Mary Tillman says " There are recipients far more fitting. He publicly disrespected his family , ran away from service to his country. He is unworthy of this award"

She feels there are recipients far more fitting.

I think she speaks for many.

@TheFirmBiscuit I've no idea why you are citing Savile as a recipient of a "royal honour" as if the late QE decided to give it to him off her own bat. The Government of the day determines who gets the sort of knighthood he did (as you know) He didn't receive one of the Monarchs personal orders.

Anyway, Harry still seems quite comfortable using his Royal Dukedom and wearing his Royal Awards.

Savile was a clever and manipulative man. He hid in plain sight and he covered his tracks through carrying out some genuinely good charity endeavours. He raised a lot of money through his marathons etc. With the benefit of hindsight we now know that this was all an elaborate ruse to divert attention from what was really going on. He managed to make himself too big to fail. The fact that so many were duped in to believing that he was some sort of national treasure does not show that people were either stupid or complicit in his deception. It shows how accomplished he was in being able to deceive. He was the original fake news if you like. Looking back and implying that he was given honours etc as some sort of reward for his depravity is to massively over simplify the situation and is easy to do with the benefit of time

eta and is also a discussion to be had elsewhere

At the risk of another derail MI5 would have been fully aware of his predilictions and in so much as Prince Charles has real friends outside the aristrocratic circles Savile came close to being one. Add Laurens van der Post and Bishop Peter Ball to his circle we see at the very best poor judgement in close confidants.

We can add Mountbatten to that list too.

Interestingly Savile was deemed too controversial for a knighthood as far back as 1984 so he was absolutely on the radar of those whose job is to protect and advise the royals. He finally got the gong in 1990. The honours committee was advised of allegations around his behaviour in 1998 so at least two opportunities either to deny the honour or rescind it.

I'd love to know who didn't take them and why.

Pleased to see that you are acknowledging that this is your derail to take the heat off Harry and his undeserved awards.

Since this has been blown out of all proportion I guess the reception that he gets, should he go will be an indication of his current popularity in the US - here's a benchmark from 6 years ago.

Well hopefully it will be televised so we can all see.

It is not outwith the realms of possibility that folk will be paid to/encouraged to clap though.

Or boo.

I wonder which it will be.

Another US veteran award winner (2018)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Wood_(veteran)

Jake Wood’s charity is the recipient of a 6 figure sum from Archewell. He’s not going to bite the hand that feeds him.

TallestSally · 11/07/2024 11:03

I think it can be described as modern day fluffing.

Making things look more impressive for show.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 11/07/2024 11:04

The biggest culpability for Saville lies with the BBC. Without them, their years of backing him and their internal cover ups, he’d have remained an obscure, Northern DJ.

Vespanest · 11/07/2024 11:40

Come tomorrow those who want to bask in the glory that is Harry will find reason too. Harry as his fan club will always point out is still a Prince and he will still be wearing his “fake medals” which is somehow is different because it’s Harry. Mainly because he hasn’t got the courage to remove himself from the royal family which adds to my amusement that there is always a deflection of what the royal family do as if they are separate entities. Harry is the ultimate Nepo child mainly as he doesn’t see his own privileges.

AliceOlive · 11/07/2024 11:46

I hope they give him an inappropriate salute, too just to make it even more clear it’s a pandering paid engagement.

TheFirmBiscuit · 11/07/2024 11:49

That's one take a more charitable one is that he works with partners sharing common aims to help disabled and injured veterans find some peace in their troubled worlds.

that could also be used to describe Charles, the late Queen and the late Queens mother. In fact the majority of the royal family.

BasiliskStare · 11/07/2024 12:18

I would not agree with booing Harry - but for those who do not agree I think crossing you arms and not applauding his arrival on the stage , his speech or the actual awarding woul be a strong message. I am sure there will be plants in the audience who with clap and cheer like mad . And to be fair some will agree with this award for him. From what I have read he was tone deaf to ever think about accepting it and ask for a more worthy recipient

But what do I know Basilik ( proud holder of a 1500m swimming badge ) 😊

And those RF membets work to raise money for the work the charities do. Harry charges Invictus for his attendance.

In that link and the polling company I can't see how the questions were framed so as to solicit an answer - the fact that Newsweek think it was worth spending serious money on such a poll suggests to me they have an axe to grind. Given that Trump has a better than evens chance of winning the election should these views of seemingly random Americans even count ?

TallestSally · 11/07/2024 13:47

Seemingly random Americans seem to think that their opinions count on the Royal Family though.

And it seems that they count for something.

So…

@TallestSally Tbh, I can see why Americans were surveyed in this instance, because Harry now resides permanently in the US and this is an award in honor of an American serviceman.

I don’t think we have any business commenting on other members of the RF-although I’m a dual citizen so perhaps I can?! 🤣

Wow, that comment contains so much to unpack.

I’m a seemingly random American with all kinds of opinions.

TheFirmBiscuit · 11/07/2024 14:07

I suggest one reads the comments under that poll article - they question the Tillman Foundation itself as well as representing a weird set of contrasting views. Newsweek is a shadow of its former self, indeed it would seem to be involved in clout chasing.

In September 2023, Newsweek announced it would be making use of generative AI in its operations.[50][51] Its AI policy states that generative AI can be used in "writing, research, editing, and other core journalism functions" as long as journalists are involved throughout the process. In 2024, it rolled out an AI video production tool and started hiring an AI-focused breaking news team.[51]
