Oh God @CoffeeCantata don't give Boris ideas, didn't he want to be World King?! I could see him getting elected President and then abolishing elections. I'm thinking he'd be a sort of George IV type but with even more scandal and profligacy.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 14/07/2024 15:16

And if she's thin, so what ? Cancer makes people lose weight. One of my best friends has had horrible bowel cancer at under 50 (at the same time as Catherine) and she has lost massive amounts of weight, was frightening to realise when I saw her. So it was quite bloody obvious to anyone with a brain that the PoW would be thinner after chemo/radio therapy.

upinaballoon · 14/07/2024 15:19

The bow is in the Wimbledon green and purple, on purpose.

I was brought up not to spend my time agonising that other people had 'more' things/cars/houses et cetera.

How are the tickets allocated for the Mens' Final? I know a couple of total plebs who live in the middle of England, far away from the London bubble. They put their names in the Wimbledon draw one year and got very lucky and got tickets for a Womens' Final. There was no 'knowing the right person' etc.

Except that she visibly isn't thinner or even thin. She's slim and looks very good.

Because it actually does have relevance to the institution of the monarchy and therefore the RF itself. Not the individuals, but what they represent.

[Disclaimer: this is nothing to do with Catherine personally, I hope she has a great day at Wimbledon and that she is left in peace to recover fully and completely.]

The reason the “lesser mortals” comment caused umbrage is because, let’s face it, this is what the symbolism of the RF reflects.

The RF stand high above the crowd on a balcony in fine clothes, waving. The ordinary people wait down below.

The RF drive through crowds of ordinary people while police outriders clear their path.
The rest of us struggle through traffic or travel on public transport.

The RF appear in horse drawn coaches and Rolls Royces wearing expensive clothes and priceless jewels. The rest of us do what we can afford.

These symbolic acts have not come about by chance. They are carefully curated. But everyone seems to accept them without critical thought or reflection about what they actually say?

It could be argued that the RF represent the United Kingdom and that our joint nations should be shown off to their best advantage, so the RF have to have the best of everything.

But does our Monarch really need twelve homes, massive private wealth and vast private estates in order to do that job effectively?

An elected President could have one town residence in which to hold state receptions, and perhaps a country residence to host overseas visitors, and that would be perfectly adequate. We could still have all the pomp and ceremony of the military marches etc and honour our history and traditions in that way.

I believe that the symbolism of the RF is crass and anachronistic in 2024. What is it telling us? That some people are intrinsically worth more than others and should be crowned with jewels and clothed in golden robes m, and feted, owing to an accident of birth?

It’s morally wrong and downright unjust imho. Why are we expected to stand in awe of wealth and opulence anyway? What has that really got to do with “god and country”? Surely people are a nation’s best assets? What message is that sending?

Maybe it’s my religious upbringing talking here, but to my mind a homeless man on the street has as much intrinsic worth as any member of the RF and should be afforded the same civility and respect.

We should not have representatives that highlight,, emphasise, or indeed encourage unjust divisions, disparity and inequality, in terms of wealth and opportunity.

We should have a representative who encourages unity, fairness and social coherence.

An elected representative would have at least had to fight their own battles, worked alongside ordinary people, shopped in supermarkets, travelled on ordinary flights, and above all, have reached their position through graft and effort, and would therefore have more awareness of what an ordinary person goes through and therefore a better understanding of what would help them.

Now countless people are going to say; well you will always have inequality in society and having a monarchy doesn’t change that. And I agree that we will always have inequality because we are all different, with varied capabilities.

But I feel that’s it is imperative that we try, as far as humanly possible, that every child starts with equal opportunities and as fair a chance as everyone else, to work hard, and do well and make a decent life for themselves and their family. And our elected representative, the man or woman at the top, should reflect that ambition.

It’s a shame you identify as a lesser mortal. I find it strange you have an aversion to British sovereignty and would rather have a president which will basically be a trumped up PM.
The RF do so much for charity but I guess it’s not enough for some.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but a presidency is a long way off just yet.

@Serenster
My grandparents left nothing ( financially) when they passed away. I inherited £10,000 when my parents died, my children look to inherit £300000 from me and a similar sum from their father. That's simply what the Royal family have done just over a longer period! Their family "employment" was war and conquering, mine was retail and local government! But we have both benefitted from our ancestors, the Royal family have just been better at it ( and doing it longer!) than me! It doesn't make them superior in any way, just luckier! But with wealth and land comes power. Give me another 20 generations or so and my family could be in charge ( or back down the mines, depends on how lucky they are!)

There seems to be a supposition with the Royal Family haters that anyone with land has hundreds of acres and they're bound to have children who have to be called thick twats on MN and sent to private school and shouldn't be allowed to.

It is possible for a reasonably bright state-educated person to buy small pieces of land and rent them out, if he/she chooses to spend money on land rather than other things.

upinaballoon · 14/07/2024 15:33

I think lesser mortals are people who don't write in proper sentences on MN, and don't punctuate properly.

Edit to wonder if the Djok is going to slide down from here or fight all the way back.

If people want to think of themselves as lesser mortals then that is their prerogative. It won’t be mine.

I have been on the bones of my arse and have been relatively comfortable.

Not once have I felt like a lesser person or ordinary because of the Royal Family.

And sadly, people don’t always vote for what is best.

I do not consider myself or any other cancer sufferer to be a "lesser mortal".

I am hugely offended that a national newspaper can describe us as such, and that can be seen as acceptable

I made a formal complaint to the national press standards body, and they agreed the comment was deeply offensive, but said it didn't break any rules, so they themselves can't take action.

they did say they were passing it back to the publication concerned in the hope that they would take action "in house".

She looks very tanned, and healthy. So does Charlotte. I wonder if she’s had a cheeky holiday because I doubt that suntan came from this country!

Edited

She probably popped off to Mustique for a bit. She didn't get that tan in the rainy UK.

JohnnyAndTheDead · 14/07/2024 15:44

Nice that she could turn up today. I wonder why she couldn't even get one of her staff to tweet a message of congratulations to Alfie Hewitt, if she's such a passionate and important proponent of the tennis game.

One year after entering the ballot I got notification I had been allocated tickets for the day of the Men's final. I was so excited and after a celebratory happy dance, I then wondered if I should sell them and started calculating how much they might be worth.
Then I looked again and saw the allocation was for court no 1.
Currently the Girls singles final is playing out, the Boys singles final having completed.
Although the junior's competition is important and there's fun to be had trying to spot a future star I didn't want to come and watch a junior match whilst listening to the cheers from centre court! So I didn't take up the offer. I know some people are happy just to be there and enjoy the atmosphere, maybe sitting in Henman hill but as it's quite a journey for me I gave it a miss.

I live in hope though!

up I got mens final tickets in 2003 (Federer v Phillippousis), the first time I ever applied to the ballot. There's loads of civilians there. I had to keep double checking the date on the letter as all it said was centre court and the final Sunday date. I couldn't believe it.

Serenster · 14/07/2024 15:59

You can’t queue for tickets from the semi-finals onwards, but yes, ballot tickets are still offered for those days. I have never been lucky enough to get them in the ballot (and I enter every year!) though I have won tickets for earlier days, and a friend once got tickets to the Ladies’ final. You can still buy ground passes though and watch the match on Henman Hill, which always has a great atmosphere.

Speaking g of the Ladies’ final, it was lovely to see Kate and Charlotte meeting with Barbora Krejčíková to personally congratulate her on yesterday’s victory. They also met with some of the other women players, including Lucy Shuker, Lily Miyazaki, Sonay Kartal, Flora Johnson and Emma Raducanu (not all seen in the photo below) - so nice she wanted to also focus on the women’s game despite not having attended yesterday.

I do like that dress but I fear I would resemble a very large blueberry if I wore it

Mylovelygreendress · 14/07/2024 16:05

I have been successful twice with the ballot including the 2016 Men’s Final ( Murray v Raonic).
I have also drink ( expensive) Pimms on Henman Hill .
Fabulous days out.

I have a tan this year.

I'm on Mat Leave, and in spite of the weather being mostly miserable, there is a blast of sunshine most days.

If you're tied to work, it's harder to get the sunlight, but she hasn't been, so easy to catch some rays at some point.

WolfFoxHare · 14/07/2024 16:12

It could be a very good spray tan for that matter. Charlotte will have been in school, I assume… we put sunscreen on DS every day but he’s still got a tan this year.

I think the Women’s Final would be better optics.

I think if I were mum to 3 still quite young children who had faced/is possibly still facing for all we know, death, I wouldn’t give a monkey’s about optics. I’d grab a bit of joy when I could. Hope she has an excellent day.

Exactly. Some of the posters on here are such bitter, negative people.

Serenster · 14/07/2024 16:15

Gosh, Alcaraz is on fire! Kate looking very likely to get a 3-set match after all…

How do you know it’s a tan from the sun and not a bottle/spray tan?

Some cancers such as colorectal cancer can cause skin colour changes too.

This is true! My friends daughter was tanned as anything she spent months in and out of hospital nowhere near the sun looked like she had been off to Spain

Looking closely at her dress it's carefully designed she looks great though good for her

It is right for anyone to challenge a national newspaper - or its gobshite mouthpiece -for referring to people as lesser mortals.

What is not right is for people to get arsey about the subject it was written about and laying the comparison at her table because she is a cancer sufferer too and it was not her opinion.

People on here did. And I think it was unfair.

A gobshite journalist got everyone bitching. Which is precisely the reaction they were going for.
