I imagine the corgis would speak more sense than Harry and his meaningless babble on that recent interview. It's like one of those games - here are the phrases now try to assemble them into something meaningful. He's useless when he doesn't have a prepared speech to follow.

That we should all be petitioning for an elected head of state ….and moving towards a republic

I know, right?

Look at the wonderful state of affairs in the US. And wouldn't it be fab to be able to enjoy a Presidential election every few years, as well as the Parliamentary ones? Hang the cost (which would be comparable to running the monarchy).

And the French Republic very nearly elected a far-right govt.

Some of the most liberal and happiest states in Europe are those which have kept their monarchies. If it aint broke, don't mend it. We have problems in the UK, but the monarchy isn't one of them.

I'd like to suggest that all members of the royal family sit rigorous exams to indicate fitness for position. (Understanding of family history, Commonwealth geography, fiscal matters, diplomacy, ethics, protocol and world affairs in general.) If not enough of them pass, they should be disbanded and replaced by the corgis.

The corgis would not be obliged to pass exams, naturally, but would have to accompany the prime minister of the day on a weekly trot around Windsor Great Park so that he or she might ruminate over pressing governmental matters in peace.

The corgis are renowned for leaking stories to the press

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 27/07/2024 11:53

Maybe so, but I always tell the Woof, the whole Woof and nothing but the Woof!

i have a second unpopular opinion related to my first:

if you found out your Uncle and your dad were enmeshed with child abuse networks, however innocently as Andrew and Charles assert they just enjoy the advice and company of paedophiles and not the same interests, would you want to move away so your children wouldn’t grow up in their company?

I feel sorry for William and Kate - navigating family events must be a safeguarding nightmare. People hate on Harry and Meghan but you can’t say they are not protecting their children. If they weren’t the royal family social services would have been involved a long time ago.

sausawyee · 27/07/2024 12:39

Talk about exaggeration 🙄 Charles enmeshed in a child abuse ring. I've told you a million times not to exaggerate 😂😂😂

sausawyee · 27/07/2024 12:41

Yes like the USA with an addled President and a pussy grabber like Trump and now his vice is attacking women with pussies Cats. 🙄😂

It’s his choice of mentors that let him down. Their position of privilege and unquestionability means child abusers use them as human shields. Charles’ decision to grant Peter Ball a property on his estate AFTER Ball’s conviction and the letters of support (RIP Neil Todd) was as reckless as Andrew meeting Epstein and staying at his house AFTER his conviction. Must be a bone of contention between the brothers

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 27/07/2024 13:16

Interesting that King Charles chose a young Rory Stewart as a mentor figure for William and Harry. He seems a solid choice. I just don't want to find out in the future that was a dodgy decision too.

I agree. It's shocking and not particularly well known about.

Dear god, don’t make me have to point out the difference between the US presidency and a putative elected UK HoS who would do a largely ceremonial role and be replaced every four years (or whatever term was decided on). And you might want to look up the difference between the French President and PM (clue — the President is the one who appoints the PM, and has considerable executive powers. It’s not a ceremonial role.)

I really like Rory Stewart too - against all my usual prejudice. I was sad he stepped away from politics - he is a fantastic asset to MI5 and the country. So disappointed he chose Campbell as his fellow podcaster though I suppose needs must. I can’t listen to Campbell so gave up on the podcast. Thick as mince and arrogant with it. Rory is a smooth operator and manages to come across as genuine. I hope he was positioned as a good choice for the Princes too and as a break with past choices.

CurlewKate · 27/07/2024 15:31

Odd how frequently people use "thick as mince" or similar to mean "I don't agree with him or her."

I use it to mean he doesn’t understand safeguarding. Sorry should have been more specific in my criticism.

Hughs · 27/07/2024 15:55

You gave up on the podcast because you think Alastair Campbell doesn't understand safeguarding? Confused

CurlewKate · 27/07/2024 16:00

@LeFromage "I use it to mean he doesn’t understand safeguarding. Sorry should have been more specific in my criticism."

So an interesting political commentator is "thick as mince" because he doesn't understand safeguarding? How very strange.....

CoffeeCantata · 27/07/2024 16:09

EmoCourt · Today 14:00

What about the fuss and cost of electing such a HoS though? Everyone groans enough when we have a GE - how do you think the campaigning and admin etc for yet another regular election would go down?

LeFromage · 27/07/2024 16:10

It’s your opinion that he is interesting and you are entitled to it - I think it’s just one of those things that immediately turns me off someone. But I do get other people don’t think safeguarding is not a priority in UK society and would place more priority on other aspects of life and politics. Recommend me one of the later/latest episodes and I will give it a try - I only listened when it first came out because of Rory Stewart and Campbell put me off but maybe his views have shifted?

Hughs · 27/07/2024 16:17

@LeFromage
I am intrigued by this - what makes you think AC doesn't understand safeguarding and why is that a problem for a political podcaster? Do you always check safeguarding understanding of journalists / writers / broadcasters / pundits?

LeFromage · 27/07/2024 16:36

@Hughs i think it was around November 2022 - an episode where they discussed Eddie/Suzy Izzard and how reprehensible Rosie Duffield was for not agreeing he was a girl. Neither of them could grasp the concept of competing civil liberties and how different human rights can come into conflict and the need to consider both sides and for allowing discussion in civil society but I gave a little more credit to RS because he seemed to be able to be open to the fact there were competing human rights at stake. So no I don’t check their credentials (how could I ?) I listen to their opinions and form a view from what they say and do. Same as anyone and it’s just my opinion.

@LeFromage Ah. I am afraid you won't be able to get opinions or expertise on any subject if you are going to discount anyone who does not hold GC views. I do think it's a little misleading to categorise him as "not understanding safeguarding" though.

Meghan is not protecting her children, she weaponised her own son to make a vindictive and untrue allegation of racism.
