I’m not referencing the DM as ‘prestige’ but in reference to coverage and outreach. It isn’t FT readers that would be buying the jam now would it?

Towie members at best get the top placed at side bar, not the top news story

Who is going to be 'buying the jam', in your opinion?

Who are the people who are going to go to the trouble of ordering something online that they could get in their nearest supermarket for a lot less money?

BoohooWoohoo · 20/04/2024 11:11

*Her best hope is the tv show but not filming in her own place is a bad sign. It will feel inauthentic.

She should have housed a tv kitchen in the little
cottage has at the end of her garden. That way it’s at her home but it would have been private from the rest*

I would have watched just for a peek at her kitchen and she could have sold me some kitchen gadgets while she was at it. I’m sure I’m not the only who has bought something after watching a celebrity chef use it on a programme.

BoohooWoohoo · 20/04/2024 11:13

I read that the strawberries were grown on her land and made by a third party.
Have 50 friends/influencers posted about their gift ? I’ve only heard about 3 or 4 posts and 2 are a married couple so probably received a basket between them.

Sussex Squad seem to have some wealthy members who give generously to charity fundraisers.

I had a look on Erewhon (which I’ve seen on SM as a very exclusive place to buy groceries) and their priciest strawberry jam is $19.99.

The 'squad' couldn't even keep her free podcast going.

They make a lot of noise on the internet, but there aren't enough of them to sustain a business long term. And she's going to have to sell an awful lot of jam to fund a Montecito lifestyle.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 20/04/2024 11:28

I thought that this was Meghan’s USP

I didn't say she was a feminist. I said she wanted it to be part of her USP - and I think she definitely does consider herself to be a feminist.

She wanted to rise far above the dull and limiting British Royal family. To be a global superstar. And now she's not selling jam, and filming a cooking show.

Sorry , i wasn’t suggesting you thought she was a feminist it was more me questioning how she can see herself as one .

Vespanest · 20/04/2024 11:37

Katie price makes headlines all the time, she still bankrupt. Gawping and liking are two very different things. I don’t even mind Meghan but that’s different to me spending my cash. I have a sneaky suspicion that her followers are not going to be her desired market anyway.

AliceOlive · 20/04/2024 11:46

I don’t expect anyone to film a multi-episode cooking show in their own house. The Netflix “reality” show telling the world about their “authentic” lives and bathroom habits should have been filmed at home.

Martha Stewart did.

Lots of people do though, like Prue Leith. It does add more authenticity and charm. You feel invited into their home. Somewhere else, and she's just a presenter.

And Mary Berry.

Also Rachel Khoo.

Martha Stewart did.

She didn’t have young children when she started the show though, right? She started filming in 1993 and her daughter would have been 18 that year.

Martha started a catering business almost 20 years prior to that first show. She had been planning parties from a young age.

So she built from the ground up and was already successful in the space well prior to the show.

I do get it, but Meghan is never going to be one of those people. We know this. She’s trying to jump right to the end rather than spending years laying the groundwork.

And that’s a good sign this is not really a passion for her, but a means to an end. She seems to want the fame and riches that come along with decades of dedication, without putting in the decades.

EmpressOfTheThread · 20/04/2024 12:31

You're absolutely spot on, @AliceOlive
All those people named have achieved that through hard work and ability. They have all worked hard for their success, and are popular. That's the difference with them and Meghan. She hasn't, and she isn't.

Solgrass · 20/04/2024 12:31

@IcedPurple

The same people who signed up to her website or followed her on the Tig. Even if she gets a fraction of those buying the products, it will be a hit.

The problem is most people will buy for the novelty factor and unless this is better than their reg jam, they are unlikely to buy it again ( will prob be very expensive too so an unlikely cupboard staple)

So I envisage high sales (because of low batch numbers) and sell outs in the beginning but long term unlikely to be a major success. To be successful long term in the luxury food business, you really have to be the best of the best. This just feels like another grift and then on to the next one, rinse repeat

elessar · 20/04/2024 12:34

Solgrass · 20/04/2024 10:48

I think like Harry’s book, everyone wanted a slice. But then when the hype was over…that’s it. No more sales.

I think when it first launches they will deliberately have small batches so it sells out. But I also think long term the hype will wane and there will be too much scrutiny on the products. People will leave bad reviews, newspapers will talk to ‘sad face’ consumers about a late delivery. No company can deal with the amount of bad PR it will get.

Her best hope is the tv show but not filming in her own place is a bad sign. It will feel inauthentic.

I agree, it will launch with very small volumes that will sell out straightaway so they can claim the PR win of super high demand, immediate sell out etc. same thing a lot of influencers do.

Plus they won't want to invest in huge stock quantities up front without knowing how demand will be.

I absolutely think on the surface of it they'll be able to spin it as a success, but does it have scale and longevity? I have my doubts.

Honestly I think their biggest issue will be that neither of them have great business sense, but nor have they shown they're willing to listen to advice. I'd imagine this "launch" is exactly a result of that.

Thinking about it, didn't Meghan invest in some coffee brand and send a basket of it to Oprah? If so, the jam to celebrity friends is following the same playbook. Wonder how that coffee brand is doing now.

Solgrass · 20/04/2024 12:41

@elessar

Ive seen they sell the coffee Clevr on Amazon….doesnt shift in huge numbers on there. The biggest selling item shifted 300+ products this month

AliceOlive · 20/04/2024 12:46

I see supporters online talking about her as if she’s a seasoned business woman. What business has she run? Getting copyrights a few days before launching an instagram page doesn’t give the appearance of someone that’s spent any time making a plan.

A friend of mine opened a small lunch cafe and spent a year, full time, getting everything in place before opening.

AliceOlive · 20/04/2024 12:47

The coffee brand was just someone seeing a good idea and wanting a piece of it. I doubt she’s had an involvement other than a small financial contribution and giving some free publicity.

If she gets a fraction of those numbers buying from her it will be a disaster.

And I note that Oprah has not posted about the Meghan jam... For sure she'll have been sent one. And she did post about the Clevr coffee. How things change in a few short years!
