Camilla snubs Brigitte Macron at D-Day Anniversary, rejecting her gesture of warmth

Well, isn't this a funny one.

Foreign heads of state are under no obligation to respect protocols of foreign royalty, particularly in their own country.

Seems Camilla didn't get the memo:

"Queen Camilla, 76, and Brigitte, 71, had an awkward moment on June 6 during a service marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Normandy, France. As seen in a video shared to X by the Daily Mail, French President Emmanuel Macron's wife tried to hold the royal's hand after they laid wreaths at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer. However, Queen Camilla didn't reciprocate, keeping her arm at her side. After briefly grasping the royal's hand, Brigitte stepped to the side and folded her arms in front of her.
Proper etiquette around interacting with the British royals has long been a highly discussed subject. The royal family's website, which has yet to be updated in full following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022, states, "There are no obligatory codes of behavior when meeting The Queen or a member of the royal family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms."

Funnily enough, Charles himself didn't follow royal protocol:

"Proving that there are no hard and fast rules around how to say hello, King Charles, 75, greeted President Macron with a hug at the British Normandy Memorial and kissed his wife's hand."

I guess Camilla's more royal than the royals themselves?

I think the Entente Cordiale is just fine, @TheFirmBiscuit . Largely because nothing negative happened.
Just in some folks imagination.

Bit like Kate moving away when a black woman tried to touch her hand.

Just when you think one poster has reached the pathetic nadir, another one says, "Hold my beer!"

Indeed @IsoldeWagner , there are quite a few photos of the pair of them giggling together like school girls, they seem quite relaxed and comfortable together.

It is misogyny to describe two grown women laughing as like giggling schoolgirls. Unless you also describe Macron and Charles laughing together as like two giggling schoolboys?

IsoldeWagner · 08/06/2024 15:05

You know what, Brigitte looked a bit unsteady on her feet. I bet Camilla put rum in her coffee when she wasn't looking.
Also Sunak left early. I bet Camilla sent him a false message from the Home Office.
Yes, we can all make stuff up.

I'm watching Monkey World over the top of the laptop and there's a lot of screeching and throwing of poop. Not at all like some posters on here.

That doesn’t even link to what I said either. Bit of an obvious attempt to insert an irrelevant slur 😆

???? @MyQuaintDog , seeing as I'm a woman of a certain age and indeed would describe two man giggling together as school boys , I have absolutely no idea what you are getting at or trying to say!

You said another woman is not allowed to take a Royal woman's hand. I simply said another occasion when this also happened and the Royal woman rejected the hand hold.

From my memories of visits to Monkey World, they either have to throw it or eat it.

Eh? No-one said that.

I have never seen anyone describe Charles laughing with another man as like two giggling schoolboys. I look forward to reading it on here though.

You can't teach class, I'm afraid. You know what else broke royal protocol? The guillotine !

Livingtothefull · 08/06/2024 14:12

I am not talking about Mme Macron, she doesn't represent the UK so what UK people may think of her is ultimately neither here nor there.

I am not talking about Camilla's management of the whole event, just this one specific incident, when the spotlight was on her. And she messed up. Sorry but she did - the wide reporting of this as an awkward and embarrassing incident is proof.

It is not about Camilla's feelings either or her personal unwillingness to hold hands. Yes it was a RF work event and their work entails representing her country, and showing warmth towards others when warmth is called for. And she looked cold, snobbish and standoffish.

Not saying it was all her fault, but her role includes the need to smooth over and avoid such things happening, and she didn't.

You do realise that the event was to commemorate brave men who gave their lives for their country ? To give thanks to them and the veterans who are still with us ?
Such an incredibly moving event and you are getting het up about a non existent faux pas ! 🤷‍♀️

No I didn’t. Read my post properly. I said “no one said touching wasn’t allowed” but that grabbing someone’s hand at a solemn moment was inappropriate. You then inserted something that is a load of bollocks and irrelevant

How do we know that Camilla ‘snubbed’ Brigitte Macron’s gesture because of Royal protocol, @TallerSally? Perhaps it is more to do with her being of a generation that is less keen on public displays of affection. I am younger than Camilla, and I wouldn’t be comfortable with someone I wasn’t particularly close to, trying to hold my hand in public.

MyQuaintDog · 08/06/2024 15:14

smilesy · 08/06/2024 15:12

So just to clarify, if a woman grabs a Royal woman's hand at a non solemn occasion, is that okay?
