The royal family

Did the artist look at the King's portrait and say "hold my beer"

Tatler has a new portrait, allegedly of the Princess of Wales, on its cover. I know it's been a while but I'm pretty sure most of us remember what she looks like.

Link to BBC article laced with sarcasm.

Terrible. But then I clicked through to the portrait of the King by Jonathan Yeo- I think that looks like an excellent painting.

LuluBlakey1 · 22/05/2024 21:15

I thought the portrait of the King was dreadful- just a gimmick the artist uses regularly, to flood a background with shades of a colour that obscure any detail and actually require no drawing to represent the man or the King (in this instance) other than the not great likeness of the face. We learn nothing about him. The butterfly is a cliche. However, that portrait looks like a Van Dyke in comparison to this drivel. Surely this is a joke?

ZellyFitzgerald · 22/05/2024 21:19

That portrait looks more like Dexter's sister (from the TV show) than Catherine.

How on earth did Tatler agree to that as a front cover- apart from publicity? (Because really, who the hell reads Tatler anymore?)

I loved the portrait of the King but it definitely got people talking and opinions were really divided. This artist decided as a gift to the nation to unite us again!

Looks like Denise the hairdresser from Corrie. The one who had a baby with Ken Barlow in days of yore.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/05/2024 22:34

Obviously you're wrong, OP, she drank the beer first.

Ooh, I'm seeing Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan) now! As in, a kid's painted copy of a screenshot from Tik Tok.

Anyway, I don't think that's quite the look that a portrait of the Princess of Wales should necessarily be aiming for. There's no depth to it.

MrsLeonFarrell · 22/05/2024 19:58

Exactly, unless, and I just thought of this, it's intended as an incisive commentary on social media conspiracy theories!

A protest against AI and deep fakes.
A painting that deliberately doesn't look like the subject.
So clever it's stupid or so stupid it's clever? 😂

VisitationRights · 22/05/2024 23:03

I think the painting is a statement by the artist intended as an insult or indictment of the RF. it is truly horrible.

AnnieSF · 22/05/2024 23:05

Off with her head!😂

likepebblesonabeach · 22/05/2024 23:11

I am in no way an artist so normally wouldn't criticise anyone else's attempt but that is bloody awful.
I loved the one of King Charles

IndependentUndefeated · 22/05/2024 23:30

I'd be embarrassed if I was the artist.

I see Lisa Marie Presley. Is this a secret tribute?

MrsWhattery · 23/05/2024 00:29

Wow it’s so bad. It doesn’t look like her and it just looks so amateurish. It’s like a painting on the wall of an art classroom (though if it was done by a 13-yo or something it would be a good effort).

But what I don’t get is why they’ve done this at all. Tatler isn’t a shoddy half-arsed outfit, it has high production values. How did no one there not think or say “no that’s not working as a cover”? It’s not just the art that’s bad, but the way it’s kind of floating around on the cover and not taking up enough of the space. It just looks awful. How could anyone think “yeah that’ll do!”

maybe it’s just a cynical attempt to get loads of publicity?

BemusedAmerican · 23/05/2024 00:35

Well, it got loads of clicks so Tatler should be happy.

I loved the Jonathan Yeo portrait of Charles. He is a much more talented portraitist than this artist. She's definitely not the next Holbein of the 21st Century.

MrsWhattery · 23/05/2024 00:36

I like the recent Charles one. It’s weird, but well done.

AutumnCrow · 23/05/2024 01:08

The more I look at it ... I'm thinking I see Meghan more than Catherine - not just in the face, but in the body proportions and the posture, and then there's the incongruous slightly off-set neckline.

So it could be a metaphor for the symbiotic metamorphosis of royal brides juxtaposing them on the one hand as as competitors and on the other hand stereotyping them as agency-less spousal objects with similar attributes.

Nah, only joking. It's crap.

Ger1atricMillennial · 23/05/2024 01:42

It's rage bait...

Slightly uncomfortable given the circumstances about why she is absent from the public eye at the moment.

LuckyPeonies · 23/05/2024 01:53

Dreadful, and looks nothing like her. 🫣

At least that looks like Catherine, albeit in an evil twin kind of way.

Well, it makes that awful portrait of Charles look excellent by comparison 😁
