“No one asks me if I’m ok” was a moment where I thought Meghan was a little tone deaf. But I really felt for her.

I thought it made sense for them to leave but never imagined it would be so extreme. I’d think many people would love to have a California/London life.

”Everyone can live a life of service” was when it became clear that they are just not respectful people. It’s turned out as expected that no, everyone does not understand the meaning of serving others or have the fortitude for it.

Yes exactly this. When they said that it sounded so petulant and disrespectful. I think that was my first inkling that H&M were fairly self absorbed loose cannons.

AuroraCake · 01/06/2024 11:56

What is so hard to understand. For us common folk, who want to take our husband's name it's the same: Mrs Sam Smith or whatever. However, us normal folk don't always use titles and as such, if wanted, just add a husband's surname to first name.

So no you can't be a Princess or a Duchess with your own name. Exception is Queen.

Diana was largely called Lady Di, at least until her divorce when people did seem to oddly switch to Princess Di. Catherine is still called Kate or Kate Middleton. Meghan is still Meghan Markle. I don't really care about that though as I am ambivalent with using married name.

AliceOlive · 01/06/2024 11:59

Releasing the letter to her father then acting shocked that her father released the letter to her father. It just looked like a trap at that point.

I know her Dad is an ass. I feel for her on that count. But I don’t think she ever had the intention of introducing him to Harry.

Now we learn that Harry disparaged his weight in Spare. People that will disparage a person’s weight because they don’t like the person have those same feelings about anyone that is overweight. Maybe he mocked someone for being overweight in front of Meghan long before that. Maybe it contributed to the shame she felt. It seems like introducing him to the RF would have been just too humiliating for Meghan.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/06/2024 12:12

It was illuminating to see them on Oprah and then look back at all the other interviews they did and realise how manipulative and fake they were

It was indeed @Thedom, but one that isn't often mentioned from the South Africa interview was when Bradby asked in effect if she'd be able to stick it out and received a sort of we'll have to see response

Add the very obvious playing to the camera (a constant theme with Meghan) and that's when, for me, the doubt set in that she ever intended hanging around - a doubt which was crystallised by the lies and manipulation on Oprah

smellasmelle · 01/06/2024 12:14

I think you are correct in your last paragraph.

I don't think it was anything to do with how Mr Markle behaved.

She was ashamed of him for just being him and he didn’t fit with the people she was climbing towards.

They both set him up to fail.

And I daresay her mother would have been dropped at the roadside too. But she handily fitted in with the percentages to be.

Releasing the letter to her father then acting shocked that her father released the letter to her father. It just looked like a trap at that point.

It did sound a bit that way:

Mr Knauf said in his written evidence: "She also asked a specific question regarding addressing Mr Markle as 'daddy' in the letter, saying 'given I've only ever called him daddy it may make sense to open as such (despite him being less than paternal), and in the unfortunate event that it leaked it would pull at the heartstrings'."
Mr Knauf said Meghan had "deliberately ended each page part way through a sentence so that no page could be falsely presented as the end of the letter".

Also agree with:

Now we learn that Harry disparaged his weight in Spare
Maybe it contributed to the shame she felt. It seems like introducing him to the RF would have been just too humiliating for Meghan.

Also, I agree about Harry's fatshaming of Thomas Markle
I suppose Hollywood is very keen on appearances.

AnnieSF · 01/06/2024 12:16

Indeed looking back at the Oprah interview etc is illuminating now. At the time it was new, it was talked about, it was WTF but with time and later performances by the pair it is just so much more obvious how much play acting was going on. We have had greater opportunity to see Meghan in her various roles.

AliceOlive · 01/06/2024 12:20

Agree. I also think Meghan has Doria under control. She knows how to behave and be quiet. She can pull herself together and look presentable. But Thomas Markle clearly never knows when to stop talking. He’s the “dress ‘em up and feed ‘em but don’t take ‘em out” type.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/06/2024 12:23

Neither do I, @AliceOlive - too much risk of him revealing realities which didn't match her narrative perhaps?

As for Harry's remarks about his FIL's belly, coming from someone who treated the diabled matron in the way he did would you really expect anything else?

AliceOlive · 01/06/2024 12:27

@Puzzledandpissedoff I am not surprised Harry thinks it, but was surprised he was ignorant enough to put it in writing.

DelectableMe · 01/06/2024 12:29

Not quite the right optics, having Thomas Markle walk her down the aisle.

I’m not!

MrsFinkelstein · 01/06/2024 12:33

For me it was sometime between the SA Tom Bradby interview and OW.

I thought the "No one has asked if I'm ok" was tone deaf, but felt sorry for her as she was clearly struggling with some degree of PND and with the culture clash of an SoCal American vs the more reserved British culture. We may speak the same language but we are very very different.

I supported them leaving and thought they were doing the right thing, neither were suited to the roles, and with Charles apparently planning a more slimmed down Monarchy, then why do it if you don't want to? Did think they seemed a bit tightly wound and defensive, but overall still supported them. A fair few times I did think "just keep your head down, don't look at the tabloid pish, why let that rile you"? But that's easy for me to say.

The statement about "Service is universal" and "no one owns Royal" was the point I felt they'd gone way too far. It was juvenile, petty and frankly rude.

The OW interview was so full of inaccuracies and verging on slander it felt almost offensive. And so self-indulgent.

Lack of judgement again ... what else is new Hmm

And while his appearance may be a bit unfortunate I'm not sure that, scrubbed up, he'd have looked any worse than Diana's father, who after his illness looked as if she was supporting him rather than the other way round

LaMarschallin · 01/06/2024 12:37

Poor old Harry appears to have a thing about physical appearance and doesn't seem to rate his own looks:

Prince Harry claims the Royal Family "didn't think a ginger could land such a beautiful woman" during revelations in new Netflix documentary, Harry and Meghan.

Although I also love this bit:

"I remember my family first meeting her and being incredibly impressed", he says. "Some of them didn't quite know what to do with themselves".

The Royal Family didn't know what to do with themselves in the fabulous presence of Meghan?
They meet actresses every other day.

Not quite the right optics, having Thomas Markle walk her down the aisle.

Which is sad, really. He was 73, no one was expecting an Adonis, and a well cut, high quality tailored suit can hide a multitude of sins.

Diana's father was overweight, balding and recovering from a stroke at her wedding. She still looked so proud to have him walk her down the aisle (despite all the issues she'd had with him growing up).
As the Palace were trying to tell her at the time - it's far easier to control someone and the narrative when they're right next to you rather than from 5000+ miles away.

AnnieSF · 01/06/2024 12:38

He was dazzled because he had just had the .................................. of his life 😂

AnnieSF · 01/06/2024 12:38

Harry that is.

DelectableMe · 01/06/2024 12:39

This was a family that had met every crowned head, world leader and person of achievement over many decades.
I hardly think they would be "impressed" by Meghan Markle.

There is that.
Maybe Koo Stark and her career came back to mind...

It was the "ginger couldn't land such a gorgeous actress" that was a real wtf moment for me!

So offensive to his ex-girlfriends. All of whom were very pretty. Some, like Cressida Bonas are genuinely drop dead gorgeous models.

Meghan is beautiful, but no more so than many of his other girlfriends.

Someone just taught me the phrase “cognitive dissonance” earlier today. Because I’m 50+ years old and never heard it before, so huge gratitude for that.

I’m no expert, but seems like Harry exhibited it perfectly with these two statements.
