Did the artist look at the King's portrait and say "hold my beer"

Tatler has a new portrait, allegedly of the Princess of Wales, on its cover. I know it's been a while but I'm pretty sure most of us remember what she looks like.

Link to BBC article laced with sarcasm.

No shade to the artist but Kate's face on the portrait looks horrible. It doesn't look like her at all.

Interesting how the same people calling Kate flat and boring are the same ones who have spent years criticising her, her marriage, her kids and now even bullying her during while she's going through cancer treatment. If she's boring and uninteresting, shush and leave her alone

Hell, we don’t at the moment know whether she is conscious or in a coma and the public don’t seem to care.

Nice of you to try to bring back weird conspiracy theories.

Clearly, some people are desperate for this woman to be either dead or out of the RF completely. We're not going to bully a woman going through cancer treatment just because some nuts on social media either hate her, are desperate for gossip or want something to be wrong with her just so they can point the finger at the RF.

I like Kate. She can take the rest of the year off for all I care if she needs it

queenofarles · 25/05/2024 18:24

I don’t think of this as bullying , it’s beyond that. it’s this deep level of hatred for someone going through a crisis on so many levels, and they are loving it.
There are people gleefully wanting her to be dead or at least in a coma , some sort of vendetta for a couple living thousands of miles away . And that’s not the most unhinged part , it’s because they hate her husband .

Josette77 · 25/05/2024 20:49

The public care enough to let a mother of three young children recover from cancer in peace.

I think it shows how much respect people have for Catherine.

When she announced her treatment people all over the world responded to her. Politicians, Hollywood, this woman has earned a great deal of respect and it's really beautiful to see.

The painter is going further than the face though - it's the dressed body as well. The left hand side (as we viewers look at it - so Catherine's right hand side) has been painted as though there is more unfilled space in the dress and so it hangs differently on this side than the other, more filled out, side.

I think a pp mentioned something similar about the neckline.

Oh and Catherine's right ear (i.e. the one to our left) is distorted, faded and just plain peculiar.

A snapshot of opinions before Meghan came on the scene and the UK went wild for both Meghan and Harry. Until of course their favourite Royals were dumped upon and the ‘rise’ of Kate began in the tabloids.

Makes the UK people look somewhat easily manipulated. No?

I'm sorry @TheFirmBiscuit but I disagree entirely.

MrsFinkelstein · 25/05/2024 13:34

Thanks for showing that Catherine has been bullied, criticised and harassed online and in the media for decades, and that Meghan only faced the exact same as all other women who marry into the RF face.

‘Only’ facing the same flat out misogyny would still be entirely unacceptable and minimising it is appalling.

But no, she didn’t receive the ‘exact same’ treatment. Nobody could possibly think that. There was clear, overt racism added. It’s astonishing to me you can’t see that.

Harry in that Times pic! He looks like her hairdresser. How on earth did he agree to that?

Harry in that Times pic! He looks like her hairdresser.

Now you've mentioned it, I can't un-see it.
He's saying, "What do you think, love? Do you see how I've zhuzhed up the volume?".
And, just behind her back, he's holding that wretched round mirror they always have and he's going to waft it around: "How about the back? Enough off, hmm...?"

smilesy · 26/05/2024 09:47

Ooh. One “airbrushed” photo amongst the hundreds of photos taken of the Princess of Wales by the press 🙄

BemusedAmerican · 25/05/2024 15:38

I initially didn't recognize Kate when I saw the portrait. I was somewhat stunned when I found out the identity of the subject. I do like the Charles portrait. I find the Tatler portrait to be a lot more amateurist but I'm not an art critic.

I can understand why you didn't recognize Kate. I look at it and think, "Oh, ok, it's Kate, but not really much like her." On the other hand, when I look at the Pink and Beige King picture I can most definitely see that it's Charles.

MrsFinkelstein · 26/05/2024 13:05

The Daily Beast "exclusive" that has Bouzy and the rest of the SS ramping up all the rumours and nasty stories about W&C is based on nothing but gossip between journalists.

Their "source" has already come out and said publicly she was totally misquoted.

Oh no, trust me, they absolutely hate her too. In their eyes, she and William are responsible for everything wrong that's happen in Harry's life hence why Kate needs to suffer and be humiliated for the rest of her life

The public care enough to let a mother of three young children recover from cancer in peace.

Exactly and she probably just wants to be left alone right now.

About the portrait, the face is horrible but I hope the artist doesn't get attacked. Tatler are definitely petty but it's not that serious

Oh wow! I just took a look 😳

Those people genuinely aren't well. It's horrifying.

There appears to be a two-pronged attack, some are going after the Nigerian First Lady's husband and daughter while others are ramping up their conspiracy theories about Catherine.

Extreme "fans" often go through phases when following the focus of their attention: interest, support, absolute devotion, aggression towards those who are seen as against their focus, disappointment, disillusion when the focus cannot live up to their devotion, attacking the focus.

This is why never complain, never explain works, because it takes away anything that will ramp up attention.

Like the 'idealise, denigrate, discard' cycle of narcisstic disordered personality types?

Do you think some of them are possibly getting paid for it?

I didn't used to, but having seen what happened in the early part of the year here when names I hadn't seen before or since popped up, spread rumours, usually at the same time of day, and then disappeared again, now, yes I do believe that some people on social media in general are paid to spread disinformation. I haven't been on twitter for a while, although I see tweets copied elsewhere, and I can't believe that some of the posters would maintain the level of vitriol and batshit lies without being paid, surely people aren't that delusional?

It's not just about the Royal family though, the problem is far wider, and I think it's something that people need to be aware of in the forthcoming election.

The BBC reported that there was a deliberate campaign linked to Russian disinformation groups behind the 'Where's Kate' rumours circulating before she made her announcement.

She certainly thinks she is, according to her IG feed.

From what I've seen of her, she's more than able to stand up to the Sewer Squad.
