I’ve said before and will say again. Criticism is not hate.

Nor is it vitriol. Accusations like that are thrown around to make people back down and afraid to post opinions that others have deemed unacceptable.

Not going to work.

AutumnCrow · 05/06/2024 14:00

Many posts are barely even criticism. More like critique.

I think you are reading too much in to that. I don’t think the poster was suggesting she was a ballerina in the sense of being Darcy Bussell. They meant like when a little
girl does ballet lessons. You will agree thought that she must have known how to curtsy. I did ballet for about 5 minutes when I was little and I can still remember. Tbf, it isn’t really difficult and it’s something imagine actors can do. In fact, isn’t there film
if Meghan doing a perfect curtsy?

A girl who does ballet lessons is not a ballerina. Incidentally, in ballet terminology it is called a reverence, not a curtsy.

Not the slightest bit interested in Meghan and what she does or doesn't do.

So you commented just to be picky about a technical term and a common lose use of a word. Fantastic 🙄

Thank you . Of course i wasn’t suggesting she was Margot Fonteyn ( I am old!) but a general term for a ballet dancer . Is that better @haddockfortea ?
My 4 year old DGD goes to ballet classes and tells me she is a ballerina …..

No it isn't. The proper term for a professional female ballet dancer is 'artist', 'first artist', 'soloist', 'first soloist' or 'principal' (as per the Royal Ballet categories) - or simply 'ballet dancer'. Only those dancers at senior level would describe themselves as a ballerina. The term is used as a catch-all by the general public, but it is not technically correct.

Perhaps this should really be in Pedants' Corner.😂

I'm the parent of a professionally trained ballet dancer by the way, so do have some familiarity with it all.

Yeah, I think you're right.

We weren't talking about professional female ballet dancers, though. We were talking about girls who take dance classes.

🤦‍♀️

Indeed.

The term is used as a catch-all by the general public, but it is not technically correct.

Usage often makes words correct. That is how language develops. Sometimes it’s annoying because it isn’t technically correct but if it gets used enough then it finds its way in to the dictionary. It’s quite a democratic process. The fact that you recognise it as a “catch-all” means that the usage is well known. Not sure why you got quite so exercised when you were interested in contributing to the general discussion 🤷‍♀️

AliceOlive · 05/06/2024 14:53

I don’t think Meghan would be very happy to hear she’s not a ballerina.

So it’s just an “oh no, someone on the internet is wrong!”

Meant jovially, as I am certainly not one to judge.

Absolutely!

Oh, the tedium of this kind of time-wasting, de-railing accusation. I've got 2 comments to make on this:

  1. If you want utterly unhinged adulation of Meghan and Harry, Celebitchy is your best bet. An echo-chamber of bizarre fan-girling (oh, and vitriol against the RF and the UK in general thrown in for free). Even those who are more inclined to believe H & M's 'truth' might bridle at the anti-British views expressed there.

  2. The use of the the word 'hate' and 'vitriol' reminds me of how irritating it is when people reduce human emotions to the extreme ends of the spectrum. Anything negative or even constructively critical is construed as 'hate'. What a load of rubbish! I see nothing approaching those sentiments on this (or most other threads which refuse to swallow M & H's world view whole. People are moderate, subtle, analytical, articulate and fair-minded.

Also, as pps have said: M & H are desperate to be in the headlines - they're forever coming up with all kinds of stunts: jam, faux-royal visits, creating fantasy dramas about being pursued by paps, using Invictus for their self-promotion, vapid podcasts etc and endless speechifying. Are we really not allowed to comment on these antics? If not, why not?

I agree, but to those who can't bear anything except total adulation of their idols, anything else at all is criiticism / hate / racism / insert word of choice

And yes there's some of it about, but since most doesn't tend to be on here I've never quite seen the point of trying to derail threads with pointless accusations, or in rising to them when they appear

Best ignored surely ...

Wow. Must have taken some dedication to find something to comment on, on a thread you wouldn’t have otherwise commented on. Have you been trawling through every single
thread on Mumsnet just to find a technically incorrect comment on ballet 😂😂😂

No. I did what normal people do and used the advanced search function. I happened to search 'ballet' and this thread came up.

You don’t even need to take ballet to know how to curtsy, anyway. It’s not like we haven’t seen it a zillion times in movies and tv shows.
