Camilla snubs Brigitte Macron at D-Day Anniversary, rejecting her gesture of warmth

Well, isn't this a funny one.

Foreign heads of state are under no obligation to respect protocols of foreign royalty, particularly in their own country.

Seems Camilla didn't get the memo:

"Queen Camilla, 76, and Brigitte, 71, had an awkward moment on June 6 during a service marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Normandy, France. As seen in a video shared to X by the Daily Mail, French President Emmanuel Macron's wife tried to hold the royal's hand after they laid wreaths at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer. However, Queen Camilla didn't reciprocate, keeping her arm at her side. After briefly grasping the royal's hand, Brigitte stepped to the side and folded her arms in front of her.
Proper etiquette around interacting with the British royals has long been a highly discussed subject. The royal family's website, which has yet to be updated in full following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022, states, "There are no obligatory codes of behavior when meeting The Queen or a member of the royal family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms."

Funnily enough, Charles himself didn't follow royal protocol:

"Proving that there are no hard and fast rules around how to say hello, King Charles, 75, greeted President Macron with a hug at the British Normandy Memorial and kissed his wife's hand."

I guess Camilla's more royal than the royals themselves?

She’s not THE queen she’s husband to the monarch

Wife of the monarch = queen (consort, not regnant). As exhaustively and exhaustingly hashed out on this very board in September 2022.

Was this cleared with the touch police or does the rule only go one way ?

Someone is definitely talking out of their breeches 😆

Talking or squeaking?

Hard to tell these days.

PS: You know want to know who would have accepted Mme Macron’s gesture if she had lived to become Queen Consort? Diana - the eternal Princess of Wales

Lord above. Now we're getting confidently definitive statements about what a woman dead 27 years would have done if she hadn't been a) divorced and not part of this shindig anyway and b) dead.

I'm beginning to think the chemtrail theorists ("they're trying to send us all MAD!!!) might have a point.

It's all part of the Cult of St Diana the Martyr.
She was wronged (over 30 years ago) !

Diana actually had a good friendship with Bernadette Chirac, who gifted her with the Dior handbag that became a favorite. And after Diana died in a Paris hospital, Madame Chirac came and sat vigil with Diana’s body so she wasn’t left alone until Charles arrived with the Spencers.

Camilla really missed a trick there. A picture of her holding hand with Mme Macron in front of the memorial would have been iconic. It would have sent so many positive messages to the world and most importantly our European allies. She’s not THE queen she’s husband to the monarch so no protocol has been breeched. If she was THE queen she would have been included in a different part of the ceremony. Complete fail on her part. It’s down there with the faux medals, the costume uniform and our PM leaving before all the events of the day had concluded.

Diana didn't want to be Queen consort. We know that, because she divorced her husband. She would not have been Queen even if she had lived.

What’s that got to do with Mme Macron? If Diana was still alive, Mme Chirac wouldn’t have sat with her body one hopes 😂

IsoldeWagner · 08/06/2024 14:52

Indeed. Had Diana lived she would have been nowhere near Normandy, or Brigitte Macron.

And the relevance of that to the topic under discussion is precisely zero (unless BM is Mme Chirac in disguise.)

jeffgoldblum · 08/06/2024 14:53

By all accounts this was a rather unfortunate miss understanding, B macron and Camilla have been quite friendly with each other and informal too in past occasions as many photos show.

Evidence enough that Diana would have been perfect, had she lived and not divorced Charles and become Queen and attended Normandy...

She’d have probably been in Montecito - battling M for attention.

Which means this would not have existed.

C’est la vie.

No one said there should be no touching. Only that grabbing a hand after just laying a commemorative wreath (and making a hash of it on Mme Macron’s part) in a solemn moment, was not appropriate

Bit like Kate moving away when a black woman tried to touch her hand.

jeffgoldblum · 08/06/2024 14:57

Indeed @IsoldeWagner , there are quite a few photos of the pair of them giggling together like school girls, they seem quite relaxed and comfortable together.

Definitely. Diana was friends with Mme Chirac 30 years ago so the only logical conclusion to be drawn from that is that Camilla should have held hands with Brigitte Macron.

Obvious when you put it like that.

For a teeny minute there I though Camilla had a tattoo. Rebel! I thought.

Looking closer, I could see it was actually a bracelet of star shapes just past her glove.

Question is, if she did ever have a tattoo, what would she choose?

PS. I wouldn't hold hands with someone from work at a formal event. Not sure what Mrs M's thought process was there. Tres awkward.

I was watching the compilation of Larry the Cat footage (the No. 10 Downing Street Cat) on BBC the other night - the amount of people like Gove, and the head of Mitsubishi who tried to cozy up to Larry as a photo op and got the brush off were legion.

Sort of similar. Obviously Larry doesn't go in for wearing big hats. And he's a cat.

jeffgoldblum · 08/06/2024 14:58

Bringing an ill pow into this discussion to score points is unnecessary and rather embarrassing.

BemusedAmerican · 08/06/2024 14:59

@TheFirmBiscuit did it ever occur to you that Camilla had snot/blood/dirt on her hand and was being polite?

I would move away too if anyone tried to grab my hand.

Regardless if it was my colour or any other colour.

We aren’t all huggers and touchers.

Well it shows that graciousness in the Entente Cordiale can go a long way and something Charles has no problem with his second wife less so. This was the First Lady of France, taking one’s hand for a contemplative and prayerful moment of thanks for fallen DDay soldiers. Completely appropriate gesture, and it speaks volumes given how hard she avoided it.

It's in the same league of Sunak jetting off - it would have taken nothing to have held it briefly and shown common humanity as the eyes of the world watched this solemn moment. It's the job and on foreign soil to boot.
