@notimagain you’ve reminded me of the Ab Fab episode where Eddy has no idea where the office is despite working there or which floor it’s on. :)

I think no one can argue M looked pretty good, most of us mortals would look a lot worse if we chucked a few outfits together at last min. Whether always appropriate another thing but did she look poised, stunning & beautiful? I’ll give her that.

CoffeeCantata · 20/05/2024 11:14

To me, the test of M and H's sincerity will be....when, if ever, will they make a return visit to Nigeria?

Much was made of how important M's Nigerian heritage was to her and there was a lot of gushing towards their hosts. So I assume this will not be their only visit??

If they don't return in the next few years, it will look very much as though Nigeria was just a useful platform for self-promotion and virtue-signalling AGAIN!

Thanks, that’s the one though, though for info the full doc as shown on French TV was about 40-45 min long, that looks like the best of the highlights.

I suspect in the rush to organize what clothes to parade around in wear,....

The clothes didn't look as if anyone had spent any time organising them. More like she grabbed whatever came to hand, rolled it up and chucked it in a suitcase.

I could have assembled a more suitable wardrobe for that trip from my local high street chain stores. And we don't even have M&S.

I have to dress conservatively when we travel back to my dh's home country. I actually see it as a fun challenge to find outfits that are suitable but also stylish and weather appropriate. You stick out like a sore thumb if you dress very differently to others around you.
M totally has the contacts to have found a stylist with some idea of the dress code in Nigeria.

User14March · 20/05/2024 11:32

@JSMill you’re right but IMO standing out & dressing to own advantage the goal NB: some Royal events.

I keep reading she looked unkempt, creased & terrible & outfits awfully unflattering. If I stuffed a few dresses in a bag after work then that would be result, model figured, poised M, however :) ?

She had some nice outfits but mostly her clothes were inappropriate and poorly styled.

If we're talking about looks, I'd say she has a fairly average figure, not 'model like' at all. I see better dressed, more stylish women going about their business every day.

DelectableMe · 20/05/2024 11:08

I wonder if the wardrobe was based on the arrangement with the clothing providers?

I think partly that, but there's also the fact that she rarely dresses appropriately. She tends to overdress, like wearing a formal evening gown for a working event during the day. She dresses for the event she wishes she were at, not the event she's actually at.

Where are people getting the idea that she was in a rush and grabbed a few dresses etc ? She had time to plan her outfits , staff to help her and pretty sure plenty of tissue paper , hangers and an iron available !
Meghan does casual really well but more formal is more often a miss than a hit on my opinion . Several outfits were inappropriate eg the backless dress to meet school children.

I’ll fess up that might have set that particular hare running with a comment upthread about due diligence not being done (ref certain individuals they were going to meet) because they were in a rush to organize the trip.

DelectableMe · 20/05/2024 11:50

She's a very rich woman, with plenty of time and plenty of paid help. She has always had a make up artist and hairdresser travel with her. Maybe she has arrangements with clothing companies, I don't know, but I don't think she looked good on the tour. She could have looked amazing! Style is subjective of course, but imo none of the choices seemed right. She went to a lunch in a strapless floor length dress which looked just like her wedding dress when she married Trevor. The peachy pink backless dress did not look good imo.
It's not like she's a busy woman with a career juggling childcare etc. So, it's a strange one really.

User14March · 20/05/2024 12:00

Is she really’ average size’? Looks in mirror & am a similar height….Oh dear.

User14March · 20/05/2024 12:03

NB: I agree re: comment upthread she does casual really well & loved some of ski looks.

BemusedAmerican · 20/05/2024 12:17

She was overshadowed by the Nigerian women, who consistently looked great due to their use of color and fabric. I wish she had worn that lovely autumn - colored dress that they gave her at an event. I thought at the time that the colors would really suit her.

DelectableMe · 20/05/2024 12:19

I agree, she was overshadowed by the Nigerian women. They looked so strong, proud and colourful.

I don’t think she’s average sized, but for someone so slim she still has some significant figure challenges. I think average was more meant as not amazing, would look good in anything sort of figure, because she hasn’t/doesn’t. You would think she’d have enough experience and help now to dress to her strengths but she doesn’t for some reason, the really great looks are the rarities. I think it doesn’t help that she’s grifting for freebies a lot of the time, also has no class and poor taste so seemingly fails to understand that just because it’s designer doesn’t necessarily mean it’s nice, especially if it’s a poor fit and/or unsuitable for the occasion.

IcedPurple · 20/05/2024 12:40

Yes, that's exactly what I meant.

Her body is fine but she's no Naomi Campbell. Which is also fine, as very few women are. She has her flaws like the rest of us, but unlike the rest of us, she has access to significant resources to help her look her best. However, she rarely dresses for her figure, or for the occasion.

CremeFresh · 20/05/2024 12:43

I think she's short waisted and seems to like belted dresses which make her look a bit bunched up iyswim.

I'd agree with this. Her legs looked very thin in the black and white dress with the high split yet she remains straight up and down at the middle with a bit of visible tummy (the ruffled red dress showed that).
Imo, if you're an apple shape, you lose weight from your limbs well before your stomach and if you throw the perimenopause into the mix as well (giving middle-age spread), that won't make the easiest figure to dress.
That doesn't mean she doesn't have a pretty face and a very decent figure though. I wouldn't say "No" to having them!
It just means she's not really a catwalk model. Catalogue, certainly.

Vespanest · 20/05/2024 13:10

It’s finding designers who are willing to dress you for the audience you are meeting rather than the market they want to sell to. If you are meeting dignitaries and portraying yourself as a dignitary then if you as a woman need to pack tit tape it’s probably the wrong dress. On the whole I thought Meghan had some lovely clothes, it’s Harry who i thought looked unkempt.

Thanks but any idea where these titles in English are?

shenandoahvalley · 20/05/2024 13:18

I’m not one to comment on another person’s body, but - and I appreciate this is going to sound extremely snooty - Meghan dresses like a woman who’s recently come into a lot of money, moves in circles where women have had years and generations of lots of money and have dressed accordingly, but doesn’t haven’t anyone to take her under their wing. Being able to access (I suspect she rents, eBay’s, buys from the realreal etc as well as buys new) expensive clothes isn’t the same thing as looking good. The clothes do not make the woman. There’s dissonance between the heavy, heavy make up, the casual/chic/quiet luxury look she aspires to, the always unkempt hair, the ramrod straight back when she knows there’s a camera in her, and the excess and easily identifiable (including via her merching website) labels she wears. She overthinks her look and it shows. She’s not comfortable in her skin. It’s like she’s cosplaying an idea she has of a modern duchess (and evidently that status matters to her greatly), but it’s completely incoherent. This was all her Nigeria looks. Not one was properly put together.

She’s always looked her best, to me, in her J Crew style outfits: ripped jeans, flats, boyfriend shirt; or dressed for soho house evenings. That’s where she looks comfortable, where things fit properly and her innate prettiness isn’t muffled and drowned out by her trying to be something else. It’s who and what she is, and it shows in her appearance.

notimagain · 20/05/2024 13:21

@Vespanest

…it’s Harry who i thought looked unkempt.

Yep, there quite a few around who hold that opinion.

There are times when sports jacket, chinos and (what looked like) desert boots are appropriate…and times when they are not.

On a fair few occasions on that tour the chauffeurs and other attending locals looked to have made more of an effort to be smart than he had….

MaturingCheeseball · 20/05/2024 13:24

Apple shapes look great in J Crew and the general preppy look. Pears, however, look awful. If I do oversized shirt and chinos I resemble Sandi Toksvig in a long wig.

I did like Meghan’s dresses in Nigeria, but they looked a bit day-at-races, cruise evening. I suppose she did want to stand out, and therefore did not want to blend in with the colourful outfits of the Nigerian women she was photographed with.

Thedom · 20/05/2024 13:25

Some of Meghan's dresses were really nice, but more suitable for lunch or dinner at Nobu Malibu .
