Can this be true? That Harry and Meghan are off on a “royal” trip to Nigeria? What’s the game now? My head is spinning!

@NoisySnail I don't think Harry should be allowed anywhere near the RF. I think he should stay out of politics, and possibly spend more time with his children. When is he actually home to see them? My father worked a lot but still had dinner with his children every night.

TBF my DF was away a lot (merchant navy) but he spent all his time with us when he was home (apart from when the cricket was on, but y'know, priorities).

They don't. They may want to become a republic, but it's highly unlikely they would choose to leave the Commonwealth.

And if they do, that's entirely up to them. Nobody's stopping them.

In that case, I think it was even ruder and inappropriate of the Jamaican PM to be so rude to W & K.

He knew very well that that topic was for another time and place - and not for a public speech at a royal tour dinner! I wasn't impressed.

Xenia · 02/05/2024 13:51

They will be perfectly safe in Nigeria. I have been on business - yes a separate car with a gun met me at the airport to escort me to the compound in Lagos but as long as you have measures in place it will be fine. I doubt they will be going to an area where Boko Haram are on the prowl.

I am laughing at the worry Harry will say something stupid after the embarrassing William and Catherine Colonial tour.

You're easily amused.

NoisySnail · 02/05/2024 12:44

I know you are all getting excited at the idea that Harry will say something stupid. Just as you were all hoping he would leave his wife and children and go back to the Royal Family.
This is why social media is so toxic. People hoping bad things will happen to strangers.

Don't be so obtuse - nobody is "getting excited" - more dreading it, on past history.

And if you are so concerned about the toxicity of social media, maybe it's not the place for you.

Like people insisting that William has beaten Catherine to death?🙄

I'm always amazed at how many posters are apparently guffawing away while reading a message board.
I'm sometimes moved to smile and even, occasionally, "lol" - although that's more of an amused "Huh!" than the full-blown, rolling on the floor, teary eyes (and wet legs?) effect usually implied.

MummyJ12 · 02/05/2024 14:03

You’ll probably be soon asked to provide a least one direct link soon on that too @smilesy

MummyJ12 · 02/05/2024 14:04

Ooh two soons! Embarrassing! 🫢

Someone wasn't on this board or X earlier this year, it seems, when all manner of bad things were being wished on strangers by the fanclub of a certain couple. To call it toxic is an understatement.

Yes, the glee was absolutely vicious - people salivating at the juicy gossip about William's so-called affair - I remember actually feeling disgusted about it at the time because I would have thought that the MN demographic at the very least had goodwill to families with small children in common, if nothing else.

Some posters were repeating the old rubbish started by Giles Coren and others clearly lapping it up greedily for the first time. Really stomach-churning. And kinder posters imploring them to desist had absolutely no effect.

Now, I'm no fan of H & M, but I would be genuinely upset if their marriage broke up for the sake of their children - whom I feel concerned about in many ways. I can't imagine being gleeful about it even though I find the pair of them a massive pain in the posterior.

Yes, SM can be very toxic. Look at the “where’s Kate?” jibes and comments about photoshop fails before Catherine announced that she had cancer.

MummyJ12 · 02/05/2024 14:24

Absolutely @CoffeeCantata I completely agree. Even though Giles Coren has categorically stated that he was joking, they still won’t let it go.
Although it’s funny that there’s been no mention of his tongue in cheek one involving M&H when he was becoming exasperated himself with the hate and rumours peddled by the SS and repeated on here. (And left to stand!)

Someone actually started a thread on this and @mnhq allowed it despite many complaints. They breezily dismissed my own complaint. I thought then and now that this was disgusting of Mumsnet to allow such a mean spirited nasty gossipy thread about a married couple with young children. Two married couples and children actually as it obviously involved another party.

In the light of subsequent events it would be nice if @MNHQ would delete the thread if it is still standing.

CoffeeCantata · 02/05/2024 13:20

I am laughing at the worry Harry will say something stupid after the embarrassing William and Catherine Colonial tour.

I felt really sorry for them - the perceived issued weren't their fault. The Foreign Office seemingly sent them into a very difficult situation, and they did their best.

I get that Jamaica want to leave the CW - fine - but it was hostile and rude and inappropriate for the PM to say it so baldly in the context he did. It's surely something for diplomats/politicians to chew over. W & K can't respond and certainly can't enter into any diplomatic arguments.

And as for the wire fence business - how on earth was that W and K's fault? The wire fence wasn't their doing, and if little children push their hands through, are they supposed to snub them? I smell malice - trying to show them in a bad light.

Basically, if Jamaica didn't want them, it should have said so. Did it? I genuinely don't know, but it's an important point. Like inviting people to your home to be rude to them.

And if they didn't admit to being hostile to the tour in advance, then they should have shown a bit more grace.

It was the fault of the Royal Family and their aides. None of them recognise how things will look to the public.
The footballer present moved along the wire fence and spoke to children at a point where there was a large hole in the fence so it was only waist height. He recognised how photos would look and took aversive action.
William and Catherine on the jeep recreating the Queen and Philips visit was a full on colonial look and should never have happened.
The firing on camera should have been foreseen. The Royal Family treat these countries as photo opportunities and largely ignore what the inhabitants of the countries think. There were large local demonstrations against them, the Royal Family just pretended they did not exist.
They asked to meet with Bob Marleys family and they refused so they posed next to a cut out of Bob Marley instead.
It was totally foreseeable.

NoisySnail · 02/05/2024 14:53

And Jamaica did say they did not want William and Catherine to visit. They came anyway.

NoisySnail · 02/05/2024 14:55

And this board has been full of people, some on this thread, who have openly said they think Harry should leave Meghan and his children and return to the Royal Family.

IcedPurple · 02/05/2024 14:56

NoisySnail · 02/05/2024 14:53

What?

A royal tour has to be coordinated with the host government at the highest level.

Are you saying Kate and William just barged into the country without the permission of the government?

IcedPurple · 02/05/2024 14:57

Someone wasn't on this board or X earlier this year, it seems

Oh, I think they were.

And well before it.

😆 @smilesy 😆

IcedPurple · 02/05/2024 15:02

NoisySnail · 02/05/2024 15:00

Yes I am saying that.
There were protests long before William and Catherine were in Jamaica.
If the Royal Family wanted to avoid being fired on screen they should have listened. It was arrogant to continue with their visit.

https://globalnews.ca/news/8700947/royal-tour-jamaica-republic-queen-elizabeth/

There are often protests accompanying royal visits. That's not the same thing as saying the government did not want them there. It would be impossible to conduct a royal visit without the active cooperation of the host government.

And how has the headline of your linked article turned out?
