress stylishly and behave with decorum. Her dad (who I feel sorry for, btw) is both not quite so photogenic and also capable of being a source of embarrassment. Doria is a complete mystery to me.

I bet Catherine was just naturally wary of Meghan - and frankly, what intelligent person wouldn't be?? Meghan didn't like her, not just because she wasn't a hugger, but because it must have been obvious that Catherine saw right through Meghan from the get-go.

It's just so uncannily like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

It was sold as the greatest love story of all time, but Wallis (smart, sophisticated, worldly and ambitious) very quickly got bored with dull, dim-but-adoring Edward. I think their later lives were miserable and they were trapped together.

These days I wouldn't expect a couple like them to stay together for ever but I guess Meghan will stick it out as long as she feels it will benefit her. But, with the children, she's got a very luxurious meal-ticket for life, whatever happens between her and Harry.

Exactly that @Lifestooshort71 and Diana cancelled her protection off the back of the deceitful methods used by Martin Bashir to secure an interview with her.

At the time she cancelled her royal protection I don't think that Bashir's tactics were widely known, it's only been on the last few years. She wanted to do the interview to peddle her own version of events, it was a performance worthy of an Oscar and of course because she said it then it became the accepted version.

JudgeJ · 13/08/2024 13:46

It's just so uncannily like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

It was a totally deliberate costume performance.

Hughs · 13/08/2024 13:51

When Meghan cosplayed the Duchess of Windsor in that white outfit, I think at the Platinum Jubilee? The one she had made by Dior 😱😱😱

JudgeJ · 13/08/2024 13:53

Baital · 10/08/2024 12:58

Diana and Charles were both flawed individuals, as we all are. They both made mistakes, as we all do.

I found the instant canonisation when she died rather repulsive, and thought it diminished her by turning her into a cardboard cutout instead of a genuine and complex person.

She did some amazing things - holding the hands of AIDS patients - and could also hit on married men to the distress of their wife.

Spot on but in 1997 one wasn't allowed to make any negative comment about St Diana, Charles was evil and the Queen was unfeeling, not returning to London when the people were grieving, whipped up by the Press. She was expected to leave her grieving grandsons at Balmoral and come to London.
I think that both Charles and Diana were victims of a system which seems, thankfully, to have changed, he was being pressured to find a virginal bride and she wanted to be Princess of Wales, egged on by her ambitious father.

And it still didn’t sit properly !

Hughs · 13/08/2024 14:38

@Mylovelygreendress

I've always thought that one of the most shocking of Meghan's decisions - presumably it was a) to divert attention away from the Queen and towards herself and/or b) to upset the Queen at her jubilee celebrations by reminding her of a time that had caused her family, and her parents in particular, so much pain, and/or c) to disrespect the Queen openly and publicly.

Presumably Meghan thought those gains were worth dressing up as a Nazi sympathiser. Or maybe W+K encouraged her to dress as a Nazi and it's all their fault 🤷‍♀️

Booed on the steps of St Paul's in what should have been a joyful occasion. That worked out well.

I had no idea MM actually had a lookalike outfit made - I just thought she's found something similar in a current/recent collection and it was an unfortunate coincidence/ a bit dim to not do some research about what she was wearing. It's disgusting if she actually went out of her way to ensure she looked like that Nazi.

That was the event where they refused to travel in the mini bus with the Yorks, Tindall etc and insisted on a limo .

Hughs · 13/08/2024 15:32

I'm pretty sure it was described at the time as "bespoke" but I would only have read that in the papers. It wasn't particularly fashionable iirc so unlikely to be part of a collection, and was so similar it couldn't have been a coincidence I don't think. Although I remember one of the old guard H+M supporters on here swearing blind there was absolutely no resemblance 🤦‍♀️

It was a pretty spiteful thing to do imo and any remaining sympathy I had for Meghan vanished at that point. I'm afraid I don't think she's a very nice person.

Theinflictuswithrictusgames · 13/08/2024 15:53

Thanks, @Hughs . Just looked up the outfit and it is described as bespoke in a couple of articles - head to toe Dior. It's not a good look, the trench bit on the back of the coat is weird and makes it look like work wear not occasion wear , the collar is too big and makes her neck disappear and the belt just emphases a short and wide waist. Oh, and she's copying a racist, Nazi traitor, which is never a good look on anyone.

Hughs · 13/08/2024 15:59

It's not a good look

I agree it didn't really suit Meghan. Wallis looked much better in it 😬

JADS · 13/08/2024 16:16

I have never seen the comparison of Meghan's Jubliee outfit to Wallis Simpson and now I can't unsee it. Really weird person to align with. It's the 3/4 sleeves with the gloves that really scream Wallis.

Theinflictuswithrictusgames · 13/08/2024 16:31

There have been a few outfits @JADS . The bird shit dress in Oprah. That red, pussy bow shirt and trousers monstrosity she wore at One Young World summit just before QEII died (a picture of which her snapper pal Misan presumptuously sent to the National Portrait Gallery to be added to their collection, Mr Fig-Jam that he is).
