Camilla snubs Brigitte Macron at D-Day Anniversary, rejecting her gesture of warmth

Well, isn't this a funny one.

Foreign heads of state are under no obligation to respect protocols of foreign royalty, particularly in their own country.

Seems Camilla didn't get the memo:

"Queen Camilla, 76, and Brigitte, 71, had an awkward moment on June 6 during a service marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Normandy, France. As seen in a video shared to X by the Daily Mail, French President Emmanuel Macron's wife tried to hold the royal's hand after they laid wreaths at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer. However, Queen Camilla didn't reciprocate, keeping her arm at her side. After briefly grasping the royal's hand, Brigitte stepped to the side and folded her arms in front of her.
Proper etiquette around interacting with the British royals has long been a highly discussed subject. The royal family's website, which has yet to be updated in full following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022, states, "There are no obligatory codes of behavior when meeting The Queen or a member of the royal family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms."

Funnily enough, Charles himself didn't follow royal protocol:

"Proving that there are no hard and fast rules around how to say hello, King Charles, 75, greeted President Macron with a hug at the British Normandy Memorial and kissed his wife's hand."

I guess Camilla's more royal than the royals themselves?

Aye. Poor Meghan.

She’s not THE queen she’s husband to the monarch

Wife of the monarch = queen (consort, not regnant). As exhaustively and exhaustingly hashed out on this very board in September 2022.

She's not the queen, she's a very naughty girl!

TheFirmBiscuit · 08/06/2024 15:16

They should have never have dropped the Consort. This is how you do it.

Diana actually had a good friendship with Bernadette Chirac, who gifted her with the Dior handbag that became a favorite. And after Diana died in a Paris hospital, Madame Chirac came and sat vigil with Diana’s body so she wasn’t left alone until Charles arrived with the Spencers.

Wow! With my Sherlock Holmes hat on, I think I've deduced something here.

FirmBiscuit - this story, pretty much verbatim, was written on that lovely, kind-hearted site, Celebitchy yesterday. I keep an eye on the psychopathic stuff on there from time to time.

Now, do you post on that sewer-pipe of a site, or did you read it there?

Hmmm. Very interesting, but not terribly surprising.

Careful now, you are ruining the SS narrative of a racist royal family.

Where’s the war memorial?

@CoffeeCantata 🤔 very interesting!

Well Catherine has been erroneously brought up, so I would say the gloves are off.

Bit like Kate moving away when a black woman tried to touch her hand.

Load of old cobblers! Link, picture, or it didn't happen.

But we all know that Meghan rejected QEIIs offer of a black aide during her very brief stint at a member of the RF.

Serenster · 08/06/2024 15:22

I am not talking about Camilla's management of the whole event, just this one specific incident, when the spotlight was on her. And she messed up. Sorry but she did - the wide reporting of this as an awkward and embarrassing incident is proof.

Funny though, if you read the French coverage of this, the focus is quite different. This Le Figaro article suggests that Brigitte Macron grabbed Camilla’s hand (“l’épouse du Président tente de saisir la main de la souveraine britannique”) and then did not pick up that Camilla did not want to hold hands (“Un refus que Brigitte Macron n’a semble-t-il pas saisi tout de suite”).

The article goes on to explain that, famously, there is an unwritten rule that British Royal Family shake hands, but other gestures are not the norm.

So the French don’t see this as Camilla embarrassing herself and the UK, they see it as a departure from the usual rules by Brigitte Macron.

Damn , busted it was borrowed to save time. No I don't post there haven't the time but I do read. Good point nevertheless so in keeping with King Charles' eco philosophy recycle until it hurts.

I shall have to try harder, just like Camilla.

I gave you an example to prove your point.

Happy to help.

So just to clarify, if a woman grabs a Royal woman's hand at a non solemn occasion, is that okay?

Being royal has nothing to do with it. If anyone is uncomfortable with unexpectedly having their hand grabbed then no it isn’t ok. Personal boundaries should be respected . Not everyone is touchy feely, nor do they have to be. If they are, then fine, if they are not, equally fine

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 08/06/2024 15:23

It appears we have at least two SS tag teams.

CoffeeCantata · 08/06/2024 15:24

Come on, SS - what is it that's eating you all up over the last day or two? I've never seen such crazed frothing as you've been doing recently. Put us out of our misery!

Is it the superb way the D-Day Commemoration went, or is it Harry being left out of the Duke of Westminster's wedding?

Which one? Or both? Or something we've all missed?

Yes she does try hard.
That's what I like. No moaning on TV/newspapers/Netflix whatever.
Just tries hard as you say. Gets on with it. Appropriate dress, appropriate behaviour.
It can be done.

BlueParrotRedParrot · 08/06/2024 15:24

Off the top of my head, I can think of Catherine hugging her midwife, affectionately greeting her friend who had completed a polar expedition, and very sweetly engaging with a little pre school boy, who wanted her poppy, which she inserted onto his coat - yes, she used her dainty hands to voluntarily touch them all. All people of colour. All delighted to see her.

ShiteSalliesForth · 08/06/2024 15:25

No one tries harder than M.

Squeezing out tears. Googling. Securing a high profile husband. Sucking a burger.

And making jam.

Sterling work.

Well that was fun until I was busted but I have a £3 off £20 Tesco voucher I must sprnd today so I think I'll buy some gloves and hand cream and bide my leave.

I think it's more likely that the gruesome twosome had TWO major events to upstage somehow and they couldn't come up with anything that would even begin to compete.

Thought so.

I always feel in need of a hot shower when I look on there. Some seriously sick individuals.
