I agree and I’ve read a lot over the years due to research for my degree @Tizzwazz .

I won’t bore you with links, sure you can find them yourself on google scholar and google but here is one I read ages ago.

I'm not sure posting a Reader's Digest article is making the point you think it is. Although I always enjoy parts of the press pretending to take the high road whilst using people for clicks in exactly the same way those they name tabloid do.

LadyPenelopeForever · 13/06/2024 12:43

It was a nuanced to take in the general point @Tizzwazz correctly surmised.

@Tizzwazz, reading outside of microclimates is always enriching. I found this site and truly was taken aback by the promoting of anti Meghan rhetoric. Shocking!

Here is another link on your points.

For several decades, British tabloids — often characterized by sensationalism and emphasis on celebrity culture — have been known for…

Hannah Ortega looks like she has an in-depth knowledge of UK journalism, what with being a 'trending and dining reporter' for a local Texas paper. Not exactly Woodward or Bernstein

Journalism and rhetoric/writing degrees with a certificate in creative writing from The University of Texas at Austin. Former student in the Moody College Honors Program and Liberal Arts Honors Program. Current Austin American-Statesman trending and dining reporter.

And the Readers Digest as a source?

Comedy gold.

Thank you @LadyPenelopeForever.

As was reported, “…Yet it fell to the historian Prof David Olusoga, a contributor to the documentary, to land the most important point in this regard: the British media, especially the tabloid media, is a white industry. Its interpretation of events, its sense of fair play, importance and what may or may not be appropriate or indeed racist, is all shaped by this undeniable fact.”

So true.

MummyJ12 · 13/06/2024 13:22

The journalist who was chosen by Meghan but who wrote the brilliant satirical piece in the Cut must’ve been so racist. 🙄
Same with Edward Enninful. Completely racist obviously for snubbing her from his final issue of Vogue.

JaneJeffer · 13/06/2024 13:24

These ones made me wonder

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/06/2024 13:28

Prof Olusoga is pretty keen to work in that white media. Ditto accept a gong from the racist RF.

BemusedAmerican · 13/06/2024 13:29

The article cites another article that is trying to place blame on the UK's libel laws. You would think, if this is true, that Harry would support the First Amendment instead of calling it bonkers.

Edited for typos.

Come on, Bemused. Don’t you think it’s getting quite a bit bonkers?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/06/2024 13:31

Looks like I'll take a break until all the spamming by half-witted PR types is over. Hopefully it's just some keen newbies doing their probation and trying to prove themselves.

I'm not American but I have lived there and I'm finding the idea that the US has no tabloids or intrusive media culture amusing.

Some posts over the last few weeks, alongside the name changing but still familiar styles, suggest a barrel is giving up its last few scrapings.

AliceOlive · 13/06/2024 13:38

I meant, maybe we do need to give the first amendment another consideration, given the state of things. I’d like to see a few people stop speaking freely. I’d probably start with both of our contenders for President.

MummyJ12 · 13/06/2024 13:43

To be fair @AliceOlive it was a well made point either way!

BemusedAmerican · 13/06/2024 13:46

@AliceOlive over the course of a normal week, I shop at 4 supermarkets. NONE of them sell tabloids. They only have chocolate at the cash wrap. I see 1 tabloid at the start of the Target self check line, but just in passing because I need to out. I would actively have to seek a tabloid to find a print or electronic one.

I'm more concerned about social media. I have a coworker who only gets news from YouTube videos and Facebook. I keep having to show them the Scopes report to prove we aren't going to be killed by an asteroid, etc. People no longer seem to understand the difference between reputable and non- reputable sources.

A few years ago I read an article which said people don't need to learn facts anymore, they can Google. What they need to learn is how to weigh what they read and how to analyse online information to see what is fact, what is fiction and what is faction.

We have never needed analytical skills more.

BlueParrotRedParrot · 13/06/2024 15:58

Majority white country has majority white media shocker! Actually I would be unsurprised if the number of black media figures is disproportionately larger than the black population of the UK (4%), and disproportionately larger than the much larger Asian population (9.3%).

What proportion of the population gets to be a TV historian with a platform to create programmes about their pet subjects? Does David Olusaga ever consider his privilege over the white, working class counterparts of his childhood?

Ooh - has he? I didn't know that. I find him very annoying and preachy.
