What next? What did the launch aim to achieve? Did it get the desired result?

No, that seems to have gone.

IcedPurple · 12/04/2024 19:34

She never really had a 'UN role.'

She was briefly an 'advocate' for UN Women, but that really doesn't come to much.

Allegedly, the reason she walked out on the event at the market in Fiji on the Australian tour is because UN Women were present at the event. Apparently, she held a grudge because they refused to make her a UN Ambassador, like Emma Watson.

Allegedly.

IsoldeWagner · 12/04/2024 19:36

Very, very interesting, @IcedPurple .

Abouttimeforanamechange · 12/04/2024 19:40

Who knows if he actually enjoys it, [playing polo, ]he may just have been forced to do it.

Oh no - if that was the case, we'd have heard all about it in Spare.

It's quite physically demanding, with a real risk of injury. I don't think anyone could reach a moderate level of competence if they weren't committed. And he could have given it up long ago if he didn't enjoy it. Does William still play?

Polo is really good fun, if you like that sort of thing. King Charles, William, and Harry all play/played. Nobody forced him.

Tatler says it’s because Meghan is an animal activist. It says she has rescue dogs so… activist. But forcing your husband to sell off collectible, appreciable one-of-a-kind assets is not a great look, IMO.

We have a good laugh in my house about people saying a they “rescued” a pet. “Oh, did you jump in a river and save it? No? Then that animal rescued you, not the other way around.”

Rescue dogs... so activist...

Environmentalist... massive house, private planes...

Only having 2 children to save the planet... massive consumerists...

Hypocrisy much?!

Sussurations · 12/04/2024 22:58

Meghan on the Real Housewives - she must be on Andy Cohen’s vision board. I would watch it!

Hmm.. I hadn’t heard that and it certainly gives a new angle on what happened there.

If the polo thing has already been shot, then I don’t think Harry will appear in it much other than through archive footage. “Long the bastion of royalty and the elite <cut to shot of Charles as a young man playing polo, couple of Saudi princes, and neat segue to Harry on a horse in his 20s>, this glamorous and exclusive sport is actually a clash of highly trained athletes and their beloved partners, the ponies”. As a discipline and a scene, it does have it all: it is rigorous, it is exclusive, man and beast, glamour, glossy women being feminine. Trouble is, Harry only accessed the world because of who he is (he’s not known as one of the better player - none of the royals are, unlike Zara and her mum with show jumping for example). Who knows if he actually enjoys it, he may just have been forced to do it. Still, he has decades of experience, and he can actually do it. Meghan has been there for two minutes because she married a player, dipped her toe in, saw the social exclusivity and $$$$ expenses of the sport and thought “well, I’m a duchess married to a prince, this is rightfully my world too now and I’m entitled to use it as my own [to fulfil my contractual obligations]”. Never mind that she famously banned him from hunting and made him sell off his Purdey guns gifted to him by his grandfather.

There’s no getting away from the fact that neither of them put in the hard graft to credibly lecture others about, well, anything. They’re dilittantes at absolutely everything except for (1) being Prince Harry (2) hustling as an actress in LA. That’s literally all they have authority to speak on. It’s all desperate, selling whatever scraps of themselves remain. Fancy making tv shows about your part-time hobby and bring a housewife, and expecting people to think anything than that you’re complete tools.

I didn’t know about the guns. I am anti hunting but even so think she had no right to do that if true. Agree with all you say.

The polo thing and the Meghan-at-home cooking/entertaining thing I bet is going to be pitched as “we’re so royally rich and so royally glamorous, but we’re also humble and definitely not stuck up like the actual royals, so we’re going to lift the lid on a royal world you ordinary folks don’t get to see, to royally shine a light on how we live royally, so you can do the same at home in your non-royal 3-bed semi [see affiliated links for where to buy our royal shit].” And people will watch that shit. It’ll be like animated Hello Magazine, center spread on Meghan Markle, wearing expensive clothes, with glossy dogs and bright sunshine and kids begging for organic snacks and hydrating water after school, Harry juggling away in the background.

The Kardashians, basically. But Royal.

Laughing out loud at this. I can just see it.

Thatsthewayitisnt · 12/04/2024 23:05

Hmm.. I hadn’t heard that and it certainly gives a new angle on what happened there.

It was written about in Courtiers or Revenge (or possibly both). Those poor women in the market who had hoped to show her their textiles were upset that she barely spent any time there after all the preparations they had made. She stayed long enough to take away her free gift, though. I gather the palace blamed it on a "security" concern - that's a recurring theme whenever Markle doesn't want to do something.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/04/2024 07:16

Thank you for another interesting thread. In defence of Meghan (on this one occasion) I remember all of the threads discussing Zika and pregnant women or women looking to get pregnant asking if they should visit a country, where it was active. The firm answer was no. Meghan was in Fiji at around that time. She was given the all clear to go there despite the virus being active. Perhaps she was genuinely overwhelmed by the whole thing? I can imagine the women were very disappointed though. They will have waited hours and hours.

IsoldeWagner · 13/04/2024 07:20

The trip was significant, and planned well in advance with their agreement and consent.
If they were planning a pregnancy, that's fine, but either go and accommodate it or don't go.
Meghan chose the former, I'm guessing with the advice of her (first rate) medical team.

EsmaCannonball · 13/04/2024 07:57

Meghan used rescue dogs to enhance her brand and then ditched one of them to pursue Harry. It's cruel to let dogs become attached to each other and separate them and cruel to cause further upheaval and anxiety in a rescue dog's life. How many of us would be ruthless enough to ditch a rescue dog for a bloke?

Sussurations · 13/04/2024 08:00

Happy to be corrected if I’m wrong but wasn’t that the occasion when her PA was seen in the car in tears? I think it was in Valentine Low’s book (I haven’t read it yet). I do think there was more to it than concerns about Zika or security.

Off the top of my head I can’t remember ever hearing of a member of the RF leaving a planned visit early due to security concerns - presumably if it happens it’s handled very professionally. This wasn’t that I don’t think.

Serenster · 13/04/2024 08:16

It was Daily Mail reporter Rebecca English, who attended the Fiji market trip, who claimed: ‘I was there at the time and witnessed Meghan turn and “hiss” at a member of her entourage, clearly incandescent with rage about something, and demand to leave. I later saw that same – female – highly distressed member of staff sitting in an official car, with tears running down her face.
Our eyes met and she lowered hers, humiliation etched on her features.’

Interestingly though, Rebecca English didn’t write about this issue at the time when she covered the Fiji visit - the story she wrote on the day is linked to below. Despite the Sussexes’ allegations, at the time their press coverage was wholly positive - journalists simply didn’t write about things like this that they were being told or seeing at this time.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spend their first full day in Fiji

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are spending their first full day in Fiji, where they will attend a number of engagements, some of them together as a couple and others solo.

IsoldeWagner · 13/04/2024 08:27

The press coverage of this, and in fact the whole tour, was very positive indeed.

Yes - this is a fascinating incident and you can see it in detail on YouTube (sorry I haven't posted a link - just search for 'Fiji market visit Meghan' or similar).

Her discomfort at encountering the UN women is clear, and really embarrassing because the stallholders were waiting excitedly to meet her and the visit was basically jettisoned (allegedly!) when M suddenly panics and decides she can't face them. You can see a very stressed female protection officer (the tall blonde one) looking near to tears in the market and I bet she was the one who broke down in the car later. M hisses something in her ear at one point and they then have to leave hurriedly. An absolute PR disaster, and very telling.

I just don't know who M thinks she is fooling, but clearly there are some so blind that they will not see!

Isn’t it nice to be able to say the words Daily Mail without being pounced on and sneered at ?
I suspect Rebecca etc could tell a few tales about Harry and Meghan ( and others).
Returning to the Fiji market and Meghan leaving because of alleged security issues , I remember an incident involving Charles who was on a platform making a speech when he was rushed at by a man . Charles security brought the man down and hustled him away while Charles calmly watched .
And let’s not forget Anne’s response to an armed kidnapper !! Oh and the Kate Queen when someone fired shots .

IsoldeWagner · 13/04/2024 08:46

I was just thinking the same about The Daily Mail and the sneering, @Mylovelygreendress !
Also, they do act as if they're the only ones with any security concerns. No, they're the only ones making a fuss and victimhood about it.

I was just reading through and gearing up to posting that when TLQ faced an actual security crisis she calmed her horse and carried on. Because she was a professional.

IsoldeWagner · 13/04/2024 09:06

Also, @PinkTonic , she understood that a life of public service came with its own risks.

PinkTonic · 13/04/2024 09:50

@IsoldeWagner yes indeed. Also clear from Princess Anne when she chatted with Parky about the kidnap attempt on her.

JADS · 13/04/2024 10:11

At the time, I could understand the concerns around Zika, but it seemed worse PR to start a visit and then cut it short than cancel completely. The whole thing was a bit fool hardy. The visit was only 15 minutes long so bailing out half way through on a group of women (WOC as welll) sounds a bit churlish.

Later to discover that Meghan has a vendetta against the UN because they didn't make her an ambassador makes it even more sad.

Clearly the UN had her number
