Part 5 of (mostly ๐Ÿ˜‚) drama-free and positive threads, delving into all things Meghan and Harry. Whether itโ€™s the causes they support, their business initiatives, or Meghanโ€™s fashion choices (Harryโ€™s too, on occasion ๐Ÿ˜‰), thereโ€™s plenty to discuss. Just a pro-tip - that there may be use of MLE terms and discussions of dupes - you might want to exit stage left if these things offend. Hat tip to @queentim for the original inspiration.

There is something to be said for making some positive contributions to conversations, rather than just bickering, no?...

Iโ€™ve known people IRL that like to say something shitty, then say something neutral or positive to ostensibly offset it. Used to feel gaslit, but Iโ€™m over it now.

DiTePerdantTeMaledico · 14/05/2024 13:58

No?

No.

Not if those making positive contributions also make snide comments to others.

It is like Harry making racist comments. He may well have positive contributions to make. It doesnโ€™t make the racist comments go away.

As for hidden meanings in frocks and jewellery? That is likely folk seeing what they want to see.

If Iโ€™m mistaken, and they were picked to antagonise? Then that to me is desperately sad. And spiteful.

And anyone doing something like that is worthy of contempt.

This one, for example, has me slightly puzzled. I'm not sure there is that much hidden meaning to be uncovered in outfits.

Typically for tropical countries you have to balance the heat and humidity with fending off mozzies and if you're somewhat like Meghan, decorum, branding, and anticipating the reactions of a hostile media and millions of people watching your every move....

Rather a lot of variables to solve for!...

I don't know much about Nigerian climate, so I looked up average temperatures at this time of year for Abuja and Lagos. Apparently 22C and 26C respectively, which seems very hot for a person who lives in Scotland (me!) but maybe not so much for someone who lives in California?

I do enjoy how articles like this point out little details about outfit choices. There is an art to diplomatic dressing.

So the trick is to ignore the crowd of people on the other side of the fence waiting to greet you. Itโ€™s better optics.

I saw that footage. A very excited fan behind that fence hoping for some acknowledgment from Harry and Meghan. No such luck for her. Say what you like about the optics of the hundreds of fans wanting to greet Catherine and William in Jamaica, who were in the stands of a football stadium behind fixed fencing that is there for the safety of fans and players. They actually did bother to greet those fans and talk and shake hands for them. I am glad they didnโ€™t ignore them, goes to show what decent people they are.

AliceOlive · 14/05/2024 14:06

The climate in southern California is not really hot though. Low humidity makes it almost chilly at night compared to other parts of US. So I think yes, they will have been pretty hot there.

I am annoyed by the articles attributing meaning or copying others to the clothing choices. Who has time for that!

The women of Nigeria also have to deal with heat, humidity and mosquitoes. How is it that they can cope with this whilst not going backless, sleeveless and topless above the bust-line? In fact, how does showing so much flesh help with mosquitoes?

Thanks. I also don't know much about the climate of California! Grin

Scotland has been warm this last week.

It was 27 here on Saturday.

Apparently there are now mosquitos here as well as the dreaded midgies.

I daresay only a fool would have a heap of skin showing when they are about.

jeffgoldblum · 14/05/2024 14:18

Was that hot in the south west of England where I was too!!

AliceOlive · 14/05/2024 14:18

I am sympathetic with Meghan Re: clothing choices. Itโ€™s very difficult for me to move between where I live, where I grew up and anywhere else and make good choices about clothing.

One humid climate but also a place where women dress very well. Another a bit cooler and the style is almost nonexistent, so Iโ€™d be cold and over-dressed if I wore the same styles at home as I do where I grew up.

I think Meghan chose clothing for the climate that didnโ€™t address how conservative Nigerian women dress. But I guess she was comfortable enough as she didnโ€™t change course at any point.

AliceOlive · 14/05/2024 14:20

I also wondered if the peach dress photographs a lighter color than it looks in person.

I'm East Coast. I think we got to about 22C where I live, which is still too hot as far as I'm concerned. I didn't move to Scotland to be hot! It's a lot cooler today (14), but still warm enough for short sleeves. Wink

Totally agree.
Raheem Sterling also went across to greet them. I just donโ€™t know what they were supposed to do in the situation. (Ignore them obviouslyโ€ฆ..)
I really donโ€™t get how people want to rehash events and bring them up on threads and then talk about division and negativity.

On a different note, just seen this side by side photo. Meghan obviously takes some style inspiration from Diana.

I would have called that coincidence but the shoesโ€ฆ

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2024 14:35

Maybe Meghan just has similar taste to Diana and that's what drew Harry to her. They do say people are attracted to things that are familiar to them.

BemusedAmerican · 14/05/2024 14:37

Translated Celsius into Fahrenheit.

It has been humid and in the 70's off and on over the past week. NYC is very humid and in the 80's and 90's in the summer. I wear linen since it is cooler than cotton. Many women wear loose dresses. People either cover shoulders or wear sunscreen to prevent skin cancer. My DF died from melanoma and a good friend has it so I am careful. I also wear sunhats. I kept hoping they wore a good sunscreen, especially Harry.

Yes, of course he did, because heโ€™s a really decent bloke. And substance matters to some people more than optics, whereas for self promotors making an event all about themselves, optics is everything. I think itโ€™s well known now from which quarters the Cambridge visit was portrayed with such vicious negativity; and itโ€™s clear those same quarters are happy to look the other way for this Nigerian visit, with events that could equally be negatively spun. In fact they positively welcome the optics, which does make me laugh.

Diana wasnโ€™t noticeably into โ€œCalifornia Coolโ€ style, which has always been Meghanโ€™s much vaunted aesthetic though!

How did Harry manage to cope with the climate in Nigeria whilst wearing suits, long sleeve shirts and ties. Maybe he needs to give Meghan some tips.

I think it's chilling how the Caribbean tour was spun by anti-monarchists. I think, since then, it's been revealed that to a large extent it was the work of the Sussex Squad, but their campaign was scarily effective. People can be easily deceived and photographs can be made to show quite another situation to that which was the case. W & C's crime, it seems, was to engage with the children reaching through the fence. They didn't bring the fence with them to separate them from the 'natives'! As you say, H & M ignored the fans in a similar situation. I know who I think behaved well!

As someone on MN pointed out, H & M did a tour when they were still in the RF in which they appeared in much more blatantly 'colonialist' situations, but didn't attract any criticism. And on the Nigeria jaunt, as we know, H & M laid themselves open to criticism for White Saviourism and other very dubious posings - Harry's throne, for example. But that's OK with their fans because it's H & M.

So depressingly factional and malicious, and depressing in the way it manipulates events so cynically.

Doesn't she just?

DiTePerdantTeMaledico · 14/05/2024 15:19

For me, she always looks her absolute best in casual wear.

Not many look as good in a white shirt as she does.

She would look super in a โ€˜made for herโ€™ maxi dress. Smocking or gathering near the bust to give her the appearance of a waist etc.

As good as she looks in a white shirt, she should wear vibrant colours more.

The neutral beiges and the like just donโ€™t do anything for her.

Does she look good? Arguably yes.

Does she look better in beautiful colours? I do think so.

It's indeed fairly clear that some people have become reeeeeelllyy rather upset that Harry and Meghan's Invictus visit to Nigeria, in response to an invitation from the Nigerian MoD, has been such a huge, unmitigated success.

I just don't think you can say that - or at least, not yet.

I'm not upset but I am more cynical about this strange, hybrid celebrity/royal cosplay escapade than some.

I'm still not clear quite what is was about and what was achieved, I'm not convinced that we know yet what (if anything) it means for most Nigerians - rather than the elite. It seemed like a celebrity appearance, or a succession of them. Fine in itself, but I'm sure H & M would claim it's more than that, so we shall see if any material benefit results from it.

I've heard and seen negative things which I'm not going to repeat here, but I think you're swallowing it whole and undigested. Let's see what transpires when the dust settles.

Can't agree more with everything you say here. I think you are referring to their time in Fiji.
